But those terms alone cannot explain why a particular cardholder switched—or prove that switching will improve your rewards. Compare the current terms with your own spending and confirm what Chase will allow on your account before changing anything.
What Freedom Flex offers as of October 7, 2026
Chase lists no annual fee for Freedom Flex. Its current rewards include 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined purchases in activated quarterly bonus categories, 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel, 3% on dining—including takeout and eligible delivery—and drugstore purchases, and 1% on other purchases. These are issuer terms, not a promise of a particular cardholder’s savings. See Chase’s Freedom Flex terms.
For the fourth quarter of 2026, Chase announced 5% on grocery store purchases (excluding Walmart and Target), dining, and eligible donations to the American Red Cross, subject to a combined $1,500 quarterly spending cap after activation. The activation deadline is December 14, 2026. These categories apply to October through December 2026; check the current terms for later quarters. Chase’s Q4 2026 announcement provides the dated category details.
Chase also announced travel-related changes on September 21, 2026, including no foreign transaction fees and Points Boost offers on select hotels booked through Chase Travel. Chase says points can be worth up to 10% more on select bookings. That is a limited offer, not a blanket increase in the value of every point redemption; check the operative offer terms before booking. Read Chase’s travel announcement.

Does Freedom Flex still have rotating 5% categories?
Yes. Freedom Flex has quarterly bonus categories, and cardholders must activate them to earn the bonus. The 5% rate applies to up to $1,500 in combined eligible purchases across the activated categories during the quarter—not $1,500 for each category. Purchases beyond the combined cap earn according to the applicable terms.
Activation is only one condition. A purchase must also qualify under the program rules, and the merchant’s transaction coding can affect the result. A business or payment method that appears to fit a category may not receive its bonus. Review the Freedom Flex rewards agreement and track eligible spending if you plan around the quarterly cap.

How the original Freedom and Freedom Flex compare
Both cards use rotating quarterly categories, activation, and transaction-qualification rules, as reflected in their separate rewards agreements. The available terms do not establish every difference across account vintages or what product-change options a particular account has. Ask Chase about your specific account before making a change.
| Decision factor | What to check |
|---|---|
| Quarterly categories | Compare the categories with where you actually spend, and check whether you are willing to activate them each quarter. Flex’s announced Q4 2026 categories are groceries excluding Walmart and Target, dining, and eligible American Red Cross donations. Chase’s Q4 announcement. |
| Quarterly cap | Flex’s current terms cap the 5% quarterly-category rate at $1,500 in combined eligible purchases after activation. Verify the applicable terms for your account and quarter. Chase Freedom Flex terms. |
| Year-round earning | Flex lists 3% on dining and drugstores, 5% on travel booked through Chase Travel, and 1% on other purchases. Compare those categories with your spending and the original card’s terms for your account. Chase Freedom Flex terms. |
| Annual fee and account pricing | Chase lists a $0 annual fee for Flex. Check your account’s own pricing and any terms that would change if you switch. Chase Freedom Flex terms. |
| Benefits you will use | Consider whether the announced travel features matter to you, and confirm current eligibility and booking terms. Chase describes Points Boost for select hotel bookings, not all redemptions. Chase’s travel announcement. |
The original Freedom and Freedom Flex have separate rewards agreements: original Freedom agreement and Freedom Flex agreement. Read the terms relevant to your card rather than assuming that a product change carries every feature or condition over unchanged.

How to decide whether a switch fits your situation
- Review your spending. Look at recent statements and identify how much you spend in categories Flex rewards year-round and in quarterly categories you are likely to use.
- Account for the activation and cap. Decide whether you will activate each quarter and monitor eligible purchases against the combined $1,500 quarterly cap.
- Check how your merchants qualify. Category rewards depend on the terms and transaction coding; do not assume a purchase qualifies based only on the merchant’s name or what you bought.
- Compare benefits and costs. Weigh the $0 annual fee Chase lists for Flex against the account terms that apply to you, plus any travel or other features you would actually use.
- Ask Chase about your account before changing it. Confirm available product-change options and the consequences for your specific account. The published agreements do not settle eligibility or outcomes for every cardholder.
Without your spending figures and verified account terms, a personalized break-even calculation would be guesswork. Treat any rewards estimate as an estimate based on eligible purchases, not a guaranteed return.
Why this article cannot claim “I switched because…”
The title’s first-person framing requires the cardholder’s actual reason, spending pattern, and outcome. Those details are not established here, so it would be misleading to invent a personal switching story. The practical case for considering Flex is its published terms; whether those terms justify a change depends on your own use and the options Chase confirms for your account.
