The dispute is over the reliability of brand-level estimates in the Ninth Annual Swiss Watcher, published by Morgan Stanley Investment Management (MSIM) with Swiss consultancy LuxeConsult on February 18, 2026. Swatch Group challenged the report publicly nine days later, disputing its data, methods and claims about Swatch brands. The available public record establishes an exchange of letters, not a lawsuit or a definitive resolution.
What triggered the dispute?
The Swiss Watcher analyzes the Swiss watch market, including estimates of individual brands’ sales and performance. Swatch Group’s February 27, 2026 open letter objected to the report’s information sources and methodology, and argued that its estimates were presented with more precision than the underlying data could support. Swatch also said some descriptions of its brands’ performance were wrong.
Swatch’s letter warned that disputed statements about sales and profits could damage customer and retailer trust, and said legal action should be considered. That is Swatch’s stated position, not a court finding. Swatch’s investor page lists an MSIM answer dated March 5 and another Swatch letter dated March 9, 2026. The page verifies that correspondence timeline; it does not establish that a lawsuit was filed.
What figures are being contested?
The most useful way to read the figures is to distinguish Swatch Group’s reported results from the Swiss Watcher’s brand estimates and Swatch’s counterclaims. The latter two remain competing positions in the material available here, not independently settled brand-level facts.

| Issue | Swiss Watcher figure as described in coverage | Swatch Group’s response |
|---|---|---|
| Deviation in brand turnover | Swatch says the report’s estimates differ from its own brand turnover figures by an average of 24%, with individual deviations from −53% to +46%. | Swatch presents these figures as evidence that the estimates are unreliable. The comparison is Swatch’s claim; the reviewed coverage does not independently audit the underlying brand figures. |
| Tissot, 2025 sales development | The report estimated a 5% decline, according to Swatch’s letter and coverage. | Swatch says Tissot’s turnover grew by 3% in 2025. |
| Longines, 2025 profitability | The report characterized Longines as loss-making, according to Swatch’s account. | Swatch says Longines reported a 16.6% profit margin on net sales in 2025. |
Swatch Group separately reported 2025 net sales of CHF 6,280 million on its investor page. That is a group-wide figure, not a disclosure of sales for Tissot, Longines or every other individual brand.
Why are watch-brand estimates hard to verify?
Many Swiss watch brands are privately held. Even a publicly reporting group such as Swatch may not publish ordinary financial results broken down by individual brand. As a result, analysts cannot simply compare a complete set of audited brand accounts.

Coverage describes the Swiss Watcher’s approach as combining public information and export data with company statements, conversations and industry contacts, then using estimates to fill gaps. Such inputs can help analysts compare companies in a market with limited disclosure. But readers outside the process may not be able to reproduce a brand-by-brand number or assess how much weight each input received, particularly when a point estimate is presented precisely.
That opacity cuts both ways: estimates may be useful, but an interested company’s alternative figures are not automatically independently verified either. Swatch’s specific corrections should therefore be attributed to Swatch unless supported by separately disclosed, checkable brand-level data.

How should readers assess the claims?
- Identify the kind of figure. Swatch’s CHF 6,280 million figure is a published group result; brand-level Swiss Watcher numbers are estimates; Swatch’s disputed figures are company counterclaims.
- Ask what can be checked. A group result in official reporting is more directly verifiable than a brand estimate whose underlying inputs are not public. The report itself is described as intended for MSIM clients, and the reviewed public material does not provide its raw brand-level dataset.
- Keep attribution attached. The 24% average deviation, the Tissot growth figure and the Longines margin are Swatch’s claims. The reviewed reporting does not independently validate all of them.
- Do not treat the exchange as a verdict. The public record establishes criticism and subsequent correspondence, but it does not establish which disputed brand estimates are correct or confirm litigation.
What is established—and what remains unsettled?
The established public facts are that MSIM and LuxeConsult issued the Ninth Annual Swiss Watcher on February 18, 2026; Swatch challenged it in an open letter dated February 27; and Swatch’s investor page lists an MSIM response on March 5 and a further Swatch letter on March 9. Swatch also reported group net sales of CHF 6,280 million for 2025.
The accuracy of individual brand estimates, the full basis for Swatch’s brand-level comparisons, and the substance of the March 5 MSIM response are not established by these materials. The dispute is best understood as a disagreement about estimates in a market where brand-level disclosure is limited—not proof that either side’s figures are correct.
