A superfecta is a horse-racing wager in which you must select the first four finishers in the correct order. A straight ticket covers one sequence; a box covers every order of the horses you select; and a key fixes one or more horses in chosen positions. The broader the coverage, the more combinations—and the higher the ticket cost.
What a superfecta bet requires
For one race, your ticket must name the horses that finish first, second, third and fourth, in that exact sequence. For example, a ticket listing 3–7–2–5 wins only if horse 3 finishes first, horse 7 second, horse 2 third and horse 5 fourth. Choosing the right four horses in a different order is not enough for that straight sequence.
A superfecta is a pari-mutuel wager, not a bet at fixed odds: the payout depends on the pool and applicable deductions. NYRA describes the selection as the first four horses “in the correct order” in its Aqueduct betting FAQ. Rules and availability depend on the venue and jurisdiction.
How straight, box and key tickets differ

Straight
A straight ticket is the simplest construction: you choose one horse for each of the four positions, and the finish must match exactly. It covers fewer sequences than a box, but the lower combination count also means a lower cost at the same unit amount.

Box
A box covers all possible finishing orders for the horses on the ticket, with each horse appearing once in the first four positions. A four-horse box therefore covers 24 sequences. NYRA’s 2025 Saratoga wagering guide gives a four-horse, ten-cent superfecta box as a $2.40 wager: 24 combinations at $0.10 each.
A box buys coverage of more orders, not better value or a guarantee of a return. Adding horses increases the number of combinations, so check the displayed total before placing the bet.

Key or part-wheel
A key holds a selected horse—or horses—in specified finishing positions while other selected horses fill the remaining slots. The cost depends on the positions and selections in the construction. NYRA’s Saratoga guide illustrates keys and other ticket structures; confirm the betslip’s combination count and total before submitting.
How to calculate a superfecta ticket’s cost
Multiply the wager’s unit amount by the number of combinations it covers. A four-horse box at a ten-cent unit costs 24 × $0.10 = $2.40, as in NYRA’s 2025 Saratoga example. A straight ticket at the same unit would cover one sequence and cost $0.10, if that denomination is accepted at the venue.

The combination count changes with the ticket structure and number of horses. A key or part-wheel does not have one standard cost: use the betslip’s combination total, multiply by the selected unit, and verify the amount before placing the wager.

There is no single minimum or ticketing method established for every track. NYRA’s Aqueduct FAQ lists a $0.10 superfecta minimum, while NYRA’s 2025 Saratoga guide says dime superfectas cannot be made at a teller window. These are venue-specific details; check the official program, wagering interface or track rules for the particular race.

Local rules also determine what happens when no ticket correctly selects all four finishers and how scratches, coupled entries, dead heats, short fields or no-contests affect settlement. Ohio’s Rule 3769-3-23, effective July 31, 2025, describes several possible fallback or carryover approaches. Maryland’s regulation addresses similar settlement cases, but neither state’s provisions should be assumed to govern another venue. Illinois Racing Board guidance calls the superfecta “the Trifecta plus one” and directs bettors to the official program for designated races and detailed rules.
Before betting, confirm that the race offers a superfecta, the minimum denomination, the ticket’s total cost, and the applicable settlement rules. Treat the amount wagered as money at risk: neither a box nor a key ensures a winning ticket or profitable result.
