Why the 2009 estimate was lower
The Los Angeles Business Journal ranked Stephen Bing 46th among wealthy Angelenos in 2009 and estimated his net worth at $590 million, down 41% from its $1 billion estimate on the prior year’s list. The publication attributed his wealth to inheritance and cited falling real-estate values as the reason for the write-down. This is a dated published estimate, not a verified valuation of what he retained later.
How much was Steve Bing worth when he died?
A 2020 Town & Country report said about $300,000 remained in liquid assets when Bing died, before debts were settled. Liquid assets are cash or assets readily convertible to cash; the reported amount does not describe a complete estate balance sheet. It therefore should not be presented as proof that Bing’s total net worth was $300,000.
Where his wealth came from
The Los Angeles Times reported that Bing inherited a $600 million fortune from his grandfather, Leo Bing, at age 18.
