What changed on October 1, 2025?
An October 1, 2025 report quoting Microsoft’s user notice said: “Starting October 1, users will no longer be able to directly redeem Reward points for Xbox Game Pass subscriptions.” The reported replacement instruction was: “Users will need to redeem points for Xbox gift cards to cover the cost of a Game Pass subscription.”

This was a change to the redemption catalog, not the end of Microsoft Rewards. The affected option was the direct conversion of points into subscription time.

Why fans call it a Rewards “nerf”
The old transaction had a clear point price for a month or another listed period of Game Pass. The new transaction inserts a second conversion: points become currency value, and that value is then applied to a subscription. If the gift-card exchange rate is unfavorable, the points needed to assemble enough credit for one month rise.

There is no authoritative worldwide points-to-month or points-to-dollar figure. Rewards catalogs differ by country and sometimes by account. A community discussion cited a France-specific example, but that example should not be treated as a global rate. The only reliable comparison is the catalog shown inside your own account.
That is why users reused Lando Calrissian’s line, “This deal is getting worse all the time,” to describe the change. StarWars.com attributes the line to the character; in this context it is fan shorthand for declining redemption value, not a Microsoft slogan.

How to check whether Game Pass is still worth your points
1. Check your local Rewards catalog
Sign in to the Microsoft Rewards dashboard for the account and country where you use Game Pass, open the redemption area, and note the points price and monetary value of each available Xbox gift-card denomination. Labels and denominations can vary by region.
2. Compare the conversion with your subscription price
Use the local Game Pass price shown at checkout, not a price from another country or an old promotion. Calculate the effective rate with:

points required for the gift card ÷ gift-card value = points per unit of account credit
Then determine how much credit is needed for the subscription period you actually buy. If the denomination exceeds one month’s charge, include the value of the leftover balance rather than assuming all of the credit is consumed.

3. Include any cash payment
If the available credit does not cover the full charge, add the remaining cash cost to your comparison. A redemption that appears to provide a “free month” may instead reduce the bill while leaving a balance on your payment method.
4. Value the flexibility of unused credit
Gift-card credit is less targeted than a direct subscription reward. That can be a disadvantage if you only want Game Pass, but it can be useful if you also buy games, add-ons or other eligible items. Check the terms attached to your regional gift card before redeeming.

What has not been established globally
- There is no single worldwide points price for an Xbox gift card or a month of Game Pass.
- A rate seen in France or another community example does not establish the rate for your country.
- The October 1, 2025 change does not show that Microsoft Rewards itself shut down.
- Promotional pricing, plan choice and account eligibility can alter the amount of credit required.
Bottom line
Microsoft Rewards still exists, but the straightforward points-for-Game-Pass exchange reported removed on October 1, 2025 is no longer the benchmark. The practical test is your account’s current gift-card rate: compare the points required for enough Xbox credit with the local Game Pass charge, including any leftover balance and cash you must pay. If that effective rate is substantially worse than the former direct reward, the fan verdict that “this deal is getting worse all the time” is financially justified; if your regional rate remains favorable, Rewards can still lower the subscription bill.
