Syngenta has begun consulting on a proposal to close its Grangemouth operation, putting 377 jobs at risk, according to October 2026 news coverage. The proposal is not a confirmed closure, and the reported Scottish Enterprise funding of more than £2 million does not, on the information currently reported, establish that the grant was intended to guarantee those jobs.

What has Syngenta proposed?

Syngenta, a chemical manufacturer, is consulting on a proposal to cease operations at its Grangemouth site. The reported figure is 377 jobs at risk. That is the number associated with the proposal—not a count of redundancies already made—and consultation means the closure is not yet a completed decision.

October 2026 coverage also reports that Syngenta received more than £2 million from Scottish Enterprise a little over a year earlier. The reporting does not establish the award’s exact amount, date, project scope or conditions, or whether it included a commitment to preserve jobs. It is therefore not possible to conclude from the reported grant and proposal alone that public funding was given to protect these specific 377 roles.

What is known about the grant—and what is not?

The reported funder is Scottish Enterprise and the reported amount is more than £2 million. The underlying award terms have not been established in the available reporting. To assess whether the proposed closure conflicts with the grant’s purpose, readers would need the award record or statements from Scottish Enterprise or Syngenta setting out:

  • the precise sum and date of the award;
  • what project or investment the money supported;
  • any conditions, employment commitments or repayment provisions; and
  • whether any conditions remain in force during the consultation.

Without those details, “funding to protect Grangemouth jobs” should not be treated as a verified description of the grant’s contractual purpose. A public grant may support a particular investment or activity without guaranteeing that a site will remain open indefinitely; whether that is the case here depends on the award terms.

How does this compare with other Grangemouth funding and job announcements?

Grangemouth has several distinct industrial operations, and public announcements about one are not evidence of support for another. These reported sums and job figures refer to different businesses, facilities or proposed projects:

Company or project Funding or figure What it refers to Status and qualification
Syngenta, Grangemouth chemical operation More than £2 million reported from Scottish Enterprise Syngenta’s prior award; the precise purpose and conditions are not established in October 2026 coverage Closure proposal under consultation; 377 jobs reported at risk, not confirmed redundancies
Petroineos oil refinery More than $775 million in reported losses since 2011; more than $1.2 billion invested since 2011 to maintain safe operation Figures reported by the UK Government on 12 September 2024 about the refinery business Petroineos had confirmed it would cease refining from the second quarter of 2025; these figures are not about Syngenta
Project Willow and Grangemouth transition £200 million UK support through the National Wealth Fund and a £25 million Scottish Government Just Transition Fund Support announced on 19 March 2025 alongside a feasibility study identifying nine potential industrial options, including plastics recycling and hydrogen production Future investment opportunities; the announcements do not show that every option is funded, operating or connected to Syngenta
MiAlgae and Celtic Renewables £1.5 million for MiAlgae; £6.23 million for Celtic Renewables Separate Scottish Government project announcements in 2025 Government forecasts of up to 310 MiAlgae jobs over five years and up to 149 Celtic Renewables roles by 2030 are projections, not established job counts or Syngenta commitments
INEOS ethylene plant £150 million joint UK Government–INEOS package announced on 17 December 2025 Support for maintaining the ethylene plant The UK Government said the agreement would protect 500 jobs; this is a separate plant and agreement, not the Syngenta proposal or Petroineos refinery

The Scottish Government’s 2025 Industrial Just Transition Plan also described up to £33 million for the plan and £2.8 million of a £5 million total commitment for an INEOS fuel-switching project. Those figures concern the wider transition and a separate project; they do not establish conditions attached to Syngenta’s Scottish Enterprise award.

Why the refinery and ethylene plant stories are not the same closure

Grangemouth is an industrial cluster, not a single company or facility. The Petroineos oil refinery, Syngenta’s chemical operation and the INEOS ethylene plant are distinct operations. Petroineos’s planned end to oil refining from the second quarter of 2025 does not itself mean all industrial activity at Grangemouth ended. Likewise, the later UK Government–INEOS package concerned the ethylene plant, not Syngenta.

Project Willow and transition-fund announcements describe possible future uses and support for the wider area. They do not show that Syngenta has withdrawn its proposal, nor do projected jobs at separate projects automatically replace jobs at Syngenta.

What workers and local readers should watch next

The key developments are the outcome of Syngenta’s consultation and the terms of the Scottish Enterprise award. Until the company announces a decision, the 377 figure remains jobs at risk rather than confirmed job losses. The grant record or a direct statement from Scottish Enterprise or Syngenta would clarify whether the award carried employment conditions and what would happen if the proposal proceeds.

For households affected by the uncertainty, it is sensible to distinguish consultation news from a final redundancy announcement. The public figures for other Grangemouth employers and proposed projects provide context for the area, but they do not establish the outcome for Syngenta workers.
