The latest confirmed session was Tuesday, October 6: the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq all rose, while the Russell 2000 fell. These are prior-session closes, not live October 7 prices.
What did the stock market do?
On Tuesday, October 6, the S&P 500 closed at 7,818.93, up 44.98 points, or 0.6%. The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished at 51,521.28, up 253.38 points, or 0.5%, and the Nasdaq Composite closed at 27,599.79, up 122.48 points, or 0.4%. The Russell 2000 moved the other way, falling 16.84 points, or 0.6%, to 2,830.30. Associated Press, October 6, 2026.
The S&P 500 ended at a record. AP also reported that the Nasdaq added to its record. Associated Press, October 6, 2026. The figures describe the completed Tuesday session; they do not establish how U.S. stocks opened Wednesday.
Is the Dow opening lower on October 7?
That claim is not verified by the available timestamped information. The research timestamp is 03:41 UTC on October 7, before the U.S. cash-market open, and the latest confirmed U.S. session in the sources is October 6. A headline describing the Dow as opening lower should therefore not be treated as a confirmed October 7 market result without a later, timestamped quote.

A Bloomberg-derived overnight outlook carried by HeadlinesBriefing said U.S. futures pointed to the possibility of further gains after Tuesday’s records, while elevated oil and interest rates remained risks. It also summarized Tuesday’s lower dollar gauge and a retreat in the 10-year Treasury yield from a high. This is secondary, overnight context—not a verified opening quote or a live October 7 reading. Why did stocks rise on October 6?
AP described easing bond yields and investor expectations that companies would keep increasing profits as context for Tuesday’s record-setting market. Those are reported factors, not proof that either one alone caused the gains. AP’s October 6 closing report and record-market report.

Its market figures were an earlier-session snapshot, so they should not be read as current October 7 prices. Charles Schwab, October 6, 2026.

Nor does a lower Dow by itself demonstrate a broad flight to safety. To assess whether investors are broadly turning defensive, compare timestamped moves across major stock indexes, Treasury yields, the dollar and gold. The October 6 record gains in the Dow, S&P 500 and Nasdaq alongside a decline in the Russell 2000 show mixed participation, but do not establish safe-haven flows on October 7.
