T-Mobile’s $5-per-line price increase: Who was affected and what to check on your bill

Some T-Mobile customers on older plans saw a $5-per-phone-line increase beginning after April 2, 2025. Here’s how to identify the change and check Price Lock protections.

Some T-Mobile customers on selected older monthly plans were notified of a $5-per-affected-phone-line increase that began with billing cycles starting after April 2, 2025. It did not apply to every T-Mobile customer. Your T-Mobile notice and bill—not the name of your plan alone—are the best evidence of whether your account was included.

This article concerns the 2025 increase, not a new August 2026 price hike.

What T-Mobile changed

In an update dated March 13, 2025, T-Mobile said some customers on older monthly service plans would pay $5 more per phone line per month. The change was scheduled to begin April 2, 2025, with the new amount generally appearing on the first billing cycle that began after that date. Billing cycles differ, so customers were not expected to see the change on the same calendar-day bill.

T-Mobile said the rate-plan type, existing benefits and bill due date would remain unchanged. Existing promotions and free-line deals were also reported as remaining in place, although customers should verify the actual credits on their bills.

The announcement was described as part of pricing updates that began in 2024. Customers who had already received a rate change during the preceding year were reportedly excluded from this particular adjustment. PhoneArena’s report reproduced the key details and notification timing.

Who may have been affected?

The safest description is customers on selected older or legacy monthly plans who received an account-specific text or email from T-Mobile. That can include some grandfathered, legacy, family or Sprint-era accounts, but the available information does not establish that every customer with a particular plan label was included.

Account description What it tells you
Older ONE, Magenta or Simple Choice plan Historical context only; the plan name does not prove that this specific increase applied.
Magenta 55+, military or first-responder plan Not automatically included or excluded. Check the notice and bill.
Sprint migration or grandfathered family plan Branding alone is insufficient evidence of eligibility.
Tablet, watch, prepaid or business line Do not automatically apply the postpaid phone-line announcement.
Account with a T-Mobile text or email about a $5 increase The notification is strong evidence that the account was targeted; confirm the affected lines and effective billing cycle.

Some accounts can contain a mixture of paid, free, phone, tablet and connected-device lines. The reported increase was stated on a per-phone-line basis, so do not assume every line on an account was charged the same amount.

How much could the bill increase?

The reported change was $5 per affected phone line each month:

  • One affected phone line: $5 more per month, or $60 over 12 months.
  • Two affected phone lines: $10 more per month, or $120 over 12 months.
  • Four affected phone lines: $20 more per month, or $240 over 12 months.

These are arithmetic examples, not predictions of your final bill. Taxes, location-based charges, discounts, AutoPay credits, device payments, promotional credits and add-ons can make the total change different from the base-price increase.

How to check whether your account was affected

  1. Open the latest bill in the T-Mobile app or at the T-Mobile website.
  2. Compare it with the previous bill, preferably viewing both detailed bill PDFs.
  3. Check the monthly recurring charges or rate plan section for each phone line.
  4. Look separately for the Regulatory Programs Fee, Telco Recovery Fee, taxes, AutoPay discounts, free-line credits and other promotional credits.
  5. Search your email and text messages for T-Mobile notices around March 13, 2025.
  6. Check the billing-cycle dates. April 2 was the effective date; it was not necessarily the date your first affected bill was generated.

Save the notice and the old and new bills. They will make it easier for customer service to identify whether the change was a plan-price adjustment, a fee, a lost discount or a billing error.

Do not confuse the $5 increase with a separate fee change

A higher T-Mobile bill is not automatically evidence of the $5 plan-price increase. A separate April 2025 report said T-Mobile increased its Regulatory Programs & Telco Recovery Fee on April 24, 2025, from $3.49 to $3.99 for voice lines and from $1.40 to $1.60 for data-only lines. That was a different adjustment. TheStreet reported the fee change separately.

T-Mobile describes the Regulatory Programs and Telco Recovery Fee as a company-imposed fee, not a government-required tax or charge. Its amount can vary by plan and change over time. For example, a current T-Mobile disclosure lists different totals from the April 2025 figures: $4.49 for voice lines and $2.10 for mobile-internet lines. Check the date and exact bill category whenever comparing figures. T-Mobile’s current plan disclosure explains the treatment of the fee.

If your bill rose by less than $5 per phone line—or the increase appears under “fees” rather than “monthly service”—you may be looking at a different adjustment. A lost AutoPay discount, a changed promotion, a device charge or a new add-on can also alter the total.

Does Price Lock protect you?

Not necessarily in the simple sense of preventing every increase. T-Mobile has used several versions of Price Lock and related guarantees, and the applicable protection depends on when the account was activated or the plan was selected.

When the account or plan began Reported protection
Before April 28, 2022 May qualify for T-Mobile’s Un-contract Promise.
April 28, 2022 through January 17, 2024 May have the original Price Lock protection.
January 18, 2024 through April 22, 2025 Certain eligible plans received a “Last Month Price Lock.” T-Mobile says it would cover the final month’s recurring service charges when a customer leaves within 60 days after a price change.
From April 23, 2025 Newer eligible plans use a separate five-year price-guarantee structure, subject to exclusions.

Read the exact terms attached to your account in T-Mobile’s Price Lock FAQ. Depending on the version, the protection may give you a right to leave with the final recurring month covered rather than permanently freezing every possible bill component.

Price guarantees generally treat taxes, fees, discounts, limited-time promotions, add-ons, per-use charges, third-party services and device payments separately. They may also have deadlines and plan-specific conditions.

If you think Price Lock was violated

  1. Save the original T-Mobile notification.
  2. Download the bill showing the increase and the preceding bill.
  3. Record the plan name, account activation or migration date and affected lines.
  4. Review the specific Price Lock or Un-contract language for that account.
  5. Call 611 from a T-Mobile phone or use T-Mobile’s published customer-support options.
  6. Ask whether the increase affects recurring plan service, a fee, an add-on or a discount.
  7. If you qualify to leave under the promise, ask how to invoke it and request the deadline and terms in writing.

Eligibility depends on the account, plan, activation date and type of charge. Do not assume that every customer with the words “Price Lock” somewhere in their account has the same remedy.

Should you stay, change plans or leave?

First calculate the account’s real monthly cost:

Plan charges + taxes and fees + device payments − discounts − promotional credits = actual monthly cost.

Staying may make sense when

  • The legacy plan includes valuable international roaming, hotspot or other benefits.
  • Free lines or older promotional pricing are worth more than the increase.
  • Device credits depend on keeping the existing plan.
  • The account has predictable taxes-and-fees-included pricing.
  • A newer plan would require paying off devices or surrendering benefits.

Changing plans may make sense when

  • The account has few legacy benefits and several affected lines.
  • You are paying for features nobody uses.
  • A current plan provides comparable service at a lower total cost.
  • The new plan’s guarantee and exclusions are acceptable.
  • T-Mobile confirms that existing device credits, discounts and free lines will survive the change.

Leaving may make sense when

  • The legacy plan no longer offers a meaningful advantage.
  • A competing provider has a materially lower total cost at your home and workplace.
  • Coverage, roaming, hotspot allowances and customer support meet your needs.
  • You have no device-balance, free-line or bill-credit complications—or understand their consequences.
  • You qualify for an Un-contract Promise or Price Lock remedy.

Before changing a plan or canceling a line

  • Ask T-Mobile for the exact post-change monthly total, including taxes and fees.
  • Confirm whether AutoPay discounts require a specific payment method.
  • Ask whether any free line would become chargeable if another line is removed.
  • Check every device’s remaining balance and promotional bill credits.
  • Confirm whether switching plans ends streaming, roaming, hotspot or international benefits.
  • Get the answer in writing or save the chat transcript.
  • Do not cancel a line carrying device credits or a free-line promotion until you understand the effect.

If you compare another carrier or an MVNO, compare total cost rather than the advertised base price. Include taxes and fees, advance-payment requirements, premium-data limits, hotspot data, roaming, coverage, device financing and the value of lost T-Mobile promotions.

Update: this is a 2025 price increase

This article covers T-Mobile’s reported March 13, 2025 announcement and the increase scheduled for billing cycles beginning after April 2, 2025. It should not be read as confirmation of a new August 2026 increase. If you received a newer notice, evaluate that notice and its effective date separately.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The reported T-Mobile increase was $5 per affected phone line for selected older monthly plans, beginning with billing cycles after April 2, 2025. Check the account-specific notice and compare the bill line by line before deciding whether to stay, switch plans or leave. A fee increase, lost discount or changed promotion may look similar but requires a different response.
