How to choose games that are worth buying
Start with games you intend to play
Make a wishlist or shortlist around your preferred genres and the features you need: single-player or multiplayer, co-op, controller support, operating system, and any other practical requirements. Use the game’s listing to verify those details rather than inferring compatibility from the sale page.
Judge the price, not just the discount
Compare the current price in your region and currency with your budget. A percentage discount by itself does not show whether a game is a good fit or a good use of your money. If you want to claim a title is at a historical low or its best-ever price, verify that separately with a price-history source; a live sale label alone does not establish it.

Read reviews in context
Check both the Steam review rating and the number of reviews, along with the checked date. Then look for comments relevant to your intended use—such as solo play, online activity, performance, or controls. A rating is a useful signal, not a substitute for knowing whether the game suits you.

Before buying a bundle, compare its contents and price with the specific game or DLC you want, and account for items you already own. Confirm whether an expansion requires the base game. Buy for your play plans, not fear of missing out
If you are unlikely to play a game soon, it may be reasonable to wait rather than spend now. Another sale may provide an opportunity later, but its timing and price are not guaranteed. PC Gamer discusses this as a buying consideration, not a promise of a future discount.
How to narrow Steam’s large sale catalog
Filters help turn a huge store into a shortlist: narrow by genre, features, release date, rating, and review count, then inspect promising listings individually. PC Gamer reported that SteamDB counted 44,048 games under $5 in the Steam Autumn Sale on October 1, 2026. That is a dated third-party count for the Autumn Sale, not a Winter Sale forecast or an official Valve statistic. Its Autumn Sale report describes using filters to narrow the options.

A practical checklist for each deal
- Open the live Steam listing and note the price and currency for your region.
- Check the discount and any displayed end time on that listing.
- Confirm whether you are buying a base game, bundle, or DLC, and whether you need another item first.
- Review the game’s genre, features, rating, and review count as displayed on the day you check.
- Verify operating-system, controller, and Steam Deck details on a current listing or reliable current source before relying on compatibility.
- Decide whether the game fits your budget and whether you are likely to play it soon.
Valve also explains that discounted games may appear in store specials through tags, popularity, and recommendation, and that wishlisting can help surface notifications for qualifying discounts. These tools can help you discover offers, but they do not guarantee a discount on a specific game.
