Strava Put Its 2025 Personalized Year in Sport Recap Behind a Paywall

Strava made its personalized 2025 Year in Sport recap subscriber-only. The U.S. annual individual plan was $79.99 plus tax, but the recap window has ended.

Strava made its personalized Your Year in Sport recap available only to subscribers in December 2025. In the United States, the annual individual plan was listed at $79.99 plus tax—about $80—but the recap was available only from December 8, 2025, through January 23, 2026. It is no longer available, so paying now will not unlock it.

What Strava put behind the paywall

The subscription requirement applied to the personalized Your Year in Sport recap: an in-app collection of cards built from an individual’s Strava activity, achievements, social interactions and selected statistics. It was not a charge to keep using Strava altogether. The company says recording and sharing activities, finding community and giving kudos remain free; its subscription includes additional analysis, insights and storytelling features. Strava’s current free-tier explanation is at Is Strava free?.

The change was a break with the previous year: Strava described its 2024 personalized recap as free in its 2024 Year in Sport announcement. The 2025 recap was not the same product as Strava’s public annual report.

Personal recap versus public trend report

Product What it contains 2025 access
Your Year in Sport A personalized recap based on a user’s own eligible Strava activity and interactions. Required an active subscription; available in the mobile app from December 8, 2025, through January 23, 2026.
Year in Sport: Trend Report Strava’s public report on broader trends in sports participation and activity. Released publicly on December 3, 2025; it was not the personalized recap paywall. See Strava’s 2025 report announcement.

What the U.S. subscription cost—and what that price means

Strava’s U.S. subscription page listed the individual annual plan at $79.99 plus tax. That is the basis for describing the recap as behind an “$80 paywall,” not a universal price for every country or billing method. The page displayed a $6.67 monthly equivalent for the annual plan; the U.S. App Store listing showed a separate $11.99 monthly in-app subscription. Prices can vary by location, tax, billing platform, offers and renewal status. See Strava’s subscription pricing FAQ and its pricing page.

The same U.S. pricing information listed a family plan at $139.99 annually for up to four accounts and a Strava + Runna bundle at $149.99 annually plus tax. Those options make sense only if multiple household members or both services’ features are useful; neither is a route to the expired recap.

Who could view the 2025 recap

Strava’s requirements were an active subscription, the latest version of its mobile app and at least three activities recorded on Strava during 2025. The recap was mobile-only, not available on Strava.com or desktop. Private and virtual activities from 2025 could count. The company’s Your Year in Sport help page also notes that the experience was personalized, so users did not necessarily see identical cards or statistics.

  • The recap covered 2025 activity, even when viewed in 2026.
  • New activities or kudos could take up to 24 hours to appear.
  • Profile totals could differ from recap totals if profile statistics were out of date.
  • Users could share individual scenes to Strava and other social or messaging apps, but Strava did not offer one export containing the full recap. Scenes had to be saved individually.

Meeting the subscription requirement alone was not enough: a user with fewer than three qualifying activities would still not meet the stated eligibility rules. The recap window ended January 23, 2026; Strava’s availability notice says the summary is unavailable.

Could a trial or monthly plan reduce the bill?

Strava’s subscription page advertised a 30-day trial for $0 for the individual plan. That offer was not guaranteed for every account: eligibility and how a subscription converts to paid service depend on account history and billing platform. The page said to cancel at least 24 hours before the trial ends to avoid a charge. Cancellation and refund handling can differ for subscriptions purchased directly, through Apple or through Google.

Blood oxygen, stress, mood, and sleep monitoring for better health insights. Women's health tracking for period and cycle management. Suitable for men and women ages 16+, beginner to advanced.

A monthly subscription could reduce the initial outlay compared with paying annually, but it would not necessarily cost less if kept for multiple months. Because the recap is now unavailable, starting a subscription today cannot restore the 2025 version.

Why Strava defended the change—and why users objected

Strava framed the subscription change as a distinction between free participation and paid interpretation of activity data. Its stated position was that recording, sharing and community functions remain accessible, while subscriptions support tools that help users track, assess and benchmark activity, including storytelling features such as Year in Sport. That is the company’s explanation, not independent evidence of the economics behind the decision.

Criticism reported by Ars Technica centered on the loss of a familiar free, shareable year-end feature. Some users saw the change as charging them to package activity data they had generated themselves. The annual price was especially salient for people who wanted a short-lived recap rather than year-round training tools. That reaction does not mean every user opposed the change, but it reflects the different value of a seasonal feature and an ongoing subscription.

Was paying for the recap worth it?

For a recap-only user, the annual fee was a difficult value proposition: the feature was seasonal, had a six-week access window, and is now expired. A subscription was more defensible for someone who would also use Strava’s other paid tools throughout the year, such as route planning, segment leaderboards, training analysis and longer-term progress insights. The practical question was whether those tools had value independent of the recap.

  • Want structured running coaching: Runna is a different product, built around training plans. Its official pricing page listed $119.99 annually or $19.99 monthly and advertised a seven-day trial; it may suit runners seeking coaching, but is not a substitute for Strava’s social feed or recap. See Runna’s pricing page.
  • Want both Strava’s paid features and Runna Premium: Strava listed its U.S. bundle at $149.99 annually plus tax. It is relevant only if both services meet separate needs; details are in the Strava + Runna subscription FAQ.

What to do now

The 2025 personalized recap cannot be recovered by subscribing after its availability window. Strava’s free tier remains an option for activity recording and sharing. If considering a paid plan for other features, check the current pricing and feature terms before enrolling; do not assume the next Year in Sport recap will have the same eligibility rules, dates or subscription requirement.

The broader consumer trade-off is straightforward: a personalized annual summary can be both a useful product feature and a highly shareable promotion for the platform. When access is restricted to an annual plan, the price should be judged against the whole year of tools—not just a recap that appears briefly.
