Latest completed session: Thursday, 8 October 2026
Closing figures for the Indian benchmarks on 8 October, as reported by ET Now Digital, are shown below. These are closes, not live quotes.
| Benchmark | Close, 8 Oct 2026 | Change | Change (%) | Source and date |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Nifty 50 (NSE) | 22,231.80 | down 371.25 points | down 1.64% | ET Now Digital, 2026 report on the 8 October close |
| Sensex (BSE) | 71,593.24 | down 1,045 points | down 1.44% | ET Now Digital, 2026 report on the 8 October close |
The Nifty fell further in percentage terms than the Sensex on the same day. Because the two indices have different constituents and different point levels, the point moves should not be compared directly.
What moved the market, and what is only attributed
NDTV reported on 8 October 2026 that Brent crude rose 3.9% to an intraday high of $104.09 per barrel, which it linked to Middle East supply concerns. The same report said the Reserve Bank of India had shifted its policy stance from neutral to calibrated tightening the day before. Both points are the reporter’s account of the context. They are not established as the cause of the decline, and the market may have reacted to several factors at once.

How to read “today”, “live” and “close” labels
Index news is often mislabelled, so check each figure before you rely on it:
- Confirm the date and time, including the timezone (IST for Indian exchanges).
- Establish the session state: pre-open, trading, or closed. A figure stamped before the open is always a prior close.
- Label each number as either “live, as of [time] IST” or “close, [date]”. Do not present a previous close as a live quote.
- Before quoting a percentage move, confirm the base: the change is measured against the prior session’s close.
Sensex and Nifty: what each benchmark measures
The two indices are separate benchmarks. The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) describes them in its investor-education material as follows.
Rank #2
- Comes with secure packaging
- Easy to read text
- It can be a gift option
| Feature | S&P BSE Sensex | NSE Nifty 50 |
|---|---|---|
| Exchange or provider | BSE (S&P BSE index) | National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) |
| Number of constituents | 30 | 50 |
| Constituent description (per SEBI) | 30 large, well-known companies from different sectors | 50 of the largest and most frequently traded companies listed on NSE |
| Point level comparable to the other? | No. Point levels reflect each index’s own methodology and should not be compared directly. | No. Same caution applies. |
A higher point number does not mean one index has performed better. Compare percentage moves over the same session window instead.
Checking live levels on the exchange
For current prices, use the official NSE live equity page for the index or stock you follow. It displays the fields readers typically need: open, high, low, previous close, last traded price (LTP), change, percentage change, volume, value, and the 52-week range. At the time of preparing this article, the NSE live page loaded without populated values, so no 9 October live levels are given here. Retry the official page once the session is open, and record the time you checked.

- Date, time, timezone and session state (pre-open, trading or closed).
- Sensex and Nifty levels with point and percentage changes, labelled as live or prior close.
- Market breadth (advances, declines, unchanged) and sector moves, only when sourced to a current exchange figure or a dated report.
- Company or macro news with clear attribution. Separate what a source reported from what is established as cause.
- A pointer to official exchange data for verification.
Reading index moves safely
An index is a market gauge, not a guarantee. SEBI states in its investor-education page on the Sensex and Nifty: “It is important to note that securities market indices are not a guarantee of future performance.” SEBI also notes that index values can fluctuate substantially over a short period and advises consulting securities-market professionals or doing your own research before making investment decisions.
Be cautious of unsolicited stock tips and trading-app or social-media offers. NSE warns investors against unsolicited tips and fake social-media trading schemes, and SEBI’s investor site lists fake trading apps, stock-guru frauds and pump-and-dump scams. A market recap describes what happened; it is not a recommendation to buy or sell any security.
