Singapore did arrest nine people in a February 2025 investigation involving servers that may have contained Nvidia chips. But “Nvidia chip smugglers” is shorthand, not an established legal finding. The Singapore prosecution alleges false end-user declarations, fraud, money laundering and related corporate offences. By July 2026, four individuals and four companies faced charges. Authorities have not publicly established that the servers reached China or DeepSeek, or that anyone has been convicted of smuggling Nvidia chips.
What happened in Singapore?
Singapore Police Force and Singapore Customs raided 22 locations on February 26, 2025, arresting nine people. Three men—Alan Wei Zhaolun, Aaron Woon Guo Jie and Li Ming—were charged the following day over alleged fraud connected with the purchase and movement of servers. The case later expanded: Aperia International’s chief financial officer Jenny Lim was charged on April 2, 2026, and a July 1 police announcement described additional charges against four individuals and charges against four companies.
The companies named by police are Aperia International Pte Ltd, A-Speed Infotech Pte Ltd, Aperia Cloud Services (II) Pte Ltd and Luxuriate Your Life Pte Ltd. Charges are allegations; neither the individuals nor the companies should be treated as guilty unless a court proves the case.
Police also reported more than S$56 million in assets seized or placed under a prohibition-of-disposal order, including an approximately S$55 million Good Class Bungalow and about S$1 million in frozen bank funds. Those measures preserve assets during proceedings; they are not a forfeiture judgment.

Follow the documented server route
Singapore’s official account describes this route:
- Servers were obtained from U.S.-linked suppliers.
- They were supplied to Singapore-based companies.
- The servers were exported from Singapore to Malaysia.
- The destination after Malaysia was not known at the March 2025 ministerial briefing.
The route does not establish that the equipment entered China. Singapore’s Home Affairs Minister said investigators did not yet know whether Malaysia was the final destination or whether the servers moved onward. What defendants are alleged to have done
The central allegation is that purchasers told server suppliers an Aperia Group company would be the authorized end user, while prosecutors say that representation was false. Earlier charges alleged that the servers would not be transferred to anyone other than the approved ultimate consignee or end user.

Singapore police said the alleged representations concerned servers purchased from Dell, Super Micro Computer and Asus. The July 2026 release lists allegations including:
- Fraud by false representation
- Criminal conspiracy
- Money laundering
- Fraudulent trading
- Computer-misuse offences
- Companies Act offences
These allegations describe deception in commercial purchasing and subsequent transactions. They do not, by themselves, prove that Nvidia chips were smuggled into China. The suppliers named in the police release are not charged as defendants in that release.

Wei was identified by police as a key officer of the Aperia Group; Woon as another key officer; Lim as Aperia International’s CFO; and Li as the controller of Luxuriate Your Life. Those descriptions identify roles, not findings of liability.
Were Nvidia chips actually found?
Singapore officials said the servers may have contained Nvidia chips and may have been subject to U.S. export controls. The minister described that assessment as preliminary and said authorities did not yet know with certainty what the servers contained. The cited police release establishes allegations involving servers and suppliers, not a completed finding that specific Nvidia models were seized.
Accordingly, the most accurate description is an investigation involving servers that may have contained export-controlled Nvidia hardware—not proof that Nvidia chips were confiscated in a smuggling operation.

Why China and DeepSeek entered the story
The case attracted attention amid questions about whether advanced U.S.-controlled Nvidia chips could reach China through Southeast Asian intermediaries. On February 1, 2025, Singapore’s Ministry of Trade and Industry addressed questions about whether DeepSeek had obtained such chips through Singapore. The ministry cited Nvidia’s statement that there was no reason to believe DeepSeek obtained export-controlled products from Singapore. See the MTI statement.
That controversy is context, not proof in this prosecution. The official Singapore briefing stopped at Malaysia and warned against speculation about China or DeepSeek. No cited Singapore source establishes that these servers reached either destination, or that DeepSeek received them.

Singapore’s public case is based on Singapore criminal and corporate law. Officials have said Singapore does not have a general obligation to enforce another country’s unilateral export controls, while expecting businesses operating there to consider applicable foreign restrictions and deal transparently.

That is why the charges focus on alleged false representations, conspiracy, money laundering, fraudulent trading, computer misuse and company-law breaches. They are not equivalent to a U.S. export-control prosecution. A separate U.S. case, if one were brought, would involve different statutes, evidence and authorities.
How much money is involved?
Public figures refer to different categories and should not be conflated:

The US$390 million figure is not the same as the S$56 million-plus in assets. Neither figure represents Nvidia chips proven to have been smuggled.
