The answer is yes, but understanding the setup and the limits saves you from dead channels and lost revenue.
YouTube’s terms allow you to stream the same video continuously as a live stream. There’s no rule against repetition itself. What matters instead is that the broadcast is presented as a live stream with a real stream key, not as some kind of video player hack. The platform distinguishes between a video on demand (which has a different set of limitations) and a live broadcast running from a cloud backend. As long as the video plays through the live ingest protocol and appears in your channel’s live tab, YouTube treats it as legitimate streaming.
The catch is uptime and stability. A 24/7 stream that crashes every two hours trains your audience to stop checking. Every restart is a moment someone might leave and find something else. If the stream drops at 3am and nobody is awake to fix it, that’s hours of dead air in a slot where people might have been watching. Keeping a desktop machine powered on and running encoding software becomes expensive in electricity and equipment wear. The moment your computer needs a routine update, your stream goes dark.
This is where the infrastructure matters. Streaming the same video forever sounds simple until you’re the person responsible for keeping it running. The technical detail that often confuses creators is the difference between stream resolution and video resolution. When you upload a source file, you choose its bitrate and framerate once. YouTube handles the rest, including adaptive quality for different viewers. You don’t need to re-encode it for every resolution. Duration limits don’t apply to live streams the way they do to regular uploads. Monetization works on looping streams. If your channel is eligible for YouTube Partner Program, a looping stream can generate ad revenue just like any other broadcast. Super Chat and Super Thanks are available during live streams, so viewers can support you directly. The video content itself doesn’t need to be different from what you’d upload normally. A music loop, a nature ambient video, a talking-head recording, or a themed montage all work.
One nuance around content moderation: YouTube still applies its Community Guidelines to live stream content. The fact that it’s looping doesn’t exempt it. If the content would be flagged as a regular upload, it can be flagged as a live stream too. This applies to music licensing, copyright claims, explicit content, and misinformation. The looping format doesn’t change the review process.
The distinction between scheduled premieres and live streams matters here. A premiere is a one-time playback of a video where viewers watch it premiere together at a specific time. After it ends, it becomes a regular uploaded video. A true live stream, by contrast, is continuous. You can schedule it, but the underlying broadcast is persistent. Looping streams are live streams, not premieres. They stay in your channel’s live tab until you end the broadcast.

Many creators start with looping streams to test a channel concept before investing in live hosting or interactive broadcasts. A looping nature video or music stream is a low-risk way to see if there’s an audience for the niche. If viewers engage, you can add interactive elements or develop it into something more. If it doesn’t gain traction, you haven’t lost much beyond the video file upload and initial setup time.
The infrastructure question becomes real when you scale. A small hobby loop on a home internet connection with a desktop backup encoder might work for months. But if the stream grows to thousands of concurrent viewers, or if you’re running it 24/7 for months at a time, the risk of dropouts and the cost of hardware both increase. Setting up the stream itself takes minutes. You export your video file in a format YouTube accepts (MP4 with H.264 video codec and AAC audio is standard). You get your stream key from YouTube Studio. Then you configure the streaming software to loop the file and send it to YouTube’s ingest servers using that key. The software runs, loops the video continuously, and sends the bitstream to YouTube. Viewers see a live stream of the looping video in your channel’s live tab.

Storage considerations are minimal. A single video file, even if it’s hours long, takes gigabytes of space. You’re storing one file, not uploading a new copy every time it loops. The bandwidth is the stream bitrate multiplied by how long it broadcasts. A typical stream at 5 Mbps for 24 hours uses about 4.3 TB of outbound bandwidth. Cloud platforms manage this more efficiently than a home internet connection could, which is another reason the cloud approach scales better.
YouTube’s recommendation algorithm does surface live streams, including looping ones, but differently than it treats regular uploads. Live streams get visibility in the “live” section of the explore page and in notifications to subscribers. The algorithm doesn’t penalize a stream for looping, but it also doesn’t boost it beyond the normal live stream visibility. This is one area where interaction helps. If viewers are chatting, using Super Chat, or returning regularly, that signals to YouTube that the stream has an engaged audience.
