The $71.5 million figure came from the September 2024 jury verdict; it is not the damages amount in the current judgment. After a later trial limited to punitive damages, a July 2026 amended judgment awarded $17,872,253 for misappropriation, no punitive damages, and 3.99% post-judgment interest. Enforcement is stayed pending the appeal mandate, and the appeal has not been decided in the docket information available as of August 7, 2026. Read the amended final judgment.
Why headlines said T.I. and Tiny won $71 million
The lawsuit was filed by MGA Entertainment in December 2020, after it received a cease-and-desist letter from the OMG Girlz side. The group’s counterclaims alleged, among other things, that MGA copied the group’s distinctive look and misappropriated its name, likeness, or identity in connection with L.O.L. Surprise! O.M.G. fashion dolls. MGA denied infringement and misappropriation at trial. The Associated Press reported that MGA’s lawyer called the claims “baseless and offensive” in closing arguments; that was an advocate’s position, not a court finding. The Associated Press covered the 2024 verdict and the parties’ positions.

The September 2024 jury awarded $17,872,253 in compensatory damages and $53,616,759 in punitive damages. The AP rounded the combined figures to $71.5 million. That was the initial jury result—not the final damages award after the later court rulings and punitive-damages trial.
How the damages changed
| Stage | Damages outcome | Decision and collection status |
|---|---|---|
| September 2024 jury verdict | $17,872,253 compensatory damages plus $53,616,759 punitive damages; approximately $71.5 million combined, as reported by the AP. | The jury set the initial figures. Later post-trial proceedings changed the punitive-damages outcome. AP report, September 2024. |
| July 2025 post-trial ruling | The district court did not let the punitive-damages verdict stand as entered. It offered a $1 remittitur, which the OMG Girlz rejected, and ordered a partial new jury trial on punitive damages. | The ruling left the core liability verdict in place while setting up another jury proceeding. District court order, July 2025. |
| July 22, 2026 amended final judgment | $17,872,253 for common-law misappropriation; $0 punitive damages. The judgment also provides 3.99% post-judgment interest, compounded annually from the judgment date. | The court stayed enforcement pending the appeal mandate. The judgment therefore does not mean the amount is currently being collected. Amended final judgment. |
What the jury found about the dolls
At the 2024 trial, the jury found trade-dress infringement involving seven named dolls: Chillax, Roller Chick, Metal Chick, Bhad Gurl, Prism, Miss Divine, and Runaway Diva. It also found misappropriation of the OMG Girlz’ name, likeness, or identity. In response to MGA’s declaratory claims concerning other dolls, the jury made additional findings of infringement or misappropriation in specified ways. The verdict was not a finding that every O.M.G. doll infringed. The district court’s July 2025 order describes the verdict and post-trial rulings.

Why there were several trials
The case had multiple jury proceedings. The first trial ended in a mistrial. A 2023 jury found for MGA, but the district court later ordered a new trial after ruling that a jury instruction was erroneous in light of the Supreme Court’s decision in Jack Daniel’s Properties, Inc. v. VIP Products LLC. The September 2024 verdict followed that new trial. The court’s procedural history appears in its February 2025 order and July 2025 order.
After the 2025 court offered the $1 remittitur on punitive damages and the OMG Girlz rejected it, a new jury considered that issue alone. At the trial held June 23 through July 1, 2026, jurors found that MGA and Isaac Larian had not acted with oppression, fraud, or malice regarding the misappropriation for any of the seven dolls. The jury therefore awarded no punitive damages, as reflected in the amended judgment.

What happens while the appeal is pending
MGA’s appeal is docketed in the Ninth Circuit as No. 26-5071. The public docket information retrieved August 7, 2026 said the briefing schedule would be set by further order; it did not show an appellate decision. The district court’s stay means enforcement of the amended judgment is paused pending the appeal mandate. The appeal’s outcome is unresolved. Check the Ninth Circuit docket.

The final judgment records compensatory damages for misappropriation, but it does not preserve the 2024 punitive award, and collection is stayed while the appeal proceeds.
