Starbucks’ three-day return-to-office plan was a January 2023 policy for corporate employees within commuting distance of its Seattle headquarters—not a current company-wide rule. It was scheduled to begin January 30, with Tuesday and Wednesday as common office days and a third day chosen by each team. In 2025, Starbucks announced a minimum of four office days for specified support-office groups.
What Starbucks announced in January 2023
On January 11, 2023, Starbucks CEO Howard Schultz directed corporate employees within commuting distance of the company’s SoDo headquarters in Seattle to work in person at least three days a week, beginning January 30. GeekWire reported that the change affected 3,950 corporate workers in Seattle; that figure refers to the reported Seattle group, not Starbucks’ global workforce. GeekWire’s report described the announcement.
Which days employees were expected in the office
Tuesday and Wednesday were designated common office days. Each team and its leaders would decide the third day. The other two days were described as work-from-anywhere days.
Who the announcement covered
The report concerned corporate employees who lived within commuting distance of the Seattle headquarters. Store workers were not the subject of the announcement, and the reported 3,950 should not be read as a count of all Starbucks employees.

Why Schultz said Starbucks wanted employees back
Schultz framed the change as a way to restore in-person connection, relationships, and idea generation after pandemic-era remote work. In the employee memo quoted by GeekWire, he wrote: “We are a company rooted in human connection. We must have authentic and deep human connection everywhere we work.” Those statements describe management’s rationale; they do not establish that the three-day policy improved collaboration, productivity, or business results.
How the 2025 policy differs
Starbucks later announced a shift from three required office days to a minimum of four for specified support-office groups. CEO Brian Niccol’s 2025 message set Monday through Thursday as common days for the Seattle and Toronto Support Centers and North American regional offices, with the expectation beginning in the new fiscal year. The message did not give a calendar start date; the Associated Press reported that the change would begin in early October 2025. The AP report provides that timing.

These are successive policies, not two options employees could choose between. The earlier three-day headline is historical and does not describe the later expectation for the groups named in the 2025 announcement.

Niccol’s message also said Support Center people leaders would be expected to be based in Seattle or Toronto within 12 months. Individual contributors would not be asked to relocate, but future roles and lateral moves would require a Seattle or Toronto base, with approved in-market roles retained where needed. The AP reported that Starbucks would offer a one-time voluntary exit program to affected workers who chose not to relocate.
