Synopsys announced its acquisition of Cascade Semiconductor Solutions, which did business as Cascade IP, on October 18, 2004. The deal added PCI Express digital port IP for Root, Dual Mode (Endpoint/Root) and Switch Port functions to Synopsys’s existing Endpoint, PHY and verification offerings.
What Synopsys acquired
Cascade’s main contribution was digital IP for PCI Express port roles that Synopsys said its existing portfolio did not yet cover. The announcement framed the products as complements to Synopsys’s Endpoint solution, PCI Express PHY and verification IP—not as a replacement for those offerings.
| Capability | Role in the announced portfolio |
|---|---|
| Root port | Added through Cascade’s digital IP, according to Synopsys’s October 18, 2004 announcement. |
| Dual Mode (Endpoint/Root) | Added through Cascade’s digital IP, according to the announcement. |
| Switch port | Added through Cascade’s digital IP, according to the announcement. |
| Endpoint | Synopsys said it already had an Endpoint solution before the acquisition. |
| PHY and verification | Synopsys said these existing offerings complemented Cascade’s digital IP. |
Why Synopsys said it bought Cascade
Synopsys presented the acquisition as a way to offer SoC designers a broader PCI Express solution from one supplier. John Chilton, then senior vice president and general manager of Synopsys Solutions Group, said: “Designers want a complete solution available from one supplier to help reduce design risk and lower the total costs of implementing PCI Express on an SoC.” That was the company’s stated rationale, not an independently measured result of the deal.
Cascade president and CEO Jing-Fan Zhang called the transaction “a significant event in the PCI Express community.” Both comments appeared in Synopsys’s October 18, 2004 announcement and reflect the executives’ views at the time.

- 【7 ports PCIe USB card】 There is a 2-phase independent power supply module, which can feed one interface per output port to escape power shortage. Can operate without an external or auxiliary power supply; the seven interfaces operate independently and do not affect each other. Seven USB 3.0 Type A ports can be added externally to the PC case. Note: Not compatible with PS3/PS4.
- 【High Speed Transmission】USB3.0 theoretical speed up to 5Gbps, provides 10 times faster transmission speed than USB2.0. This usb expansion card enables quick access to files and transfer of HD movies, photos, music, etc.
- 【Stable power supply】The usb pcie card adopt NEC720201&NEC720210 chip. The USB interface can supply 5V2A power to external devices. Solid capacitors with good performance are used for low impedance, low temperature stability, and high temperature wave resistance.
- 【7 independent solid capacitors】Each interface has a stable voltage solid capacitor to ensure a stable power supply. The dielectric material of the solid capacitors is made of conductive polymer material, which has the advantages of high stability, long life, and low ESR (faster charging and discharging speed).
- 【Wide compatibility】 PCI-E X1 X4 X8 X16 compatible. Note: Not compatible with older PCI, backward compatible with USB 2.0 / 1.1, 64-bit and 32-bit Windows 11 / 10 / 8 / 7 / XP / Linux, not Mac compatible. Note: WIN8 and WIN10/11 users do not need to install the drive; XP and WIN7 users can download, unzip, install, and complete. Deal timing, price and employees
Synopsys announced the acquisition on October 18, 2004, and its fiscal 2004 annual report says it was completed that month. EE Times reported at announcement that the purchase price was undisclosed and that Cascade’s ten employees would join Synopsys’s DesignWare IP group. The later annual report documented the consideration as follows:
| Consideration | Reported terms |
|---|---|
| Upfront payment | $15.8 million, as stated in Synopsys’s fiscal 2004 annual report. |
| Contingent consideration | Up to $10.0 million, tied to performance milestones over the three years after the acquisition, according to the same annual report. |
How to understand the figures
Synopsys’s 2004 announcement said the company and Cascade had achieved PCI Express design wins at more than 25 companies. That is a historical, company-reported count at the time of the deal; it is not a current total, and the announcement does not establish that the acquisition caused those wins.

- Instantly add 7 high-speed USB 3.0 ports to your desktop PC via PCIe slot, solving the problem of insufficient USB ports for peripherals like keyboards, mice, printers, and external drives.
- Delivers blazing-fast data transfer speeds up to 5Gbps (10x faster than USB 2.0), ideal for transferring large files, HD videos, or gaming peripherals without lag.
- Features UASP (USB Attached SCSI Protocol) technology and 4 dedicated channels to maximize throughput and reduce CPU load by up to 20%, ensuring smoother multitasking.
- Plug-and-play installation with driver-free support for Windows 11/10/8/7/XP/Vista and Linux (Note: Some older systems may require drivers). Compatible with gaming PCs, workstations, and servers.
- Equipped with over-current protection and a heat-dissipating aluminum heatsink to prevent overheating, ensuring stable performance even during prolonged heavy use
As a later measure of the scale Synopsys attributed to its PCI Express IP business, its June 2024 PCIe 7.0 announcement cited more than two decades of experience and more than 3,000 design wins. That, too, is a Synopsys claim published in 2024—not an independently verified outcome attributed to Cascade’s acquisition.

Synopsys’s current PCI Express portfolio description includes controller, PHY, IDE security and verification IP, and identifies AI, high-performance computing, networking, storage, mobile and automotive SoCs among the markets served. Those present-day categories help illustrate how broad the portfolio is now, but they do not show that Cascade’s specific 2004 blocks remain in use or map one-to-one to current products.
