Stop & Shop is not announcing that its entire chain is shutting down. The major chain-wide action was a July 2024 plan to close 32 underperforming stores by the end of that year. Separately, July 2026 reporting identified two additional New Jersey closures—Westfield and Basking Ridge—with fall timing but no confirmed final trading dates in the available reports.
What Stop & Shop has actually announced
On July 12, 2024, Stop & Shop announced plans to close 32 underperforming stores by year-end. The company said the remaining footprint would be more than 350 stores across its five-state region. In that announcement, then-President Gordon Reid said: “As we announced in May, Stop & Shop has evaluated its overall store portfolio and made the difficult decision to close underperforming stores to create a healthy base for the future growth of our brand.” Ahold Delhaize newsroom, July 12, 2024
The 32-store figure belongs to that 2024 program; it should not be presented as a newly announced 2026 chain-wide round.
Which stores were reported to be closing in 2026?
NJBIZ reported in July 2026 that Stop & Shop planned to wind down its Westfield, New Jersey, store by early fall and confirmed a fall 2026 closure for its Basking Ridge location. After those two closures, the chain was expected to have 45 New Jersey locations, according to the report.

| Location | State | Timing reported | What is confirmed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Westfield | New Jersey | By early fall 2026 | Closure reported by NJBIZ; exact final trading day not established |
| Basking Ridge | New Jersey | Fall 2026 | Closure reported by NJBIZ; exact final trading day not established |
See NJBIZ’s July 22, 2026 report, updated July 24 for the location-specific reporting. The available sources do not provide a complete list of every Stop & Shop location that may close in 2026, so these two stores should not be treated as a chain-wide list.
Why are these stores closing?
For the 2024 portfolio action, Stop & Shop cited underperforming stores and the goal of creating a healthier base for future growth. For Basking Ridge, NJBIZ said the company described the decision as following a routine evaluation of store operations. That explanation is specific to the reported New Jersey decision and does not establish a broader forecast for the chain.

What the 2026 price cuts do—and do not—show
In a May 20, 2026 newsroom release, Ahold Delhaize said lower everyday prices had been implemented in more than 350 stores across the Northeast, including all 137 Stop & Shop stores in New York and New Jersey. That announcement concerns pricing investment in operating stores, not a closure count or a promise that no further closures will occur. Read the company release.
How to check whether your local store is affected
- Look for a notice posted at the individual supermarket or a dated message from Stop & Shop.
- Check the store’s current listing and contact the location directly before making a special trip.
- Treat “early fall” or “fall” as a planning window, not as a confirmed last day of trading.
- Confirm pharmacy, pickup, delivery and prescription-transfer arrangements separately if you use those services.
A store locator snapshot can continue to show a location before its planned seasonal shutdown, so the listing alone is not proof of a final operating date.

How to read future closure reports
Use four checks to avoid confusing old and new information:
Rank #4
- Stands Up & Stays Open: Making shopping so much easier! With a rigid box structure, our reusable bags are super easy to load & unload compared to ordinary floppy bags – Long handles let you carry tall items or sling a tote bag over your shoulder
- Extra Large so You can Carry More: A 3 pack of our large tote bags holds the same as 10 single-use grocery bags! Great for family sized trips to the supermarket, for carrying bulky items, and for organizing produce, meats, and grocery items
- Sturdy & Made to Last: Our super strong grocery tote bag maintains its shape like a box even when fully loaded with groceries or whatever you need to carry – Each sturdy utility tote is crafted from top quality materials for reliable use over and over
- Won't Fall Over in the Trunk: Best shopping bags for groceries! Design is spill proof so items stay put while driving – No more groceries rolling around in the trunk – Bananas, bread, produce and other soft items won't be damaged on your way home
- Easy to Clean: Simply use a damp cloth or sanitizer wipe to clean, then allow to air-dry – Our reusable grocery bags are foldable like a notebook when not in use – conveniently stores under your car seat, trunk, or a kitchen drawer
- Source date: a 2024 announcement is not a 2026 update.
- Geographic scope: the July 2026 statement about no other near-term closures applied to New Jersey at that time, not to Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island or New York.
- Specificity: a named store is stronger evidence than a general prediction.
- Date status: a season or estimate is not the same as a confirmed last trading day.
What this means for shoppers
The evidence supports a continuing Stop & Shop business with selected locations being removed from the portfolio—not a company-wide shutdown. If you shop at Westfield or Basking Ridge, plan for a possible fall 2026 change and verify the final date locally. Shoppers elsewhere should not assume their store is closing based only on the 32-store 2024 figure or the two New Jersey reports.
