Supercell’s relationship with Space Ape progressed from backing the London game studio in 2017 to a reported $37 million follow-on investment in 2022, then to acquisition and integration as Supercell London. The $37 million figure describes the reported 2022 investment—not the later acquisition price. Supercell says its London studio opened in early 2025.

What the $37 million figure means
The $37 million figure belongs to the 2022 follow-on investment reported in a VentureBeat headline dated 7 July 2022 and listed in Supercell Investments’ news index. It should not be presented as the acquisition price: the cited material does not establish the amount Supercell paid to acquire Space Ape, or whether the acquisition involved a cash purchase on particular terms. Why open a London office?
Supercell’s stated description is that London is a studio for work on both new and existing games. Its careers page says teams collaborate across locations; Hay Day, for example, has a team spanning Helsinki and London. That supports a picture of a multi-location studio model, but the public descriptions do not spell out a specific financial rationale for opening the office or quantify its effect on game development. Supercell describes fewer than 80 people sharing one floor and characterizes the studio as “small enough that it still feels like a tiny startup tucked inside Supercell.” Both are company-authored descriptions; the headcount phrasing concerns the people sharing that floor, not necessarily every person working for Supercell in London. Is Space Ape still a separate studio?
Supercell’s portfolio says Space Ape was acquired in 2025 and joined forces as part of Supercell London. That points to integration under the London studio identity rather than continued presentation as a wholly independent company. John Earner, identified in his post as a Space Ape co-founder, described the public transition this way: “As of this morning, Space Ape Games is officially Supercell London. We’ll be shutting the office for a transformation—orange to black—before relaunching in March. And after 13 incredible years, I’ll be stepping away from the biz next week for a much-needed break.” Supercell portfolio · John Earner’s LinkedIn post
The change in studio identity does not by itself establish how every team, game, or business function was reorganized. Supercell’s London page does confirm that at least some work is shared across London and Helsinki.
