Starbucks appointed Anand Varadarajan executive vice president and chief technology officer effective January 19, 2026, after nearly 19 years at Amazon. Reporting directly to CEO Brian Niccol, he is being asked to help solve an operational problem: coordinating café, mobile, drive-thru and delivery demand without overwhelming stores or compromising the customer experience.

What Starbucks announced

Starbucks announced Varadarajan’s appointment on December 19, 2025. He joined the executive leadership team and leads Starbucks Technology. The company says he most recently led technology and supply-chain operations for Amazon’s Worldwide Grocery Stores business.

Before Amazon, Varadarajan held software-engineering roles at Oracle and startups. Starbucks’ announcement describes his background and mandate; it does not say that he personally ran Whole Foods, Amazon Fresh or every part of Amazon’s grocery operation. Starbucks’ announcement provides the company’s full biography.

What happened to Starbucks’ prior technology leadership?

Deb Hall Lefevre retired in September 2025, according to Starbucks. Ningyu Chen served as interim CTO while the company searched for a permanent successor, and Starbucks thanked Chen for keeping technology priorities moving during the transition.

Why Amazon grocery experience is relevant—and where it is not

Amazon grocery technology operates at high volume and links several systems that customers experience as one promise: demand forecasting, inventory availability, supply-chain coordination, digital ordering and fulfillment reliability. Missing inventory or a late order can quickly damage trust.

Starbucks has a different operating model. Drinks and food are prepared in individual stores, often to order, rather than picked from a centralized grocery-fulfillment network. Preparation times vary by beverage, food item and customization. Even so, both businesses depend on reliable, customer-facing operational systems.

  • Forecasting must anticipate demand before it reaches a store or fulfillment operation.
  • Digital orders must be accepted and sequenced against real production capacity.
  • Inventory and supply-chain information must be accurate enough to avoid disappointing customers.
  • Equipment and software failures can interrupt service at the busiest moments.

The transferable credential is therefore experience with complex, high-volume operations—not proof that grocery fulfillment and beverage production work the same way.

The specific problem Starbucks is trying to fix

Starbucks’ technology challenge is the interaction between digital demand and store execution. A mobile order, a café order, a drive-thru ticket and a delivery order may all compete for the same baristas, equipment and handoff space.

Brian Niccol previously described mobile-order sequencing as a source of congestion. Without a system that sequences orders appropriately, the handoff area can fill up and partners can become focused on clearing a rush instead of creating a consistent customer connection. His comments appear in Starbucks’ first-quarter fiscal 2025 earnings transcript.

The practical symptoms Starbucks must address include:

  • Mobile orders arriving faster than a store can produce them.
  • Different channels competing for the same production capacity.
  • Unpredictable pickup waits and crowded handoff areas.
  • Barista task switching and workload that does not match demand.
  • Inventory gaps, equipment downtime and schedules that miss peak periods.

How the hire fits the “Back to Starbucks” plan

“Back to Starbucks” is a broader recovery strategy, not a standalone technology project. Starbucks describes work across customer service, staffing and partner support, store design and seating, menu and marketing, operations, digital systems and equipment.

Technology is an enabling layer for those goals:

  • Order sequencing can improve speed while reducing congestion.
  • Forecasting can help put popular products in the right stores.
  • Scheduling tools can align labor with anticipated demand.
  • Equipment monitoring can identify warning signals before failures disrupt service.
  • Personalized digital experiences can make loyalty and ordering more useful.

Varadarajan is not the sole owner of the turnaround. Store operations, finance, human resources, supply chain, marketing and field leadership all determine whether a technology change works in practice. Reporting directly to Niccol does, however, signal that technology is being treated as a core operating function.

Technology initiatives Starbucks has described

In January 2026 investor-day materials and related technology communications, Starbucks identified several initiatives. The company describes these as part of its direction; the available disclosures do not establish which projects Varadarajan personally designed or launched.

Initiative Stated purpose Operational question
Smart Queue Sequence café, mobile, drive-thru and delivery orders Can it reduce total congestion without simply moving delays to another channel?
AI-enabled forecasting Help anticipate demand and product availability Are forecasts accurate enough for local events, weather and unusual demand?
Data-driven scheduling Match staffing more closely to demand Does it support partners, or create opaque schedules that employees cannot trust?
Equipment and system monitoring Identify early warning signals and recommend action Can stores respond before a failure affects customers?
Digital personalization Reduce friction and support discovery Does convenience improve without making the coffeehouse feel purely transactional?
Starbucks app beta inside ChatGPT Support drink discovery and ordering-related inspiration Does the experience add practical value beyond existing Starbucks channels?

Starbucks explains these use cases in its AI announcement and its January 2026 investor-day overview.

What the early results show—and what they do not

Starbucks reported global comparable-store-sales growth in fiscal fourth quarter 2025, the first such growth in seven quarters. It later reported same-store-sales growth in the United States and every major global market in fiscal first quarter 2026. The company also said peak throughput averaged under four minutes across café and drive-thru coffeehouses in that quarter.

For fiscal 2026, Starbucks gave a target of at least 3% global and U.S. comparable-store-sales growth, non-GAAP earnings per share of $2.15 to $2.40, and 600 to 650 net new coffeehouses globally. Its fiscal second-quarter 2026 release described growth in both revenue and earnings as a milestone in the turnaround.

These are company-reported results and explanations. Varadarajan started on January 19, 2026, so some decisions, deployments and performance trends predated his arrival. The results overlap with his tenure, but they do not prove that he caused any particular improvement. See the company’s Q1 fiscal 2026 release and Q2 fiscal 2026 release.

The trade-offs Starbucks must manage

Different economics and workflows

Amazon grocery fulfillment and Starbucks beverage production have different labor models, physical layouts, product lifecycles and customer expectations. A solution that works in a warehouse or grocery network may require substantial redesign for a coffeehouse.

Technology cannot replace capacity

A better queue cannot compensate for inadequate staffing, training, equipment or store space. If demand exceeds production capacity, software can choose an order sequence but cannot make drinks faster without affecting quality or employee workload.

Automation can create new friction

AI scheduling and forecasting may frustrate employees when recommendations are inaccurate, unexplained or perceived as labor-cutting. Store partners need usable tools, clear escalation paths and authority to override bad recommendations.

Speed can conflict with connection

Starbucks is simultaneously emphasizing throughput and human connection. Optimizing every process for speed could undermine the atmosphere and service behaviors that the turnaround is intended to restore.

Global deployment is difficult

Starbucks operates company-operated, licensed and international stores with different formats, markets and technology environments. A platform that performs well in one store type may need different controls, integrations and training elsewhere.

How to judge whether the CTO strategy is working

The meaningful test is not how many AI features Starbucks announces. It is whether technology makes the operation more predictable for customers and more manageable for partners.

  • Lower and less variable waits during peak periods.
  • More accurate promised pickup times.
  • Fewer order handoff and production errors.
  • Higher throughput without lower beverage or food quality.
  • Lower partner task switching and better employee experience.
  • Improved customer satisfaction and repeat visits alongside speed gains.
  • Reliable deployment across store formats and geographic markets.
  • Evidence that technology spending produces financial returns rather than only higher operating costs.

Reporting should also examine outages, inaccurate forecasts, inventory errors, payment failures and whether Smart Queue improves all channels or prioritizes one at the expense of another. Public company materials to date do not conclusively answer those questions.

Current status

As of August 18, 2026, Varadarajan’s appointment is no longer prospective: his January start date has passed, and Starbucks investor-relations materials list him as executive vice president and chief technology officer. The current leadership listing confirms his role. Starbucks’ investor-relations page provides the company’s current reporting timeline.

The Bottom Line

Varadarajan’s hiring is a bet that Starbucks can make technology less visible to customers and more useful to employees: smoother queues, better forecasts, dependable equipment and a more consistent store experience. His Amazon grocery background is relevant to that operating challenge, but the appointment itself is not evidence that the turnaround has succeeded.
