Groundwork BioAg makes Rootella, a line of agricultural mycorrhizal inoculants, and is developing Rootella Carbon, a program intended to connect product use with soil-carbon measurement and potential credit revenue for farmers. Its business combines an agricultural input with a carbon-program model; the company’s performance figures are claims, not guaranteed outcomes, and individual growers’ economics depend on program terms that are not stated publicly here.
What does Groundwork BioAg do?
Groundwork BioAg sells agricultural products built around mycorrhizal fungi: fungi that form relationships with plant roots. The company describes its Rootella products as concentrated inoculants designed to fit existing cultivation protocols. This is a commercial-agriculture product line, not necessarily a home-gardening product or a substitute for consumer-market inoculants.
The commercial rationale is that supporting fungal networks around roots may help plants access nutrients and water. Groundwork and investor BASF Venture Capital describe intended benefits that include phosphorus uptake, water utilization, crop performance, and resilience to stresses such as drought. Those are intended or claimed effects, not universal independently verified results. The appropriate formulation, application rate, and method depend on the product label and crop.
What is Rootella, and what claims does Groundwork make?
Rootella is the company’s line of mycorrhizal inoculants. Groundwork’s homepage presents the following figures as headline claims; they should not be read as a promise for a particular farm, crop, or season.
#1 Best Overall
- BIGGER ROOTS IN 150 PLANTS OR MORE – PureMyco's 10-strain biological consortium — 4 endomycorrhizal species, 3 ectomycorrhizal species, beneficial PGPR organisms, and additional root zone organisms — delivers a guaranteed ≥1,000 propagules per gram. More strains, more coverage, effective as a root powder for plants across any grow method.
- STRONGER ROOTS FROM DAY ONE – Works as a powerful root stimulator for plants by dramatically expanding root surface area, allowing your plants to access nutrients and water previously out of reach. Apply as a root dusting powder, soil drench, or transplant dip — seedlings establish faster, transplants recover quicker, and every plant builds a root system built to last. Reduces transplant shock for plants of all types and serves as a root growth stimulator from the moment of first application.
- WORKS ON 95% OF ALL PLANTS – From vegetables, herbs, and roses to fruit trees, shrubs, lawns, and container plants — endo mycorrhizae colonize the roots of nearly every crop and ornamental, while the ecto blend extends coverage to woody plants and trees. One product for your entire garden, indoors and out. No guessing which formula you need. Covers blueberries, succulents, palms, and orchids — mycorrhizae for plants across every species, and mycorrhizal fungi for soil in any system.
- POWERED BY HUMIC ACID, KELP & YUCCA – Every pound is enriched with leonardite humic acid for nutrient chelation, Ascophyllum nodosum kelp extract as a natural plant growth activator, and yucca wetting agent for deeper soil penetration. This premium carrier blend amplifies what the mycorrhizae can do — delivering results that a basic rooting powder or mycorrhizae powder alone simply cannot match.
- ONE BAG, 150 PLANTS, ZERO WASTE – Use as a seed inoculant, root dusting powder, soil drench, or transplant dip. Works for vegetables, legumes, pea and bean inoculant applications, herbs, raised beds, and container gardens. At 150 plants per bag, PureMyco delivers outstanding value per application — no reapplication needed all season. Effective as a pea inoculant, root booster for plants, and microbial inoculants for plants across legumes, grains, and broadleaf crops.
| Groundwork figure | How to interpret it |
|---|---|
| ~5–15% higher yields | Company-stated potential, not a universal yield guarantee. |
| Up to 40% less phosphorus fertilizer | Company-stated upper potential; “up to” matters, and no individual farm’s fertilizer reduction is assured. |
| 1.5–3.5 tCO₂e per acre per year | Company/program-stated carbon effect range, not independently established permanence or a guaranteed credit quantity. |
Groundwork’s site does not provide a complete head-to-head comparison of Rootella variants or a full account of independent, crop-specific trial methods. A sound purchase decision therefore requires checking the relevant product label, local registration and availability, application directions, and evidence applicable to the crop and growing conditions.
How does Rootella Carbon work?
Rootella Carbon is presented as a farmer program that links inoculant application to soil sampling and data analysis, with the possibility of carbon-credit revenue shared through a grower pool. In broad terms, the product is the agricultural input; sampling and analysis are intended to quantify soil-carbon outcomes; and credit revenue, if generated, may be shared with participating growers.

The available company description does not establish current enrollment terms, sampling protocol details, credit issuance conditions, payment timing, deductions, or a farmer’s expected net income. Nor does a stated carbon effect range by itself establish credit eligibility, permanence, or the amount a grower will receive. Farmers considering the program should obtain the current written terms and clarify who pays for sampling, what data are collected, how results are verified, how credits are allocated, and what happens if measured outcomes do not meet program thresholds.
What is known about Groundwork’s partnerships and reach?
Syngenta: announced commercialization plan
On 14 July 2026, Syngenta announced a partnership to commercialize Groundwork’s mycorrhiza-based products and soil-carbon solutions under Syngenta’s own label. The announcement identifies corn, soy, cereals, and sunflower as initial target crops in Latin America and Europe. It describes a plan, not proof that products have already launched across those markets or are available to every grower there.

Groundwork CEO Alon Werber said the partnership would combine Syngenta’s market access with Groundwork’s mycorrhizal capabilities and carbon program. That statement reflects the company’s strategic framing; it does not independently establish agronomic performance or carbon-credit economics.
Earlier distribution and commercial agreements
- Brazil: Groundwork’s 4 August 2021 announcement named NovaTero BioAg as its exclusive Brazilian distribution partner for Rootella BR at that time. It reported company-reported yield changes: corn hybrid yields increased 8–39% and soybean productivity 5–22% across specified seasons and regions. These are historical company-reported results, not a guarantee or evidence of current exclusivity or availability.
- India: On 1 June 2022, Groundwork announced a commercial agreement with ADAMA and described Tormos, a granular mycorrhizal inoculant tailored to Indian cropping practices. The announcement documents the agreement at that date; it does not establish current terms or present-day product access.
Reported scale
In a 2025 event announcement, Groundwork said Rootella inoculants were projected to be applied on over 5.5 million acres in 23 markets during 2025. This was a company estimate for that year, not an independently audited current acreage figure.

Negligible amounts of heavy metals won’t pass to your plant so it won't harm kids, pets, and pollinators—verified by science-backed quality labs.
What should farmers and investors take away?
Groundwork’s model has two connected parts: selling mycorrhizal agricultural inputs and seeking to create additional farmer value through soil-carbon measurement and potential credit sharing. The Syngenta announcement could broaden commercialization if the plan proceeds, while the earlier NovaTero and ADAMA announcements show that the company has pursued other market relationships.
The central uncertainties are practical and financial: product fit and results vary by crop and conditions, and public-facing program claims do not substitute for current product labels, local availability, independent efficacy evidence, or written carbon-program economics. For farmers, the key question is whether a specific formulation and contract make sense for their operation. For investors, announced partnerships and projected acreage are indicators of commercial activity, not by themselves evidence of recurring revenue, profitability, or durable carbon-credit value.
