Stuart and Molly Sloan’s $78 Million Gift to Fred Hutch: What It Funds—and What Changed

The Sloans’ 2022 $78 million pledge launched Fred Hutch’s Precision Oncology Institute. In 2025, Fred Hutch reported $100 million in total giving and a revised research-space strategy.

In September 2022, Stuart and Molly Sloan pledged $78 million to Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center to establish and support the Stuart and Molly Sloan Precision Oncology Institute. Fred Hutch called it the largest single gift in its 47-year history at the time. The institute’s planned research space has since changed: in July 2025, Fred Hutch said the Sloans’ total giving had reached $100 million and described an approach based on acquiring and partnering for existing space rather than building the originally proposed institute building.

What the $78 million pledge was intended to fund

Fred Hutch’s September 8, 2022, announcement said the pledge would create the Stuart and Molly Sloan Precision Oncology Institute and support its research programs. The stated uses included recruiting a scientific leader, establishing an endowed chair, providing postdoctoral fellowships, supporting sequencing projects, and making other program investments. The center described the pledge as the largest single gift in its 47-year history as of that announcement—not as a current ranking.

The announcement also described a new 390,000-square-foot building on the South Lake Union campus, to be named for the Sloans. That was the original plan; Fred Hutch later reported a different strategy for research space. Fred Hutch’s 2022 announcement

What precision oncology means at Fred Hutch

Precision oncology is not a single test or treatment. Fred Hutch describes it as connecting information about cancer biology and a person’s clinical situation to improve prevention, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment. Its scope includes genetics and genomics, metabolomics, the tumor microenvironment, environmental exposures, and theranostics—approaches that link therapy with diagnostic information.

Researchers may examine tumor sequencing, metabolism, expressed proteins, immune responses, and interactions with the microbiome, then interpret those findings alongside clinical data. The aim is to move beyond isolated discoveries toward a more connected understanding of cancer. Fred Hutch presents that integration of basic biology, technology, immunology, data science, and clinical experience as the institute’s rationale, not as evidence that the gift has already produced a particular patient outcome.

As donor Stuart Sloan put it in the 2022 announcement, “Precision oncology personalizes cancer treatments to each patient and their cancer.” The institute’s work also reaches upstream of treatment: its mission is to improve cancer outcomes through personalized prevention, early detection, and treatment at individual and community levels. How Fred Hutch describes the institute’s work today

The institute’s current initiatives connect research resources, clinical information, and community input. They include TakePART-NW, a biorepository and tissue donation program, molecular profiling and genomics, clinical data templates, research funding awards, and early detection and precision interception. The institute page says its Ignition and Technology Dissemination awards had funded ten projects to date as of October 4, 2026.

Peter Nelson, MD, is listed as vice president for precision oncology, institute director, and holder of the institute’s endowed chair. Eric Collisson, MD, is listed as director of translational integration. Fred Hutch also describes a Community Advisory Board that advises on initiatives, accessibility, and patient needs. Eligible members include current patients, cancer survivors, family members, and caregivers; the board meets three to four times annually, according to the institute page.

The institute’s ambition depends on joining research and care: Fred Hutch president and director Thomas J. Lynch Jr., MD, said, “You need both a research arm that will make the discoveries and a clinical arm that will test and deliver those discoveries.” The quote describes the institutional rationale for integration, not a measured outcome of the Sloan gift. What changed after the original announcement

On July 22, 2025, Fred Hutch reported that the Sloans’ total giving had increased to $100 million. The later announcement also updated the research-space plan. Instead of constructing the new institute building described in 2022, Fred Hutch said it had acquired 1165 Eastlake Avenue East and entered a joint venture with Alexandria Real Estate Equities, Inc., for properties at 1201 and 1208 Eastlake Avenue East.

The Sloan Clinic is part of the later recognition

The 2025 announcement said an outpatient complex serving more than 60,000 adult patients per year would be renamed the Sloan Clinic. Fred Hutch associated that naming with the Sloans’ increased total giving; it was not part of the original $78 million announcement in 2022. The patient-volume figure is the center’s description of the complex, not an independent measure of the gift’s impact.
