Superman (2025) set a global opening-weekend record for a solo Superman film, taking in $220 million worldwide, according to Warner Bros. Discovery. That is a notable launch for DC Studios under James Gunn and Peter Safran—not an all-time Warner Bros. box-office record or proof that the film, or the wider studio, turned a profit.
What record did the new Superman movie break?
Warner Bros. Discovery said Superman generated $220 million worldwide in its opening weekend, the strongest global debut for a solo Superman film. The company also called it DC Studios’ strongest global opening since 2022. Those are specific comparisons: the record is for a solo Superman film’s global opening, not for every Warner Bros. release or every DC movie. Warner Bros. Discovery’s second-quarter 2025 shareholder letter presents both claims as part of the company’s own slate update.

How much did Superman make at the box office?
Box Office Mojo listed the film’s worldwide theatrical gross at $618,723,803 when checked on October 8, 2026. Its reported breakdown was $354,223,803 domestic and $264,500,000 international. These are tracker figures and may be revised. Box Office Mojo’s title page also lists a $125,021,735 domestic opening.
Why some opening figures differ
The Associated Press reported the Sunday studio estimate on July 13, 2025: $122 million in the United States and Canada and $95 million from 78 international markets. Those contemporaneous estimates are not directly interchangeable with the later listed domestic opening of $125,021,735. The Numbers reports the same later domestic opening figure as Box Office Mojo. The Associated Press report and The Numbers’ film summary provide the respective figures.

Domestic and international performance
On Box Office Mojo’s reported totals, domestic receipts made up a little over half of the worldwide gross, with the rest coming from international markets. The split describes where ticket revenue was recorded; it does not show how much Warner Bros. ultimately retained after theater shares, distribution costs, marketing, and other expenses.
Does the box office mean Superman was profitable?
No profit conclusion follows from comparing the reported gross with the reported production budget. Box Office Mojo lists a $225 million production budget, but a theatrical gross is not the studio’s net revenue: theaters keep a portion of ticket sales, and gross-to-budget arithmetic leaves out marketing and other costs as well as revenue from later distribution. The available figures do not establish the film’s overall profitability.
IMAX Corporation said the film earned $30.4 million globally in IMAX theaters during its opening, including $19.1 million in North America. IMAX said that North American amount represented 15.6% of the domestic debut and was its highest market share for an opening film with more than $100 million domestically. These are IMAX’s corporate figures and characterization, not a separate measure of studio profit. IMAX’s opening-weekend announcement gives the company’s account.

The “new era” framing concerns DC Studios under co-chief executives James Gunn and Peter Safran. Gunn wrote and directed the film; Warner Bros. Pictures distributed it. Warner Bros. Discovery said in its shareholder letter that “Superman marked the beginning of a new era for DC Studios, extending our strong creative momentum into the third quarter.” That is the company’s description of the film’s role, not an independent finding that the wider Warner Bros. business has turned around.

The letter also said Warner Bros. Studios had distributed five consecutive films that opened above $45 million domestically. That is a studio slate claim, distinct from Superman’s solo-character global opening record. A strong first weekend is evidence of a successful launch; by itself, it cannot establish sustained audience trust or predict how the rest of DC Studios’ slate will perform.
Warner Bros. distribution chief Jeffrey Goldstein told the Associated Press on July 13, 2025: “We needed to get the trust of the fanbase, and we didn’t have it. They were clear to us that we needed to take a step back and reinvent ourselves.” The quote describes the challenge the studio said it faced; the opening weekend does not, on its own, show whether that trust has been durably rebuilt.
