The company said it planned to use the money for marketing, industry partnerships, and hiring. Today, StartPlaying describes itself as an online marketplace where players can find tabletop roleplaying games and Game Masters (GMs); prices are set by each GM, with a separate service fee shown at checkout.
What the $6.5 million raise covered
GamesBeat reported that the May 2022 round was led by Andreessen Horowitz general partners Jonathan Lai and Andrew Chen. StartPlaying CEO Nate Tucker said the company intended to scale marketing, broaden industry partnerships, and hire. Its stated goal at the time was to double the team by the end of 2022; that was a plan, not a current staffing figure. Tucker said, “We’re investing in putting together a world-class team.” (GamesBeat, May 13, 2022)
The funding report also described the company’s activity at that time: since its September 2020 founding, StartPlaying said it had hosted more than 100,000 games with more than 1,000 professional GMs, who had earned $2.5 million. The company also said almost half of new users had never played before. These are historical company figures reported in 2022, not current totals or independently audited results.
In a later retrospective, StartPlaying said that by December 2023 GMs had earned more than $17 million and more than 50,000 players had found games through the platform. The company also reported GM earnings of more than $1 million in its first year and more than $4 million in its second. These figures are StartPlaying’s own, tied to the periods it specified. How StartPlaying connects players and GMs
StartPlaying’s current marketplace is for online tabletop RPG sessions. Its homepage highlights games including Dungeons & Dragons and Pathfinder, and says players can browse different styles of play and virtual tabletops. The site also advertises team events. (StartPlaying)
A GM creates a listing with details such as the game system, schedule, price, and format. Players can join a public game alone, reserve multiple seats for a group, contact a GM, or ask StartPlaying support to help match a group with a GM. Some GMs conduct interviews or session zero meetings, but those practices are not guaranteed for every listing. (StartPlaying player guide)

StartPlaying’s May 2026 GM-search guide describes filters for game system, per-player budget, timezone, language, virtual tabletop or video tools, and qualities praised in player reviews. It also says some listings allow instant booking and many accept individual players. New players can look for GMs rated as teachers. Treat these as discovery options, not promises about a particular game; check the listing for its requirements and format. (StartPlaying Help Center, May 2026)
What a session costs and when you pay
Each GM sets their own price. StartPlaying’s Help Center stated on March 24, 2026 that its average game price was $15–$20 per session. That is a platform-reported average, not a guaranteed rate, and it does not include the additional service fee shown at checkout. A one-shot price covers one meeting; a campaign price applies each time the group meets. (StartPlaying Help Center, March 24, 2026)

StartPlaying’s Help Center stated on June 3, 2026 that the platform takes a 15% cut of game bookings from GMs. Payments are handled on the site through Stripe, and the company says players are charged one hour after a game starts. Its published policy permits players to leave or skip without charge if they do so at least 24 hours before the scheduled start time. The terms prohibit paying for a game through third-party apps. Check the live terms and listing before booking, since fees and rules can change. (StartPlaying Help Center, June 3, 2026)
The checkout page displays the service fee before confirmation. StartPlaying says it covers card-processing costs and that the fee is refunded with the session cost if a refund is granted. Refund requests go through StartPlaying support and may involve checking the situation with the GM; a request is not a guarantee of a refund. (StartPlaying Help Center; StartPlaying player guide)

How to compare listings before you book
Use the listing details to judge whether a game fits your budget, schedule, experience level, and preferred way to play. A practical comparison includes:
- Game and style: system, genre, and whether the GM’s approach matches the kind of play you want.
- Commitment: one-shot or recurring campaign, session length, scheduled time, and timezone.
- Total cost: per-player price for each meeting, plus the service fee shown at checkout.
- GM fit: experience, player reviews, teaching strengths, and whether the listing welcomes beginners.
- Tools and access: virtual tabletop or video platform, language, and any accessibility preferences or requirements stated in the listing.
- Group setup: whether individual players can join, how many seats are open, or whether the GM can run a private group.
For someone new to tabletop RPGs, a listing that welcomes beginners and a GM praised for teaching may make it easier to get started. For an established group, compare private-game availability and the GM’s preferred system and tools. The platform’s filters can narrow the options, but the listing itself determines the session’s terms.
