Its official overview describes projects including the Agni and Prithvi missile series, Tejas, Pinaka and Akash as successfully developed and produced. That wording reflects DRDO’s own account; it is not a comparative or independent assessment of cost, performance or operational results.
What counts as a successful DRDO project?
DRDO is the research and development wing of India’s Ministry of Defence. The organisation says its mission includes building self-reliance in critical defence technologies and systems. It was formed in 1958 by combining existing Army technical development and production bodies with the Defence Science Organisation. DRDO’s official overview provides this background and names systems it characterizes as successful indigenous development and production.
“Success” can refer to different milestones: completing design and development, passing a test, undergoing user evaluation, entering production, being inducted into service, or being operationally deployed. Those stages are not interchangeable. DRDO’s general overview supports its broad development-and-production characterization of the systems below, but it does not provide a complete status record for every variant or project.

Achievements beyond headline platforms
DRDO’s account also points to a broader technology base, including radars and electronic-warfare systems. These areas matter because a project record is not limited to aircraft and missiles. The cited overview, however, does not name individual radar or electronic-warfare systems in this passage, so it cannot support a system-by-system list or comparison.

Mission Divyastra: a test milestone, not proof of induction
DRDO’s homepage describes Mission Divyastra as the first flight test of an indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology. It reproduces Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s statement: “Proud of our DRDO scientists for Mission Divyastra, the first flight test of indigenously developed Agni-5 missile with Multiple Independently Targetable Re-entry Vehicle (MIRV) technology.” DRDO homepage
The wording establishes a first-flight-test milestone and the official description of the technology involved. A flight test announcement by itself does not establish service induction or operational deployment.

What DRDO’s historical project record says
DRDO’s publication listing for Endeavours in Self-Reliance: Defence Research (1983–2018) describes an account of hundreds of completed development projects and indigenous capabilities inducted into service. It also says that, over this historical scope, the annual budget grew from Rs. 300 crores to Rs. 17,000 crores and the financial value of indigenous production reached Rs. 300,000 crores. These figures and the qualitative count are claims in DRDO’s description of its own monograph, not independent statistical findings; the listing extract does not establish an exact publication year. - Identify the milestone. Distinguish development completion and production from a test, user evaluation, induction or operational deployment.
- Check the exact system and version. A general programme claim does not establish the status of every variant.
- Look for a dated, project-specific source. Broad organisational overviews may omit dates and current service status.
- Separate attribution from evaluation. An official announcement documents what DRDO says; it does not, on its own, provide an independent performance, cost or schedule comparison.
For example, DRDO’s newsletter archive includes a September 2026 entry announcing a maiden flight test for the Kusha long-range surface-to-air missile.
