Brent crude rose above $104 a barrel, Treasury yields reversed lower after an early climb, and losses in large AI-linked technology stocks weighed on the S&P 500 and Nasdaq.
How did the stock market do today?
At the October 8 close, the S&P 500 fell 0.5% to 7,765.36, its second consecutive loss after recently setting an all-time high. The Nasdaq Composite dropped 1.3% to 27,193.34. The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 0.1% to 51,231.64, and the Russell 2000 gained less than 0.1% to 2,794.13, according to the Associated Press.
| Index | October 8 change | Closing level |
|---|---|---|
| S&P 500 | Down 0.5% | 7,765.36 |
| Dow Jones Industrial Average | Up 0.1% | 51,231.64 |
| Nasdaq Composite | Down 1.3% | 27,193.34 |
| Russell 2000 | Up less than 0.1% | 2,794.13 |
The headline indexes did not tell the whole story of the session. The AP reported that about two out of every three S&P 500 stocks rose, but declines in technology companies outweighed those gains in the capitalization-weighted index. A small number of very large companies can therefore pull a broad index lower even when more of its constituents advance.
Why oil and Treasury yields were in focus
Brent crude climbed amid supply uncertainty
Brent crude rose 4.1% to $104.28 a barrel, after reaching nearly $106 in the morning, the AP reported. It had traded from $96 to nearly $110 during the prior month as uncertainty over when the Iran conflict would allow the global energy industry to return to normal unsettled oil markets. That is the contemporaneous context reported alongside the price move, not proof that any single factor caused the day’s rise.

Yields rose early, then retreated
The 10-year Treasury yield began the reported sequence at 5.28% late Wednesday, climbed to 5.35% early Thursday and then fell to 5.23%, according to the AP. The 30-year yield declined to 5.60% from 5.73% after the Treasury sold $22 billion in 30-year bonds at a high yield below 5.62%.
A separate Reuters morning report carried by Fidelity put the 10-year yield at 5.29%, close to its highest level since 2002. That earlier snapshot differs from the AP’s later 5.23% reading because it reflects a different point in the session. Reuters described oil and yields as adding to inflation concerns ahead of earnings season.

Tony Miano, global investment strategy analyst at Wells Fargo Investment Institute, told the AP: “Higher U.S. Treasury yields are starting to create their own demand, buyers are showing up for the right price.”

Several large semiconductor and AI-linked names fell, adding pressure to the technology-heavy Nasdaq and the S&P 500. The AP reported that Nvidia dropped 2.9% and was the S&P 500’s largest drag by points because it was the index’s largest company by market value. Broadcom lost 4.3%, Micron Technology fell 4.8%, and U.S.-traded shares of Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) declined 3%.
TSMC’s September growth indicated quarterly revenue could exceed analyst expectations, according to the AP, yet its U.S.-traded shares still fell. The AP framed the broader pressure as a test of whether AI companies can deliver growth commensurate with the strong share-price gains of recent years; that is an interpretation of market expectations, not a demonstrated conclusion about any one company’s valuation.

What the session does—and does not—show
- The indexes were mixed. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq finished lower, while the Dow and Russell 2000 were modestly higher.
- Market breadth was stronger than the headline S&P 500 result. Most S&P 500 constituents rose, but losses among large technology companies had outsized index impact.
- Oil and yields were volatile rather than moving in one direction all day. Brent rose, while Treasury yields that had climbed early later retreated.
- One session is not a forecast. These closing figures describe October 8, 2026, and should not be read as a current market update or as evidence of what stocks, oil, or yields will do next.
