What fee did T-Mobile waive?
The fee was T-Mobile’s Device Connection Charge, commonly called the DCC. It is a carrier-imposed, one-time charge associated with connecting service, not a monthly fee, government tax, or regulatory surcharge.

T-Mobile’s terms also distinguish company-imposed activation and connection charges from taxes and other fees. Its published terms reserve the right to charge activation, connection, reactivation, program, and similar fees: T-Mobile’s terms and conditions.
Who was eligible?
According to PhoneArena’s May 5, 2025 report, the offer targeted customers activating a new line online with a device connected to T-Mobile’s network.

“New line” and “new device” are not interchangeable. A customer can purchase a new phone while keeping an existing line, and that transaction may be treated differently from opening or adding a line.

Was the fee removal permanent?
No. The reported offer was described as limited-time, and T-Mobile’s current plan pages still list the $35 device connection charge. The official pages reviewed as of August 18, 2026, do not establish the exact date on which the 2025 waiver ended, so it is more accurate to call the offer temporary than to assign it a specific expiration date.
The headline claim that T-Mobile “removed” the fee should therefore be read as “waived or credited the fee for qualifying transactions.” It did not remove the charge from T-Mobile’s general pricing structure.
Why the waiver mattered
A $35 charge can be significant when it arrives alongside device taxes, down payments, installment-plan requirements, plan charges, and other fees. The arithmetic impact increases with the number of qualifying lines:

These are simple examples based on the reported $35-per-line amount, not evidence of a separate family promotion. The waiver also did not make an order tax-free or eliminate recurring service costs. T-Mobile separately discloses plan prices, taxes, and provider fees. For example, some current plan disclosures identify a recurring Regulatory Programs/Telco Recovery Fee of $4.49 per voice line per month, which is different from the one-time Device Connection Charge.
Could customers combine the waiver with other promotions?
That was not clear from the available report. Customers should not assume the fee waiver stacked with phone discounts, buy-one-get-one offers, trade-in credits, or bill-credit promotions.
Before submitting an order:
- Review the final checkout summary, not just the promotional banner.
- Confirm that the Device Connection Charge is absent or visibly credited.
- Check whether the offer applies to every line in a multi-line order.
- Save screenshots of the promotion and final total.
- Review the first bill and contact T-Mobile promptly if the charge appears.
A verbal assurance from a store employee or chat representative is less useful than written confirmation tied to the order.

What if the waiver is unavailable?
If avoiding the fee is the goal, first compare the complete cost rather than changing service solely to save $35. A customer may be better off keeping a valuable existing plan, buying an unlocked phone, or bringing a compatible unlocked device to an existing or new line.
T-Mobile directs customers to digital add-a-line options through its account tools and T-Life app. Existing customers should check the official T-Life destination and BYOD compatibility information. An unlocked device can separate the handset purchase from carrier financing, but it does not guarantee that an activation charge will be waived.

Customers who need in-person identity verification, porting help, device setup, or troubleshooting may reasonably prefer a store even if an online promotion offers a modest saving. Also remember that a phone promotion involving 24- or 36-month bill credits can create a much larger commitment than the $35 charge being avoided.

Bottom line for T-Mobile customers
The reported May 2025 promotion was a targeted, temporary waiver of T-Mobile’s $35 Device Connection Charge for online new-line activations. It was not a permanent fee repeal, and the available evidence does not confirm that it covered upgrades, stores, BYOD activations, or every connected device.
T-Mobile’s current disclosures still show the charge. If a similar offer appears again, verify eligibility and the final order total before submitting—and do not give up a valuable plan or choose an unsuitable purchase channel merely to avoid a one-time $35 fee.
