It goes beyond “green IT”: a credible program covers materials, manufacturing, cloud and software use, workers, human rights, accessibility, data practices, repair, reuse and end-of-life outcomes.
What sustainable IT includes
Green IT focuses on reducing technology’s direct environmental footprint, such as electricity, emissions, water and e-waste. IT for green uses digital systems to reduce impacts elsewhere—for example, optimizing logistics, buildings or industrial energy. Sustainable IT combines both with social, economic and governance responsibilities across the technology lifecycle.
An efficiency project is not automatically sustainable. A logistics platform may reduce fuel use while increasing data-center demand, surveillance or labor risks. Its enabling benefits must therefore be assessed alongside its own impacts.
The business case—and its limits
- Lower energy, cloud, maintenance and replacement costs through right-sizing and longer asset life.
- Greater resilience against energy-price, resource and supply-chain volatility.
- Better procurement decisions, asset utilization and recovery value.
- Stronger responses to customer, investor and regulatory reporting expectations.
- Potential gains in workforce trust, accessibility and reputation.
Do not reduce the case to a short-term financial return. Some controls—such as human-rights due diligence, accessible design and secure data destruction—primarily reduce legal, operational and social harm.

Follow technology from need to end of life
The largest mistake in green-IT programs is optimizing the use phase while ignoring what came before and after it. Use this lifecycle when setting requirements, budgets and ownership:
- Need and requirements: avoid an unnecessary purchase or workload; define the actual business, security and accessibility requirement.
- Design and architecture: choose efficient software, data flows, capacity and resilience patterns.
- Procurement: evaluate repairability, support, supplier conduct, footprint evidence and total cost.
- Manufacturing and construction: account for extraction, components, factories, buildings and equipment.
- Transport and deployment: minimize packaging and shipments and plan efficient installation.
- Use and maintenance: manage energy, cooling, patches, utilization, data retention and repairs.
- Upgrade, repair and redeployment: replace components, reassign equipment and extend useful life where safe.
- Retirement: securely wipe data, then resell, refurbish, recycle or dispose of equipment with documented custody.
The lowest-energy device in operation is not necessarily the lowest-impact choice overall. Manufacturing a replacement can outweigh savings from a short remaining service period.
Embodied and operational emissions
Embodied carbon covers raw-material extraction, component production, manufacturing, transport and end-of-life treatment. Operational carbon comes from electricity and other energy during use. Organizational Scope 1, 2 and 3 categories are accounting boundaries; they are not the same thing as a product’s complete lifecycle footprint.
Embodied impacts are especially material for laptops, phones, monitors, servers, storage, networking equipment, AI accelerators and data-center construction. A manufacturer’s product-carbon figure is usually a modeled estimate. Dell’s product data sheet, for example, says the estimate depends on configuration, manufacturing location, use location, lifetime and methodology assumptions: Dell product carbon-footprint data sheet.

Why headline percentages differ
There is no single settled percentage for ICT’s share of global emissions. The ITU material cites approximately 1.4% of global greenhouse-gas emissions in 2020, while an EU rolling-plan page presents a broader 2.1%–3.9% range. The difference reflects boundaries, geography, dates, treatment of supply chains and shared infrastructure, and whether enabling effects are counted. See the ITU-T L.1450:2025 methodology and the EU rolling plan before comparing figures.
Cloud, data centers and AI
Moving to the cloud is not inherently sustainable. Consolidation can improve utilization and reduce stranded capacity, but migration may also increase workloads, data duplication, transfers and consumption.
Actions for infrastructure teams
- Measure utilization and eliminate idle servers, databases, disks and test environments.
- Right-size compute and storage; use autoscaling and shutdown schedules where service levels permit.
- Apply retention, deletion, tiering and deduplication policies consistent with legal holds.
- Schedule flexible workloads in lower-carbon periods or regions when latency, sovereignty, resilience and availability requirements allow.
- Evaluate cooling efficiency, water use, hardware refresh cycles and data-center resilience together.
- Keep exceptions for security, accessibility, disaster recovery and regulatory requirements.
Google Cloud Carbon Footprint provides location-based and market-based views with project and product granularity. Google says it is available at no charge to Google Cloud customers; exporting to BigQuery can incur normal BigQuery charges. AWS provides workload guidance through its sustainability tools. AWS announced a free standalone Sustainability console on March 31, 2026, replacing the older Customer Carbon Footprint Tool; AWS said that older tool was scheduled for deprecation on June 30, 2026 (transition notice).
AI workload choices
Separate training from inference. Select the smallest model that meets quality requirements; use batching, caching, quantization, efficient hardware and sensible retention. Measure energy, water, hardware and data-transfer effects, then test for rebound: a lower cost per request can produce more total requests and higher absolute consumption.

Sustainable software engineering
Software drives compute, memory, storage, network traffic and device energy. It also determines whether older hardware remains usable. Include sustainability in architecture reviews and definition-of-done criteria rather than treating it as a late optimization.
- Set measurable performance and energy budgets for representative workloads.
- Reduce polling, background activity, excessive observability and unnecessary updates.
- Compress and cache assets; optimize queries, APIs, algorithms and data structures.
- Delete redundant data and right-size infrastructure.
- Use lower-carbon scheduling or regions only where reliability, latency and sovereignty remain acceptable.
- Never trade away security, accessibility, privacy or user experience for a nominal energy gain.
ISO/IEC TS 20125-1:2026, published in February 2026, provides environmental ecopractices across requirements, design, implementation, operations, maintenance and end of life. It explicitly does not cover social, cultural, diversity, inclusion or exclusion issues, so it is not a complete sustainable-IT standard.
Procurement and circular hardware
The most effective purchase is often the one you avoid. The ITU’s circular-procurement toolbox recommends embedding criteria in policy, solicitation, evaluation, award, contract management and performance review.
Procurement checklist
- Reuse existing equipment before buying; specify role-appropriate rather than maximum specifications.
- Require replaceable batteries and components, repair manuals, spare-parts availability and a realistic warranty.
- Confirm operating-system and security-update support dates.
- Request product-footprint methodology, configuration, geography, lifetime and data quality.
- Assess recycled content, hazardous-substance controls and packaging.
- Include refurbishment, redeployment, take-back, resale and certified data-destruction terms.
- Ask about forced and child labor, wages, safety, freedom of association, recruitment fees, minerals and subcontractor visibility.
- Score total cost and lifecycle impact, not purchase price alone.
The ITU procurement guide recommends lifecycle assessment, ecolabels, environmental and labor law compliance, supplier capacity and measurable KPIs. Manufacturer services such as Lenovo’s TruScale Device as a Service or Dell’s procurement guidance may help, but compare evidence and downstream outcomes rather than branding.

When to replace a device
Replace only when at least one material condition applies:
- Necessary security updates are unavailable.
- Performance or compatibility fails a business-critical requirement.
- Repair is unsafe, unavailable or uneconomic.
- Energy savings from a suitable replacement materially exceed its new embodied impact over the remaining service period.
- The replacement enables a measurable operational benefit greater than its embodied impact.
- Accessibility, safety or regulatory requirements cannot otherwise be met.
Keep equipment when support and security remain adequate, components can be replaced, performance is sufficient, or it can be reassigned. Asset tracking, secure wiping and patch management make reuse practical.
E-waste and secure end of life
Electronics contain recoverable metals as well as hazardous substances. Collection is not the same as reuse, refurbishment, recycling or safe disposal. Require a documented chain of custody, verified downstream processors and controls against export to jurisdictions without adequate treatment. Prioritize reuse before material recycling, and never release a device until data destruction is verified.
ITU material cited 7.8 kg of e-waste per person and only 22.3% formally collected and recycled in an environmentally sound manner for the reporting year covered by that material. Treat those as dated, attributed figures, not timeless rates: ITU e-waste material.

Social sustainability is not optional
People in the supply chain
Supplier due diligence should cover forced and child labor, working hours, wages, safety, freedom of association, migrant-worker protections, recruitment fees, conflict and high-risk minerals, audit findings, corrective actions, grievance channels and subcontractors. The ITU connects these issues with circularity and e-waste in its green ICT recommendations.
ISO 14075:2024 sets principles and a framework for social life-cycle assessment, including scope, inventory, impact assessment, interpretation and reporting.
Accessibility, privacy and inclusion
- Test websites and internal applications with screen readers, keyboards, captions, contrast and cognitive-access needs.
- Procure accessible hardware and assistive technologies with disabled users involved in testing.
- Assess privacy, surveillance and algorithmic-discrimination risks alongside energy use.
- Consider affordability, connectivity, devices, language, support and digital skills when transformation changes access to services.
Workforce transition
Automation, outsourcing, data-center consolidation and AI can change jobs and job quality. Plan consultation, training, redeployment and safe working conditions rather than treating labor effects as an externality.
Measure what can be defended
Document organizational and operational boundaries, reporting year, geography, device and workload assumptions, expected lifetimes, electricity factors, location-based versus market-based Scope 2 treatment, renewable-energy certificates, shared-cloud allocation, embodied emissions, uncertainty and whether data is measured, modeled, estimated or supplier-reported. Do not compare vendor numbers without checking these definitions.
Useful KPI groups
| Area | Examples |
|---|---|
| Environmental | kWh per user, device, transaction or workload; cloud emissions by account, project, region and service; embodied carbon per device category; average device age and useful life; repair, reuse and refurbishment rates; formally recycled e-waste; data-center PUE or WUE where appropriate. |
| Social | Supplier human-rights coverage; corrective-action closure; accessibility conformance and disabled-user testing; assistive-technology availability; training and redeployment; privacy and responsible-AI assessments; digital-inclusion outcomes. |
| Business | Total cost of ownership; avoided purchases; downtime; security-support coverage; procurement savings; cost per workload or transaction; employee productivity and satisfaction. |
Every metric needs an owner, action, budget and review date. A dashboard that does not change decisions is reporting, not improvement.
A practical implementation roadmap
First 30 days
- Appoint an executive owner and involve IT, procurement, finance, security, facilities, HR and sustainability.
- Inventory devices, cloud accounts, data centers and major software workloads.
- Record device age, support status, energy information and disposal routes.
- List the largest data and evidence gaps.
Days 31–90
- Set a baseline with stated boundaries and assumptions.
- Select three high-impact interventions, such as retiring idle cloud resources, repairing devices or reducing unnecessary refreshes.
- Add repair, support, labor, footprint and take-back criteria to solicitations.
- Begin endpoint and cloud measurement.
Months 4–12
- Redeploy and refurbish equipment through controlled workflows.
- Optimize major workloads, storage and AI use.
- Expand supplier due diligence and set absolute and intensity targets.
- Publish internal results, exceptions and data-quality limitations.
Year 2 and beyond
- Integrate sustainability into architecture governance and portfolio funding.
- Improve supplier and product data and add social lifecycle indicators.
- Use independent assurance for material disclosures.
- Revisit targets as workloads, AI adoption, regulation and energy systems change.
Choosing measurement software
Start with spreadsheets, documented factors, asset-management data and the cloud provider’s included dashboard. Add an enterprise platform when multi-business governance, Scope 3 complexity, assurance or reporting volume justifies it. Microsoft lists Sustainability Manager pricing of US$4,000 per tenant per month for Essentials and US$12,000 for Premium on its 2026 page; confirm current availability and pricing through its purchase information and product page.
Software cannot substitute for an asset inventory, procurement rules, workload ownership, supplier evidence or reduction targets. Prefer transparent methodology, auditability and useful operational data over a green label.
