Yes. The Stop Killing Games campaign passed one million signatures while collection was open in July 2025. After verification, the European Citizens’ Initiative it supported—officially called “Stop Destroying Videogames”—had 1,294,188 valid statements of support, with the required minimum reached in 24 EU Member States. The European Commission adopted its reply to the initiative on 16 June 2026; that procedural step does not, by itself, mean a new law was enacted.
What did the petition ask for?
“Stop Killing Games” is the campaign name. The formal European Citizens’ Initiative (ECI) is called “Stop Destroying Videogames.” Its organisers asked the European Commission to require publishers selling or licensing videogames in the EU to leave them in a functional state, preventing publishers from remotely disabling them. The Commission’s initiative record describes the request.

How many signatures did it get?
There are two relevant figures, because the campaign-period count and the verified total refer to different stages:
| Stage | Figure | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| During collection | More than 1.1 million by 4 July 2025 | A campaign update before collection closed on 31 July 2025, reported by the European Citizens’ Initiative Forum. |
| After verification | 1,294,188 valid statements of support | The European Commission’s final verified count, announced in January 2026. |
The July update showed that the campaign had passed its one-million target while signatures were still being collected. The later verified total is the figure to use when asking how many statements of support were accepted after review. The Commission also confirmed that the initiative reached the required minimums in 24 Member States. Its January 2026 announcement gives the verified result; the ECI Forum’s 4 July 2025 update reports the earlier campaign count.

What does reaching the ECI threshold mean?
An ECI lets EU citizens call on the European Commission to consider proposing new legislation. Reaching one million valid signatures, along with the required national minimums, means the initiative proceeds to examination and a Commission reply. It does not automatically create a law or require the Commission to adopt the organisers’ requested measure. The Commission explains the process on its European Citizens’ Initiative portal.

Organisers submitted the verified initiative to the Commission for examination on 26 January 2026. On 16 June 2026, the Commission announced that it had adopted its reply. The announcement confirms that procedural development and repeats the verified figures, but does not summarize the reply’s policy conclusions. The Commission’s June 2026 announcement is the cited source for adoption of the reply; it does not establish that a new law was enacted.
