What the figures do—and do not—tell you
They are estimates, not confirmed individual pay
SalaryLeaks says it researches Premier League salary figures using club wage bills published in UEFA annual financial reports, reliable UK football publications, and contract details reported by tier-one journalists. It says a verified marker indicates salary details reported by trusted tier-one journalists and media outlets. That description is the publisher’s account of its method; it does not independently confirm every estimate in the table. SalaryLeaks’ methodology page explains the approach.

Sunderland Limited’s financial statements for the year ended July 31, 2025 report aggregate “Wages and salaries,” rather than named first-team player wages. Those accounts therefore cannot verify this individual ranking. Sunderland Limited’s filed accounts provide club-level financial information, not a player-by-player payroll.
Other lists can differ
SalarySport also lists Xhaka as Sunderland’s highest earner, but its page uses US dollars and reports a different squad size and total payroll. That is a directional cross-check, not a basis for combining its figures with the pound-denominated SalaryLeaks ranking. SalarySport’s Sunderland salary page should be read separately.

A separate article for 2025/26 citing Capology reported different values and ordering for several Sunderland players, and cautioned that only the club and players know their actual wages. It covers the previous season, so its estimates should not be substituted into a 2026/27 ranking. The Football Group’s 2025/26 salary article illustrates why source and season matter.

- Check the season and update date: this list reflects SalaryLeaks’ page updated September 13, 2026, for 2026/27.
- Check what the amount represents: the figures above are weekly base estimates; annual totals and bonuses are not included.
- Keep currencies and databases separate: a dollar-denominated estimate from another site is not directly interchangeable with a pound figure.
- Pay attention to ties: five players share the £45,000 cutoff, so “top 10” by rank contains 14 names here.
- Do not treat a club-wide wage bill as proof of an individual salary: published accounts report aggregates rather than named player pay.
SalaryLeaks also estimates Sunderland’s 2026/27 total wage bill, including bonuses, at £81.8 million. That is the site’s estimate, not a club-issued payroll figure.
