Avra Capital and existing investors Coatue, Felicis, and Y Combinator also participated. The company said the round brought its reported total funding to $196 million and described it as an up round; it did not disclose a valuation. The Series C was separate from Supabase’s earlier $80 million Series B in 2022.
This is a historical funding announcement, not Supabase’s latest financing. The company later announced a $100 million Series E in October 2025 and a $500 million Series F in June 2026. The details and valuation figures for those rounds are covered below.
What Supabase announced in its Series C
| Detail | Reported information |
|---|---|
| Announcement date | September 25, 2024 |
| Round and amount | Series C; $80 million |
| Lead investors | Peak XV Partners and Craft Ventures |
| Other named participants | Avra Capital, Coatue, Felicis, and Y Combinator |
| Total funding after the round | $196 million, as reported at the time |
| Valuation | Not disclosed |
| Round characterization | Supabase described it as an up round |
The $196 million figure is cumulative funding reported after the Series C, not the company’s valuation, revenue, or the amount raised in this round. Supabase’s September 2024 update and contemporaneous coverage reported the financing. The earlier $80 million Series B was announced in 2022, as described in Supabase’s Series B announcement.
What Supabase offers developers
Supabase is an open-source-oriented backend platform built around PostgreSQL. It combines a managed database with services commonly needed to build an application: automatically generated APIs, authentication and user management, file storage, realtime data features, Edge Functions, a dashboard, and developer tools. The company’s product philosophy is that a project is a full Postgres database, rather than a proprietary database presented as PostgreSQL-compatible; its Series A announcement explains that positioning.

That integration is the key to understanding the product. A team can use SQL and PostgreSQL tooling while relying on a single platform for several backend functions, instead of wiring together a database, identity provider, storage service, and API layer independently. Supabase also offers self-hosting options and open-source components, but those facts should not be read as meaning every hosted service has identical licensing, deployment, or maintenance terms.
Why investors may have backed a Postgres-centered platform
The Series C reinforced investor interest in PostgreSQL as a foundation for modern application development. Relational data, SQL, PostgreSQL extensions, and familiar tooling can suit teams that want more conventional database semantics than some backend-as-a-service products provide. Supabase also markets itself as an alternative to Firebase, although the two products are not interchangeable: they reflect different data models and ecosystems.

AI was part of the market context, not a proven sole cause of the financing. TechCrunch connected Supabase’s demand to the AI boom and noted the platform’s early support for the PostgreSQL pgvector extension, which can support vector-search workloads. That is relevant to applications using retrieval-augmented generation, but it does not make Supabase an AI-only product or establish that AI alone drove the round.
The financing gave Supabase additional capital to compete in developer infrastructure and build out its platform. Public coverage did not provide a detailed, quantified allocation plan for the $80 million. Product improvements, Postgres tooling, enterprise features, infrastructure capacity, integrations, and support for AI workloads are reasonable areas of strategic relevance, not confirmed line-item commitments for this round.

How Supabase compares with other backend choices
The practical choice is often between an integrated backend platform and a narrower database or application service. Supabase’s combination of PostgreSQL and application-facing services is useful when a team wants to assemble less infrastructure itself. Teams that already have those services, or need different database and application abstractions, may prefer another option.
| Option | Core distinction | More suitable when |
|---|---|---|
| Firebase | Google’s application ecosystem and historically NoSQL-centered database products; Supabase is SQL/Postgres-centered. | You want deep integration with Google’s mobile, analytics, identity, and cloud services. Supabase may suit better when direct PostgreSQL semantics and extensions matter. |
| Neon | A more database-focused serverless PostgreSQL product, rather than Supabase’s broader backend suite. | You need PostgreSQL and database-focused capabilities such as branching, and already operate your own Auth, storage, and API layers. Supabase is the closer fit for an integrated backend. |
| Appwrite | An open-source-oriented backend platform with database, authentication, storage, functions, and self-hosting ambitions; it is not simply another Postgres-first service. | You value a broad backend abstraction and self-hosting options. Supabase is more directly aligned with SQL-heavy applications centered on PostgreSQL. |
| Convex | An opinionated, reactive application-backend model rather than a general-purpose PostgreSQL platform. | You are building around Convex’s reactive programming model. Supabase is more suitable when conventional SQL access, relational tooling, or PostgreSQL compatibility is central. |
| Managed PostgreSQL, such as Amazon RDS, Aurora PostgreSQL, Google Cloud SQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL, or Crunchy Data | Database and infrastructure services, rather than a turnkey bundle of database plus application-facing backend services. | You need cloud, networking, compliance, or enterprise-infrastructure integration and are prepared to assemble more of the application stack yourself. |
Supabase’s case is strongest for developers who want PostgreSQL together with Auth, Storage, Realtime, APIs, and functions. It is less compelling for an organization that only needs a database and already operates a mature cloud-native backend. Neither a Postgres foundation nor an integrated platform automatically makes an application scalable: workload design, database connections, indexing, compute, caching, replication, and operations still matter.

What teams should weigh before choosing Supabase
Integration versus portability
Using PostgreSQL can make database data and many skills more portable than a proprietary data model. But a complete application may also depend on Supabase-specific APIs and services. Migrating can therefore involve more than exporting a database. Self-hosting may give a team more control, but it does not remove maintenance work or all platform-specific dependencies.
Operating responsibility
With hosted Supabase, the provider operates the service; with a self-managed deployment, the customer takes on responsibilities such as upgrades, backups, security, networking, scaling, and incident response. Enterprise buyers should verify compliance scope, support commitments, regional availability, contractual terms, and data-residency requirements directly with Supabase rather than assuming a funding announcement establishes them.

Scaling and service requirements
Production workloads may require deliberate choices around connection pooling, indexing, read replicas, caching, backup strategy, regional design, and observability. Supabase’s bundled services can reduce the number of components a team assembles, but they do not eliminate the need to plan for reliability and operations at scale.
Pricing and usage
Supabase’s pricing page lists Free at $0 per month, Pro from $25 per month, Team from $599 per month, and custom pricing for Enterprise. Those are starting plan prices, not a guaranteed total cost for a particular workload. Compute, storage, egress, backups, point-in-time recovery, log drains, project count, and other usage can affect the bill. The current plan terms and allowances are subject to change; check Supabase’s pricing page before budgeting. The Free plan’s listed projects can pause after a week of inactivity, which may not suit an always-on workload.
What happened after the Series C
Supabase’s later fundraising shows why the 2024 Series C should be treated as a milestone in a longer company trajectory, not a current valuation report.
- Series E, October 2025: Supabase announced $100 million at a $5 billion pre-money valuation, according to its Series E announcement.
- Series F, June 2026: Supabase announced $500 million. Its company blog stated a $10 billion pre-money valuation; a company press release described the post-money valuation as $10.5 billion.
Those later valuations belong to the 2025 and 2026 rounds. They do not establish a valuation for the Series C, which was not disclosed. Fundraising figures also do not by themselves demonstrate profitability, product-market fit, or the economics of any individual customer’s deployment.
