T-Mobile’s original older-plan increase was not a universal $5 hike. In May 2024, the carrier confirmed that selected legacy smartphone plans would rise by either $2 or $5 per affected line per month, with the change expected to appear during June 2024 billing cycles. T-Mobile notified affected customers directly, but did not publicly provide a complete plan-by-plan list.
That story is now part of a longer sequence. Some older plans reportedly received another $5-per-line increase beginning April 2, 2025. In 2026, T-Mobile also began retiring certain legacy billing arrangements and moving some customers to newer plans, with reported increases averaging about $4 per line and reaching as much as $6 for some voice or home-internet lines. Those are separate developments, so your notice and bill—not the headline—determine which change applies to you.

What the 2024 T-Mobile increase actually changed
The May 2024 price adjustment applied only to selected older smartphone plans. The reported increase was:
- $2 per affected line per month for some customers; or
- $5 per affected line per month for others.
The change was expected to begin with the customer’s June 2024 billing cycle, although the precise appearance depended on the account’s billing date. T-Mobile said rising costs were a factor and pointed to certain plan prices having remained unchanged for nearly a decade. That is the carrier’s explanation, not a finding that every legacy plan had identical costs or features. See Ars Technica’s report on the 2024 increase.

The charge was assessed per line, so the account-level impact depended on how many lines were affected:
| Affected lines | $2 increase | $5 increase |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | $2 per month | $5 per month |
| 2 | $4 per month | $10 per month |
| 4 | $8 per month | $20 per month |
| 5 | $10 per month | $25 per month |
| 10 | $20 per month | $50 per month |
These are arithmetic examples, not evidence that every line on a particular account was affected.
Why the “up to $5” headline can be misleading in 2026
There have been at least three distinct developments involving older T-Mobile plans:
| Date | Development | Reported impact |
|---|---|---|
| May–June 2024 | T-Mobile confirmed an increase on selected older smartphone plans. | $2 or $5 per affected line. |
| April 2, 2025 | Some older plans reportedly received another adjustment. | Up to $5 per line. |
| June–August 2026 | T-Mobile began retiring certain legacy billing arrangements and migrating customers to newer plans. | About $4 per line on average in reported company comments; as much as $6 for some voice or home-internet lines and $3 for some connected-device lines. |
The 2025 development was reported by Droid-Life. The 2026 migration was reported by MacRumors, Android Authority, and Fierce Network.
Some long-time customers may therefore have experienced more than one change. Establish your bill’s baseline using older statements rather than assuming the newest adjustment is the only increase your account has received.

How to find out whether your account is affected
- Find the notice. Check T-Mobile texts, email, account messages, and paper communications for language such as “plan retirement,” “rate plan update,” or a similar description. Note the effective date, replacement plan, and projected change.
- Compare two or more bills. Review the bill immediately before the change and the first bill afterward. Identify whether the difference appears in the base plan, a line-level recurring charge, a discount, or taxes and fees.
- Count affected lines. Confirm which voice, home-internet, watch, tablet, hotspot, or other connected-device lines changed. Different line types may receive different adjustments.
- Check the plan name in your account. Save a screenshot of the old and new plan descriptions and any comparison page shown in your T-Mobile account.
Do not assume that every line on a multi-line account received the same increase. A free line, connected device, or discounted line may display differently from a standard voice line.
Audit the whole bill—not just the advertised rate
The most important number is your total monthly cost after discounts and credits. Before accepting a replacement plan, record:

- Base plan and per-line charges;
- Taxes and regulatory fees;
- AutoPay savings;
- Free-line credits and multi-line discounts;
- Military, senior, first-responder, employer, or other eligibility-based discounts;
- Premium-data allowance and hotspot data;
- International data and roaming benefits;
- Streaming or other included services;
- Device-installment payments and promotional bill credits; and
- Any price-lock or price-guarantee language.
A plan that looks cheaper on its headline rate can cost more after losing a free-line credit, changing AutoPay treatment, adding taxes and fees, or removing benefits that your household actually uses.
Free lines, discounts, and device credits need special attention
Free lines
Separate the recurring charge from the corresponding credit. Your total bill could rise while the free-line credit remains intact, or a migration could make the credit appear under a different description. Ask T-Mobile to confirm the credit in writing.
AutoPay and eligibility discounts
Plan changes can alter how AutoPay savings or senior, military, first-responder, and employer discounts are applied. Confirm that eligibility remains attached to every qualifying line and that the final discounted total is unchanged except for the announced adjustment.

Device financing
A plan change does not automatically mean that device installments disappear, but a voluntary plan change can affect promotional eligibility. Before agreeing, ask support to list every remaining installment and bill credit and confirm that none will be forfeited.

Watch, tablet, hotspot, and other data-device lines may have different pricing from voice lines. In the 2026 reports, the maximum cited adjustment for connected-device lines was lower than the maximum reported for voice or home-internet lines. Treat the notice for your specific line as controlling.
What T-Mobile says about retiring legacy plans
For the 2026 migration, T-Mobile characterized some older plans as products created during the 3G and 4G eras and said moving customers to newer plans would support a more current 5G and service experience. Reports also described the elimination of more than 1,100 legacy billing codes.
That explanation should not be read as proof that all older plans were unable to use 5G. Network access and features depend on the specific plan, device, and line. Likewise, reports describe automatic migrations for some customers, but the available information does not establish a universal opt-out process.
Some replacement plans reportedly include a five-year guarantee covering eligible monthly talk, text, and 5G-data pricing. Do not assume that this protects the entire bill: taxes, fees, add-ons, device payments, and every discount may fall outside the guarantee. Confirm the scope in your notice and the applicable terms.

Is T-Mobile allowed to raise the price?
T-Mobile’s applicable service terms generally reserve the carrier’s ability to change, limit, suspend, or terminate service, subject to notice requirements and qualifications. Its published terms state that it will generally provide at least 14 days’ notice of a service change and describe protections for certain eligible price-related promotions. The exact result depends on your plan, promotion, activation date, and the terms that apply to your account. Review the T-Mobile terms and conditions.
That means two situations should be distinguished:
- Announced price change: the notice and terms may permit the stated adjustment.
- Possible billing error: the bill exceeds the notified amount, removes an unrelated credit, changes the plan incorrectly, or applies an unauthorized charge.
Do not assume that every grandfathered plan is protected, and do not assume that every price increase is automatically unrestricted. Save the notice, prior bills, current bill, plan details, and any original price-lock or promotional documents.
What to ask T-Mobile before accepting a replacement
Use customer support or an official T-Mobile retail location and request a line-by-line explanation. Ask:
- What is the exact old plan being retired or repriced?
- What is the exact replacement plan?
- What is the price difference for each line?
- Will free lines remain free?
- Will AutoPay, senior, military, first-responder, employer, and other discounts remain?
- Will taxes or fees change?
- Will device credits and financing continue without interruption?
- What benefits are being added or removed?
- Does the account qualify for a price guarantee, and what charges does it cover?
- Is another existing-customer plan available at a lower total monthly cost?
Record the interaction number and save screenshots. Do not change plans voluntarily until you understand the consequences. A voluntary change may permanently eliminate grandfathered pricing, free-line promotions, legacy international benefits, special discounts, or device-promotion eligibility.
If the bill is higher than the notice promised
- Mark the exact difference between the old bill, notice, and new bill.
- Check whether the problem is a lost credit, changed discount, tax or fee, line-level charge, or actual base-rate increase.
- Contact T-Mobile and request a correction or written explanation.
- Keep the case number, date, representative’s name if provided, screenshots, and copies of all bills.
- If the issue is not resolved, use T-Mobile’s formal complaint or escalation process and provide the same documentation.
An external complaint may help document an unresolved dispute, but it is not an automatic route to a refund. The strongest request identifies the specific charge that conflicts with the notice or account terms.

Should you switch carriers?
Compare the entire account, not one line or a new-customer advertisement. T-Mobile’s current plan comparison is the logical first reference if you want to retain your numbers, coverage, account history, and existing devices. Customers aged 55 or older can also review T-Mobile’s senior plans, subject to current eligibility and terms.
Other options include Mint Mobile, US Mobile, AT&T, and Verizon. Their suitability depends on coverage at home, work, and regular travel locations; taxes and fees; data priority; international features; customer support; line count; and whether you are willing to prepay.
Before switching, calculate:
- Monthly service after all discounts and taxes;
- Activation, switching, or prepaid costs;
- Remaining device payments;
- Lost T-Mobile device credits;
- International and hotspot usage; and
- Coverage in the places you actually use your phones.
A $5 increase does not guarantee that switching will save money once device financing, lost promotions, fees, and different benefits are included.

The original headline refers to a May 2024 T-Mobile increase of $2 or $5 per affected line, expected to appear in June 2024 billing cycles. It was limited to selected older plans, not all T-Mobile customers. Later increases in 2025 and the 2026 legacy-plan migration make the issue more complicated—and some 2026 adjustments reportedly reached $6.
Your notification and line-by-line bill are the decisive evidence. Audit every credit and benefit before changing plans, and do not voluntarily abandon a valuable legacy plan until T-Mobile confirms the total cost and the fate of your discounts, free lines, and device credits.
