Some customers on legacy premium plans, including Magenta MAX, Sprint MAX, ONE Plus and Magenta Plus, were moved to Go5G Plus at their existing base price. The migration was generally automatic and was promoted as offering more hotspot data, more high-speed data in Mexico and Canada, and improved phone-promotion eligibility.
That does not mean every T-Mobile customer qualified, every legacy feature was identical afterward, or that customers received a new handset. The campaign took place in July and August 2025, and Go5G Plus was later marked retired for new sales. Customers should rely on their own account notice and billing details rather than assume a current, nationwide upgrade offer.

What T-Mobile actually changed
T-Mobile notified selected customers on older premium plans that their accounts would be moved to Go5G Plus without increasing the matched base monthly price at the time of migration. Reporting identified affected plans such as:
- Magenta MAX
- Sprint MAX
- ONE Plus
- Magenta Plus
Some military and first-responder variants may also have received notices, but T-Mobile did not publish a complete public eligibility list in the available material. Being on one of these plans did not necessarily guarantee inclusion.

The change was presented as an automatic “free upgrade.” Customers generally did not need to select a new plan manually or sign a new phone contract. However, the exact terms depended on the individual account. The safest operational source of truth is the migration notice, the plan shown in the T-Life or My T-Mobile account, and the first bill issued after the change.
Coverage of the 2025 migration described the move as a same-price transition from selected legacy premium plans to Go5G Plus.
What customers were supposed to gain
T-Mobile’s customer messaging and reporting described several potential improvements:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- More high-speed hotspot data.
- More high-speed data in Mexico and Canada.
- Improved eligibility for some phone promotions.
- Continuation of existing account benefits, including reported free lines, discounts and streaming perks.
These benefits should be treated as account-specific rather than assumed universally. A plan name alone does not prove that every promotion, discount or line-level credit survived unchanged.
What “free” does—and does not—mean
In this context, “free” generally meant that T-Mobile matched the customer’s existing base service price when the account was migrated. It did not mean that the customer received a free smartphone or that the bill could never change.
The migration did not automatically include:
- A replacement phone.
- A permanent guarantee against future price changes.
- Waived taxes, government fees or device payments.
- Automatic access to every phone promotion.
- A guarantee that every grandfathered feature remained identical.
A separate phone promotion may require an eligible plan, a qualifying device, a trade-in, an Equipment Installment Plan, taxes or an upfront payment, and continued monthly bill credits. T-Mobile’s Go5G Next announcement, for example, described “free phone” offers using 24 monthly bill credits rather than an unconditional handset giveaway.

Go5G Plus is not the same as Go5G Next
Customers should not confuse the 2025 Go5G Plus migration with T-Mobile’s separate Go5G Next yearly-upgrade program.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Under the Go5G Next mechanism, a customer generally had to:
- Finance a qualifying phone through T-Mobile’s Equipment Installment Plan.
- Pay approximately half of the device balance.
- Trade in the phone.
- Have T-Mobile cover the remaining financed balance under the applicable upgrade program.
- Begin a new device payment agreement.
Because T-Mobile described device financing as typically lasting 24 months, customers could ordinarily reach the halfway point after about 12 months, although the exact timing depended on the device and payment balance.
A customer moved to Go5G Plus did not automatically receive Go5G Next’s annual upgrade benefit. The two plans had different upgrade positioning: Go5G Plus was associated with a longer upgrade cycle, while Go5G Next was the yearly-upgrade tier.
What happens to free lines, discounts and device credits?
T-Mobile messaging reportedly said that free lines, discounts, streaming perks and other existing benefits would transfer. That is useful, but readers should verify the result line by line rather than rely only on the total bill.
Check the following after the migration:
- The number of paid and free voice lines.
- The credit amount attached to every free or discounted line.
- Remaining device-credit amounts and the number of credits left.
- Trade-in credits and the line receiving them.
- Insider, military, first-responder, 55+ or employer discounts.
- Streaming-service inclusions and expiration dates.
- Any “forever upgrade” or annual-upgrade qualification.
- Whether adding a line later would change the price or terminate a promotion.
“Better phone deals” also does not mean every future promotion will be better. Promotional eligibility, maximum trade-in credits and bill-credit terms can vary by plan, line, device and campaign.

Price Lock: matched price versus guaranteed price
Price Lock became an important concern because customers wondered whether leaving a legacy plan would eliminate an older price-protection promise. T-Mobile later clarified, as reported in customer discussions, that customers being moved were not on the Price Lock plans affected by the relevant change and that eligible Price Lock protections remained in place.
That clarification should not be read as a guarantee for every account. Price Lock eligibility can depend on the customer’s original enrollment, plan history and specific terms. A matched monthly price is not necessarily the same thing as a contractual or program-based price guarantee.
Before accepting or voluntarily changing anything, save:
Recommended Free Tools
- The original plan name and bill.
- The Price Lock enrollment information, if applicable.
- The migration email, text or account notice.
- Screenshots of the account before and after the change.
Ask T-Mobile to confirm in writing whether the protection remains attached to the account.
Could the bill still change?
Yes. Even if the base plan price was initially matched, the total bill can change because of:
- Taxes and government fees.
- Device installment payments.
- Expiration or loss of promotional credits.
- Changes to third-party streaming benefits.
- New lines or different pricing for additional lines.
- Changing the plan again.
- Features that are discontinued or no longer transferable under a particular promotion.
T-Mobile’s plan documentation states that features may change or be discontinued and that some promotional benefits depend on maintaining a qualifying plan. Read the T-Mobile rate-card terms alongside the account-specific offer.

What to do when you receive a notice
- Save the notice. Screenshot the email, text or account message showing the old and new plan information.
- Record the old bill. Note the base plan price, line prices, discounts, free lines and device credits.
- Check the account. Compare the plan shown in T-Life or My T-Mobile with the notice.
- Audit every line. Look for missing free-line credits, discounts and device promotions.
- Review the next bill. Compare line-level charges rather than only the total.
- Contact T-Mobile promptly if something changed. Ask for the issue and promised correction to be documented on the account.
- Do not voluntarily change plans until the consequences are clear. A voluntary change may have different effects on promotions and grandfathered protections than an automatic migration.
If a free line or device promotion disappears
If a free line appears but its credit is wrong, compare the credit before and after the migration. A total bill can conceal a changed line price or a missing account-level discount.

If a device promotion disappears, do not immediately pay off the phone or cancel service. Ask T-Mobile to restore the promotion, provide the promotion code or terms, and document the escalation. Device credits may be linked to the original line, device payment agreement, qualifying plan or promotion.
If you believe you have Price Lock protection, preserve the original enrollment date, plan name, terms and migration notice. A same-price bill today does not by itself establish the same protection for the future.
Can customers opt out?
The available reporting does not establish a universal online opt-out process. The migration was described as automatic, but customers should not assume that they have no options or that a simple opt-out button exists.
Contact T-Mobile promptly if you do not want the change and ask:
- Whether the migration can be stopped or reversed.
- Whether reversing it would affect free lines, device credits or discounts.
- Whether returning to the old plan is actually possible.
- Whether the representative can attach the answer to the account.
Do not voluntarily select a different plan before understanding the consequences.
Is Go5G Plus still a current plan?
This story needs date context. T-Mobile’s internal support material marked Go5G Plus as retired for new sales in July 2025, even though existing accounts and legacy migrations may still reference the plan. It should not be presented as a universal plan currently available to every new customer.
Customers who see Go5G Plus in old documents but a different label in the app may be seeing the effects of later plan changes, retirement or renaming. Use the current account label and billing details when managing service, while keeping the original migration notice for comparison.
Should you keep the migrated plan?
Keeping it may make sense if:
- The base service price is genuinely unchanged.
- You use hotspot data or service in Mexico and Canada.
- All free lines, discounts and device credits remain intact.
- You value T-Mobile’s phone-promotion eligibility.
- No important legacy feature disappeared.
- T-Mobile confirms your Price Lock or other protection remains attached.
Investigate further if:
- You rely on a grandfathered feature more than the added Go5G benefits.
- Your account has complicated free-line, BOGO or device-credit arrangements.
- You rarely use hotspot or international data.
- You plan to add lines soon and the new pricing could be less favorable.
- You depend on an old price guarantee that has not been confirmed.
- The plan’s current terms are unclear or the account shows a different plan than the notice.
Before switching carriers
A lower advertised rate elsewhere may not be cheaper after accounting for remaining T-Mobile device balances, forfeited bill credits, free-line promotions and switching costs. Compare the full 24-month cost, including taxes, device payments, hotspot allowances, international use and coverage where you live and work.

The bottom line
T-Mobile’s “free Go5G upgrade” was a targeted 2025 migration of selected legacy customers to Go5G Plus at a matched base price. It could be valuable if the account truly received more hotspot and international data while retaining its discounts, free lines and device credits.
But it was not a free phone, not an automatic Go5G Next yearly-upgrade benefit and not a blanket promise that the bill or every legacy protection could never change. Check the account notice, preserve the old terms, audit each line and confirm Price Lock and promotional credits before treating the change as a genuine financial upgrade.
