Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana Calculator: Could ₹1.5 Lakh a Year Grow to About ₹72 Lakh?

A ₹72 lakh SSY maturity figure is possible only as an assumption-led illustration. Learn which deposits, timing, rate and rules drive the estimate.

Depositing ₹1.5 lakh a year for 15 years could produce a maturity amount of about ₹72 lakh after 21 years if the account earned 8.2% throughout and deposits were made early enough each year. That is an illustrative estimate—not a guaranteed or government-certified payout. Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana (SSY) rates can change, and actual interest follows monthly balance rules.

What a Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana calculator should show

A useful SSY calculator needs more than a monthly or yearly contribution. Its result depends on the account’s opening date, how much is deposited, when deposits are made, how long contributions continue, and the interest-rate assumptions used.

  • Account opening date or the girl’s age: the account matures 21 years after it is opened.
  • Annual deposit: the scheme allows deposits from ₹250 to ₹1,50,000 per financial year.
  • Deposit timing: the date within the year affects the balance used to calculate interest.
  • Contribution duration: deposits may be made for up to 15 years from account opening.
  • Rate scenario: show whether the rate is a current published rate or a hypothetical rate held constant for the projection.

The calculator should report projected maturity value and total contributions separately. A single maturity figure without its assumptions can make a projection look like a promise.

How the ₹72 lakh illustration works

One plausible illustration assumes annual deposits of ₹1,50,000 for 15 years, made early enough in each year to earn the assumed interest, followed by no further deposits while the account continues to its 21-year maturity. If the rate is held at 8.2% for the full period, the result is about ₹72 lakh.

The 8.2% figure is the rate shown by the National Savings Institute for October–December 2026. The government sets SSY rates and can revise them, so applying 8.2% to every year of a 21-year projection is an assumption, not a forecast of future rates. The Press Information Bureau describes the rate as government-notified in its 21 January 2026 backgrounder; the National Savings Institute publishes the quarterly rate table.

Actual account interest is calculated monthly using the lowest balance between the close of the fifth day and the end of that month, then credited at the end of the financial year. A calculator based on a simplified annual-compounding formula is therefore an approximation of the account’s mechanics. The official scheme rules set the deposit, interest, and maturity conditions; they do not certify a universal ₹72 lakh payout. See the Sukanya Samriddhi Account Scheme, 2019.

Who can open an SSY account and how long it runs

A guardian opens and operates the account on behalf of an eligible girl child. Under the scheme rules, the beneficiary must be a resident Indian citizen when the account is opened and remain so until maturity or closure. The guardian operates the account until the holder turns 18; after that, the account holder operates it after submitting the required documents.

The account matures 21 years after its opening date. Contributions are allowed for up to 15 years from opening, subject to the ₹250 annual minimum and ₹1,50,000 annual maximum. Those limits and timelines are set out in the official scheme rules.

Can SSY money be withdrawn for education?

Education withdrawals are conditional, not unrestricted access to the account. A withdrawal of up to 50% of the balance at the end of the financial year preceding the withdrawal may be allowed once the holder turns 18 or passes tenth standard, whichever happens earlier. The rules require an admission offer or fee slip, and the withdrawal cannot exceed actual education expenses. Installments may be permitted under the scheme rules.

What can change the calculator result?

  • Future rate revisions: the 8.2% rate published for October–December 2026 does not establish the rate for later quarters or future years.
  • Deposit date: monthly interest depends on the lowest balance during the month, so depositing earlier can affect the interest earned compared with depositing later.
  • Contribution pattern: depositing less than the annual maximum, missing years, or contributing for fewer than 15 years changes the projection.
  • Calculation method: a simplified annual-compounding estimate will not exactly reproduce the scheme’s monthly balance and annual credit rules.
  • Purchasing power: a nominal rupee amount payable decades from now does not have the same purchasing power as the same amount today.

To compare scenarios fairly, keep the annual contribution and deposit timing the same while changing only the assumed rate. Label each rate as an assumption and distinguish the projected maturity amount from the total deposits.

Early closure is limited

The rules allow premature closure only in specified circumstances, including the account holder’s death and an intended marriage after age 18, subject to required evidence and timing. SSY should not be treated as an account with general early-withdrawal access; refer to the scheme rules for the applicable conditions.
