Steam Machine Delay: What the RAM Shortage Means for Its Price

Valve cited worsening memory and storage shortages when it revisited Steam Machine timing and pricing. Later reporting put launch prices at $1,049 for 512GB and $1,349 for 2TB, but does not establish current stock or another price rise.

Valve’s February 2026 update tied the Steam Machine’s schedule and pricing review to worsening memory and storage shortages. By June, Ars Technica reported a June 29 shipping start and launch prices of $1,049 for the 512GB model and $1,349 for 2TB. Those are high announced prices, but the available reports do not establish that Valve has announced another increase—or what the machine currently costs or whether it is in stock.

Why Valve said the Steam Machine was delayed

On February 5, 2026, Valve said shortages of memory and storage had “rapidly increased” and that limited availability and rising component prices meant it needed to revisit the exact shipping schedule and pricing. Valve still described shipping the Steam Machine and two other products in the first half of 2026 as its goal at that point. TechRadar reported Valve’s February statement.

That was a change from the earlier “early 2026” framing, but Valve’s February comments did not provide a revised date or a final price. The reason it gave was component availability and cost—not a disclosed change to the machine’s specifications.

What the reported launch prices were

On June 22, Ars Technica reported that Valve had announced shipping would begin June 29 through a reservation-based allocation process. Its report listed these launch prices:

  • Wi-Fi 6E
  • 50Whr battery; 3-12 hours of gameplay (content-dependent)
  • Carrying case with removable liner
Reported configuration Reported price What differs
512GB $1,049 Lower storage capacity
2TB $1,349 More storage capacity
Optional Steam Controller bundle +$79 Accessory add-on, as reported

These figures are Ars Technica’s June 22, 2026 report of the announced launch offer, not confirmation of a current retail price or current stock. Valve’s Steam Machine product page identifies 512GB and 2TB options, but its contents can change.

The $300 difference between the two reported configurations buys additional storage on the information available here. The cited reports do not establish that the 2TB model performs better in games; there are no comparative benchmark results in these sources.

GMKtec K12 Gaming Mini PC Oculink AMD Ryzen 7 H 255 (Upgraded 8745HS) 32GB DDR5 RAM 512GB SSD, Desktop Computer Radeon 780M Graphics, 3X M.2 2280 Storage Expansion, Dual NIC 2.5G, HDMI 2.1, USB4
  • RYZEN 7 H 255 CPU - The Ryzen 7 H 255 is a chip from the Hawk Point family and is an upgraded version of the older Ryzen 7 8745H and has 8 cores (16 threads thanks to SMT support) that run at up to 4.9 GHz, together with the powerful Radeon 780M iGPU. Unlike Zen 3, Zen 4 offers AVX512 support along with other improvements such as larger caches/registers/buffers across the board.
  • GAMING PC - The Radeon 780M (12 CUs / 768 shaders, up to 2,600 MHz) can drive multiple displays simultaneously with a resolution of up to 8K. Hardware encoding and hardware decoding of the most common video codecs (AV1, AVC, HEVC) is also no problem; playing the latest games on FSR settings without issues.
  • WHY CHOOSE DDR5 5600MHz DUAL CHANNEL (2×16GB): With a 5600MHz clock—a 17% frequency uplift over 4800MHz—this kit delivers massive bandwidth gains that elevate real-world performance. Gamers enjoy higher minimum FPS and less stutter in open-world and sim titles for a smoother competitive experience. Video editors and 3D creators benefit from faster 4K/8K timeline scrubbing, quicker renders in DaVinci Resolve and Premiere, and swifter asset loading. For AI/LLM workloads, the superior throughput reduces I/O bottlenecks, cuts token generation latency, and accelerates model fine-tuning by keeping processing cores fed with data—so you wait less and create more.
  • 32GB DDR5 RAM + 512GB SSD - The K12 mini computer is equipped with Dual 16GB (Total 32GB) SO-DIMM DDR5 5600MHz memory sticks. 512GB PCIE 4.0 SSD Drive with 3x M.2 2280 Expansion slots. Each slot capable of reading up to 8TB. (24TB MAX)
  • QUAD SCREEN 4K DISPLAY SUPPORT - K12 Mini PC support 4-screen 4K/8K output via HDMI 2.1 (8K@60Hz), DisplayPort 1.4 (4K@60Hz), and USB Type-C Transfer speed (supporting PD3.0/DP1.4/DATA). Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Did the RAM shortage make it more expensive?

The shortage clearly affected Valve’s pricing review: in February, Valve explicitly connected limited component availability and higher prices with the need to revisit Steam Machine pricing. The later reported prices show where the launch announcement landed, but they do not reveal what Valve’s original target price was or how much of the final price was caused by memory costs. There is no basis in these reports to calculate a shortage-driven price increase or claim Valve has announced another one.

What Valve engineers said about supply afterward

Supply concerns did not disappear immediately after the shipping announcement. In a July 18 report, PC Gamer quoted Valve engineer Yazan Aldehayyat saying retail memory availability lagged bulk supply by “at least three to six months.” That is his observation, not a market-wide measured statistic. Valve engineer Pierre-Loup Griffais said the Steam Machine’s production was limited by memory capacity. PC Gamer reported the comments.

What the reported hardware tells you—and what it doesn’t

Ars Technica reported a six-core AMD Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 graphics with 8GB of dedicated GDDR6 VRAM, 16GB of DDR5 system memory, and SteamOS. That gives useful context for what Valve’s compact living-room PC includes, but specifications alone cannot show how it performs against competing PCs or whether either configuration is good value. The cited coverage contains no hands-on results or benchmark comparisons.

For a personal-budget decision, treat the reported launch price as a substantial upfront hardware purchase, not as a complete measure of value. The reports here do not supply comparable prices and test results for a competing system, so a firm value verdict would require a like-for-like comparison rather than assumptions based on the RAM shortage alone.
