If you receive a notice that your plan is ending, use the notice—not the headline—to confirm your coverage end date, enrollment options, and any rights to buy Medigap coverage.
What the 390,000 figure does—and does not—show
A Yahoo Finance article republished from TheStreet on October 11, 2026, reported that Suze Orman warned on her October 4 podcast about UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans being discontinued for 2027. The report says UnitedHealthcare told Bloomberg on October 1 that it would discontinue plans covering about 390,000 members. It also says UnitedHealth had not confirmed Orman’s 390,000 figure. Those details do not establish that the company directly confirmed that exact count.

The same report says Humana disclosed nonrenewals affecting approximately 600,000 members, and that CVS Health through Aetna and Centene were also scaling back Medicare Advantage offerings. Those announcements were not independently checked, so treat these numbers and descriptions as reported rather than verified enrollment counts.
The article also attributes to a February 2026 JAMA study by Mark Meiselbach and colleagues a finding that roughly 2.9 million Medicare Advantage enrollees—about one in 10—were reportedly forced out of plans heading into 2026. The underlying study was not reviewed here; the figure should not be read as a count for 2027.

What to do if your plan is ending
Start with the plan’s termination or nonrenewal notice. Confirm the exact plan name, the date coverage ends, and what the notice says about your options. The report describes October 15 through December 7, 2026, as the federal Medicare Open Enrollment period, but your notice may also describe other rights or deadlines. Confirm current dates and your eligibility through official Medicare guidance or a qualified counselor.
- Read the notice closely. Keep it, note any response dates, and ask the insurer or Medicare to clarify anything unclear. Do not assume the end date or available choices from a news story.
- Check plans available where you live. Compare current offerings for your ZIP code and the coverage year in question. A plan available in one area may not be offered in another.
- Compare coverage, not just premiums. Check whether your doctors and hospitals participate, whether your prescriptions are covered and at what cost, and what premiums, cost-sharing, and annual out-of-pocket exposure would apply.
- Confirm the effective date. Ask when new coverage would begin and how to avoid a gap. The date and available enrollment route depend on your circumstances and the notice.
- Get help with individual rights. Ask Medicare, your State Health Insurance Assistance Program, or a licensed Medicare counselor about your options. Verify the counselor’s credentials, geographic coverage, and any fees.
Choosing another Medicare Advantage plan or Original Medicare
A plan ending does not automatically make one replacement choice right for everyone. Compare the available alternatives against your health care needs, costs, and eligibility for supplemental coverage.

Another Medicare Advantage plan
Check whether your doctors, hospitals, and preferred pharmacies are in network, and review the plan’s drug formulary. Compare premiums, copayments or coinsurance, and the plan’s out-of-pocket maximum. Confirm that the plan will be available in your ZIP code for the relevant year.

Original Medicare, with or without Medigap
The report says members whose plans end may return to Original Medicare if they do nothing, and that a terminated plan may trigger a time-limited guaranteed-issue opportunity to buy certain Medigap coverage. Neither point should be assumed to apply in every case. The exact notice, applicable federal protections, and state rules can affect eligibility and deadlines. Ask which Medigap policies, if any, you can buy without medical underwriting, and by what date.
Rank #3
The report gives 2026 Original Medicare figures of a $1,736 Part A hospital deductible and $217 per day in skilled-nursing facility coinsurance for days 21–100. Those are figures reported by Yahoo Finance/TheStreet, not independently checked against CMS here. They cover only the listed charges; verify current costs and your likely total expenses before comparing coverage.
