Sui Reports 40.6 Million TPS in Live Tunnel Test—Not on Its Mainnet

Sui Foundation reported 40.6 million transactions per second in a live test of offchain tunnels. The figure is not Sui mainnet TPS, and CertiK’s post-test report was still pending.

Sui Foundation says programmable Sui tunnels processed 40,614,180 transactions per second in a live demonstration at Sui Basecamp in Singapore on October 7, 2026. That is a reported peak for activity inside offchain tunnels—not a claim that Sui’s mainnet processed 40.6 million ordinary onchain transactions per second. Tunnel activity settles to the mainnet when tunnels close, and the post-test CertiK report was still pending when Sui announced the result.

What Sui’s 40.6 million TPS figure measures

The figure is Sui Foundation’s reported result for transactions processed within Sui tunnels during the October 7 demonstration. The foundation describes tunnels as programmable offchain state and payment channels. Activity can happen within a tunnel without each interaction being recorded as a separate mainnet transaction.

Sui says a tunnel uses two onchain transactions: one to open it and one to close it. The interactions between those steps occur offchain, with the tunnel’s state ultimately settled to Sui mainnet. The 40,614,180 TPS figure therefore describes tunnel-level activity, not the base layer’s conventional onchain throughput.

What happened in the live demonstration

The test took place on the Summit Stage at Sui Basecamp in Singapore, an event held alongside Token2049. Sui says attendees and online participants could follow the demonstration using a purpose-built explorer. It included tunnel activity involving chat, games, and payments, and the foundation said more than 10,000 tunnels opened on mainnet during the event.

Sui said the demonstration surpassed its 20 million TPS target. That target and the resulting throughput figure are claims in the foundation’s announcement, not independently established statistical estimates.

How the result compares with Sui’s earlier test

Sui compares the October demonstration with a July 4, 2026 tunnel result of 6,086,766 TPS. The foundation says both measurements concern activity inside Sui tunnels, so the comparison is meaningful only on that shared basis. It is not a comparison of mainnet TPS.

Demonstration Reported throughput Measurement context
July 4, 2026 6,086,766 TPS Sui tunnel activity, as reported by Sui Foundation
October 7, 2026 40,614,180 TPS Live Sui tunnel demonstration, as reported by Sui Foundation

Sui called the October result more than six times higher than the July figure. The figures alone do not establish how either result compares with another blockchain’s base-layer throughput; that would require comparable workloads and measurement methods.

What independent verification does—and does not—mean here

CertiK monitored the October attempt live, according to Sui Foundation. Live monitoring is distinct from completing a post-test audit: Sui said CertiK would examine proofs, execution logs, journals, and supporting evidence, then publish a report in the coming days. The announcement did not say that this examination or report was complete.

CertiK Director of Security Engineering Yuannan Yang said the objective basis for the results could help build trust in infrastructure for next-generation applications. That statement appeared in Sui Foundation’s announcement; it is not itself a technical finding or a substitute for the pending report.

What the result says about AI agents

The demonstration was framed around an “agentic economy,” with tunnel interactions spanning chat, games, and payments. Mysten Labs co-founder and Chief Product Officer Adeniyi Abiodun said Sui need not process every interaction itself, but should serve as the trust layer for them; he compared settlement to a court resolving disputes. Those are Abiodun’s views, quoted in the foundation’s announcement—not proof that every AI-agent application can use tunnels this way or that the test represents production conditions.

The practical distinction is architectural: frequent interactions can take place offchain, while the mainnet handles opening and closing tunnels and provides the settlement layer. The reported TPS figure demonstrates activity in that offchain system under the conditions of this event; it does not by itself establish typical performance, costs, or throughput for a live application.
