Stargate is expected to use solar generation and battery storage for part of its power needs, not to run every facility exclusively on renewable energy. The original $100 billion figure was the venture’s initial deployment commitment, within a broader plan to invest $500 billion over four years.
What Stargate is building
Stargate is an artificial-intelligence infrastructure venture announced in January 2025 by OpenAI, SoftBank, Oracle and MGX. Its purpose is to build large data centers and related infrastructure for OpenAI’s systems in the United States and elsewhere.

The companies announced an initial commitment of $100 billion, with an intended investment of up to $500 billion over four years. Those figures describe planned investment, not money that has necessarily already been raised, spent or converted into operating data centers.
The original announcement also identified NVIDIA, Microsoft, Oracle and Arm among the technology and infrastructure partners. It emphasized the need for land, electricity, construction capacity, computing hardware and financing—showing that power was a central part of the project rather than a secondary detail. OpenAI’s announcement provides the original figures and scope.

What was actually reported about solar and batteries?
On January 23, 2025, Bloomberg reported that at least part of Stargate’s infrastructure was expected to use solar power and battery storage, potentially through SB Energy, a SoftBank-backed energy company. The report did not establish that all Stargate facilities would be solar-powered or independent of the electric grid.
It also did not disclose a complete portfolio-wide engineering plan, including:
- the total solar generating capacity;
- the battery capacity in megawatt-hours;
- how many hours the batteries could operate at full load;
- which projects would receive the power; or
- what percentage of Stargate’s electricity would come from renewable sources.
That makes “solar and batteries will power Stargate” an incomplete formulation. The more accurate description is that solar and storage are expected to be part of a broader, site-specific power mix. Bloomberg’s report is the source of the original solar-and-battery claim.
Why batteries matter for an AI data center
Solar panels produce the most electricity during daylight hours, while a data center may operate continuously. Batteries can help bridge that mismatch by storing electricity when solar production is high and discharging it later.
For a large computing campus, storage may be used to:
- shift daytime solar output into evening hours;
- reduce short-term peaks in grid demand;
- smooth rapid changes in renewable generation;
- help the facility respond to grid requests or demand-response programs; and
- provide short-duration ride-through power while grid equipment or backup systems respond.
But battery storage is not automatically the same as round-the-clock generation. A battery’s ability to support a campus depends on its power rating, measured in megawatts, and its stored energy, measured in megawatt-hours. A 1,000-megawatt battery with 1,000 megawatt-hours of storage could theoretically discharge at full output for one hour, before accounting for operating limits and losses.

A continuously operating AI campus therefore generally needs a combination of grid interconnection, renewable generation, storage, dispatchable generation, backup equipment and sophisticated power controls. Solar and batteries can improve flexibility and reduce emissions without making a facility off-grid.
SB Energy’s role became more concrete
The original solar report identified SB Energy as a likely developer of renewable installations. Later announcements gave that relationship a more specific infrastructure role.
On January 9, 2026, OpenAI and SoftBank announced a partnership and a $1 billion investment in SB Energy. OpenAI said SB Energy had been selected to build and operate a 1.2-gigawatt data center in Milam County, Texas, as part of the Stargate effort.
This is broader than hiring a company to supply solar panels. The partnership concerns development and operation of AI data-center campuses and associated energy infrastructure. However, the 1.2-gigawatt figure describes the capacity of that particular data-center project; it does not mean that 1.2 gigawatts of solar or battery capacity will be installed there.
The partnership details are available in OpenAI’s announcement and SB Energy’s account of the deal.

Abilene, Texas
The Abilene campus, associated with Oracle, Crusoe and Lancium, became the initial public focus of Stargate’s construction plans. The Associated Press reported that most of the site’s power comes from the local grid, whose generation mix includes natural gas, wind and solar.
That is an important correction to the phrase “solar-powered Stargate.” A grid-connected facility may consume electricity generated by solar farms at some times, but it is not necessarily powered exclusively by an on-site solar-and-storage system. AP’s reporting on the Abilene site describes that grid relationship.
Milam County, Texas
SB Energy was selected for a 1.2-gigawatt Texas data center in Milam County. The project links the company’s energy-development role with the physical construction and operation of a major AI campus. Public announcements do not establish that the facility will receive all of its electricity from solar power or that its batteries will provide long-duration backup.

Saline Township, Michigan
Oracle said the Stargate campus under construction in Saline Township would use DTE’s existing resources, supplemented by a project-financed battery-storage investment. This confirms that storage is becoming part of the infrastructure strategy at a specific Stargate campus.
It does not establish that the Michigan site is solar-powered, fully renewable or off-grid. The announcement is best read as evidence of grid power combined with storage. Oracle’s announcement provides the site-specific description.
Stargate’s footprint is expanding
Later announcements added planned sites across Texas, New Mexico, Ohio, Wisconsin and other locations. In September 2025, OpenAI and SoftBank said five new U.S. sites had been added and that Stargate was targeting a 10-gigawatt commitment.

OpenAI also announced an Oracle-related expansion involving 4.5 gigawatts of additional data-center capacity. These are announced plans and capacity targets, not proof that every site is operational or that all planned investment has been deployed.
International projects, including Stargate UAE, should also be evaluated separately. They should not automatically be treated as part of the original U.S. solar-and-battery claim because power arrangements, regulators and local grids differ by country.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Why the energy plan matters financially
AI data centers require unusually dense and often continuous electricity demand. Large campuses can face lengthy waits for grid interconnections, transmission upgrades, substations and new generation.
Adding solar and batteries near a facility could help a project manage peaks, make better use of available grid capacity and reduce exposure to some electricity costs or emissions. On-site or nearby generation may also help a campus begin operating before every planned transmission upgrade is complete.

- Solar: It has no fuel cost once operating, but requires land, equipment, interconnection and financing. Its output varies by time of day and weather.
- Batteries: They can shift power and reduce peaks, but add capital costs, degradation, fire-safety requirements and eventual replacement needs.
- Grid power: It offers access to a broader generation mix, but large interconnections may take years and can require expensive utility investment.
- Natural gas or other dispatchable generation: It can provide firm power when renewable output is low, but creates emissions and may face fuel, pipeline and permitting constraints.
The effects can extend beyond Stargate’s investors. Utilities may need to finance new substations, generation or transmission. Those investments can raise questions about cost allocation, electricity rates, local air pollution, water use, land use and the emissions profile of the regional grid.

Do not confuse the key measurements
Several different numbers are easy to mix together:
| Measure | What it means |
|---|---|
| Dollars | The $100 billion initial commitment and the broader $500 billion investment intention. |
| Data-center capacity | The planned physical or electrical capacity of a campus, often expressed in megawatts or gigawatts. |
| IT load | Electricity consumed by servers, accelerators, storage and networking equipment. |
| Facility load | IT load plus cooling, power conversion, lighting and other overhead. |
| Generation capacity | The maximum output of solar, gas, wind or other generating equipment. |
| Storage capacity | Energy stored in a battery, measured in megawatt-hours; it does not by itself reveal duration. |
A 1.2-gigawatt data center is therefore not the same thing as a 1.2-gigawatt solar farm or a 1.2-gigawatt-hour battery. Nor does a $100 billion investment commitment tell readers how much electricity any individual site will consume.
What remains unknown
As of September 11, 2026, public announcements do not provide a complete power blueprint for the entire Stargate portfolio. Important unanswered questions include:
- How many megawatts of solar generation will be installed at each site?
- How many megawatt-hours of battery storage will each project have?
- How long can the batteries support a campus at different load levels?
- Will storage be behind the meter, grid-connected, or both?
- Will “renewable-powered” refer to physical electricity, power-purchase agreements, renewable-energy certificates, or a combination?
- What percentage of each campus’s annual electricity will come from renewable sources?
- Which announced projects are operational, under construction, selected or merely planned?
- How much of the $500 billion target has actually been financed and deployed?
These distinctions matter because a facility can contract for renewable energy while still drawing physical electricity from a regional grid. That arrangement may support renewable development, but it is not the same as operating independently on solar panels and batteries.
The bottom line on the headline
The headline is substantially true only with an important qualification: Stargate is expected to use solar power and battery storage in part. The available evidence does not show that solar and batteries will power the entire $100 billion initial deployment—or the broader $500 billion plan—on their own.
The clearest current picture is a mixed, site-specific system combining grid electricity, renewable generation, battery storage and potentially other dispatchable sources. For readers assessing the financial and infrastructure stakes, the meaningful questions are not simply whether Stargate uses solar, but how much solar is built, how much storage is installed, who pays for grid upgrades, and how the projects perform once they are operating.
