The right fit depends on the exact checkout product and payment methods you plan to offer, where your customers pay from, your average transaction size, and whether you also need a point-of-sale setup.
This comparison uses official U.S. pricing verified October 8, 2026. PayPal’s fee schedule says it was last updated October 1, 2026. Rates and features can change, and U.S. prices do not apply to accounts in other markets.
Stripe vs. PayPal fees: what the listed U.S. rates cover
Neither provider has one universal processing rate. Fees vary with the payment method, checkout product, transaction details, account market, and service configuration. The figures below describe specific U.S. flows, not equivalent charges for every transaction.
| Provider and payment flow | Listed U.S. fee | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Stripe: successful domestic online card transaction | 2.9% + $0.30 | Stripe lists separate charges for some manually entered cards, international cards, and currency conversion. Its schedules also differ for other payment methods and in-person Terminal transactions. Stripe pricing |
| PayPal: domestic PayPal Checkout | 3.49% + $0.49 | This is the PayPal Checkout flow, not the rate for every PayPal product. PayPal’s U.S. merchant fee schedule was last updated October 1, 2026. PayPal merchant fees |
| PayPal: standard domestic credit and debit card payments | 2.99% + $0.49 | This is a separate card-payment rate from PayPal Checkout; other payment types may have different rates. PayPal merchant fees |
These figures are not a like-for-like verdict. Stripe’s listed figure is for successful domestic online card transactions; PayPal publishes separate prices for PayPal Checkout and standard card payments. Compare the rate for the product flow you would actually enable, using each provider’s current Stripe fee schedule and PayPal fee schedule.

Why ticket size and payment mix matter
A percentage fee and a fixed per-transaction fee affect small and large orders differently. Your monthly estimate should use your expected transaction count and typical ticket size, then account for the share of card, wallet, or other payments you expect to accept. A headline rate alone cannot show which provider will cost less for your business.
International cards and currency conversion
For U.S. accounts, PayPal lists an additional 1.50% for international commercial transactions on top of the applicable domestic rate. Stripe lists separate charges for international cards and currency conversion. Those adjustments are distinct, so include the origin of buyers and the currencies you charge or settle in when modeling costs. PayPal merchant fees; Stripe pricing

The cited schedule is for U.S. accounts; it cannot establish pricing for a seller based elsewhere. Confirm the account market, supported buyer markets, settlement currencies, and local rates before choosing.
Checkout experience and payment options
Choose based on the checkout buyers need and the control your business requires—not only on the processor name. Stripe describes Checkout as a prebuilt payment form included in integrated pricing. PayPal presents multiple checkout options, with differences in payment methods, customization, statement presentation, risk handling, and charges. Stripe Checkout; PayPal checkout options

When PayPal-branded checkout may matter
If your customers expect to pay through PayPal, verify that the specific PayPal checkout product you plan to use supports that experience and the other payment methods you need. Do not assume that every PayPal checkout configuration has the same capabilities, fees, or buyer-facing presentation.
When integration control matters
Assess how much you need to customize the checkout, which payment methods must appear, and how the integration fits your website or commerce platform. Both companies offer distinct product paths; the available pricing pages do not establish which one will be easier to implement for a particular business. That depends on your platform, existing systems, and engineering capacity.

How to estimate your actual processing cost
- Define your payment mix. Estimate domestic and international transactions, average order value, transaction count, and the share of card, PayPal, wallet, or other payment types you expect.
- Match every payment to a product flow. Identify the Stripe or PayPal checkout and payment method you would actually enable; do not apply one provider’s headline rate to all transactions.
- Apply the relevant fees. Use the current official schedules for the account market and include any applicable international-card, currency-conversion, manually entered card, or other payment-method charges.
- Check the remaining operating costs and terms. Review current terms for refunds, disputes, and any other charges relevant to your business. The cited fee information does not provide a universal total-cost figure for every merchant.
- Compare the resulting monthly estimates. Use your own transaction assumptions for each provider, and revisit the estimates if your buyer locations, average order, or payment mix changes.
In-person payments, readers, and terminals
If you accept payments in person, online processing rates are only part of the decision. Stripe’s pricing page describes Terminal and card-reader hardware; PayPal’s business pricing page lists reader and terminal offerings. Compare card-present pricing, hardware purchase cost, device compatibility, and fit with your existing point-of-sale workflow. Stripe pricing; PayPal business fees and offerings
Check availability and compatibility for your location, devices, and point-of-sale software before buying hardware. The existence of a reader or terminal listing does not establish that a particular device will work with your setup.

Disputes, protections, and risk management
Review each product’s current dispute process, fees, eligibility rules, and protections for the transactions you expect to handle. PayPal’s checkout comparison describes seller protection as applying to eligible transactions; eligibility matters, so do not treat it as blanket coverage. PayPal checkout options
The cited materials do not provide an independent, like-for-like comparison of fraud or dispute outcomes for Stripe and PayPal. A stated protection or risk feature should not be read as proof that either provider will produce better results for your business.
Quick Recap
Which processor fits your business?
- Compare Stripe closely if its prebuilt Checkout or other integration path fits your platform and your expected payment mix. Evaluate its actual applicable rates, international and conversion charges, and Terminal options if you sell in person.
- Compare PayPal closely if buyers need PayPal-branded checkout or its specific payment options. Price the exact PayPal flow you plan to use, since PayPal Checkout and standard card payments have different listed U.S. rates.
- Evaluate both in detail if you sell across borders, take payments both online and in person, or need a customized checkout. The additional variables make a single headline-rate comparison especially incomplete.
- Choose based on implementation as well as price if one provider fits your existing platform, reporting, billing, reconciliation, or support needs better. Those operational trade-offs depend on your business systems and are not settled by the published rate pages.
