Use Swiss francs (CHF) for cash purchases in Switzerland. Some businesses accept euro cash if they agree to the sale, but acceptance is not guaranteed and change is returned in francs. Cards are accepted almost everywhere, according to Switzerland Tourism, though your card issuer may charge foreign-transaction or ATM fees.
Why Swiss francs are the dependable choice
Switzerland’s domestic currency is the Swiss franc, not the euro. The Federal Finance Administration defines the franc as the country’s currency; Swiss legal tender includes banknotes, coins and sight deposits at the Swiss National Bank. Coin payments are limited to 100 coins per payment. Federal Finance Administration: Currency
For everyday cash spending, CHF is therefore the reliable option. You can use it without needing a business to make an exception or agree to a particular exchange calculation.
Can you pay in euros in Switzerland?
Yes, but only where the business agrees. SECO’s consumer FAQ says a price may be paid in euros if both parties to the transaction agree, so euro acceptance is not something travelers should assume at every shop, restaurant or hotel. SECO consumer FAQ

When paying by card makes sense
Switzerland Tourism describes cash, credit cards and debit cards as commonly accepted options and says cards are accepted almost everywhere. Its list includes Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Maestro, as well as Apple Pay and Google Pay. Switzerland Tourism: Means of payment
Acceptance does not mean every card costs the same to use. Your card issuer may apply foreign-transaction fees to purchases or charges for ATM withdrawals; check your own card terms before traveling. The tourism guidance does not give a universal fee or exchange rate, so look at the terms and rate shown for your particular transaction.

Where to get Swiss francs
Switzerland Tourism says visitors can get francs from bank ATMs in Switzerland, airport counters and serviced railway-station booking counters. It also recommends withdrawing CHF at a bank ATM or paying by card. Switzerland Tourism: Can I use euros to pay in Switzerland? Switzerland Tourism: Means of payment
Before withdrawing, check your bank’s ATM charges and any exchange-rate terms that apply to your account. If you exchange money at a counter, review the rate and fees presented for that transaction rather than assuming one provider or location is always the best value.
