How much money has Star Citizen raised?
Star Citizen crossed the $1 billion threshold on May 24, 2026, according to a report published the following day by PC Gamer, which linked to the official tracker. A separate milestone page gives the same date and says it checked official Cloud Imperium sources. The precise live counter value is not established here; because the counter changes, check RSI’s Funding Stats page for the current number rather than treating the dated milestone as today’s exact total.
What the funding counter does—and does not—measure
Cloud Imperium’s 2024 financial commentary says the “Pledges / Sales (from Counter)” line is taken directly from the daily Funding Stats counter and represents net receipts from backers and customers. The company reported $116.3 million in this line for 2024, within $146.6 million in total income for that year. The counter-derived figure is therefore one income category, not a substitute for the company’s full accounts, and neither number by itself states how much the game has cost to develop.
Cloud Imperium says the vast majority of counter-derived sales came from starter packs, which grant access to Star Citizen’s alpha along with ships and digital items. A smaller portion came from concept-ship pledges; those included a loaner ship usable in the alpha. These are descriptions of what customers received, not evidence that every purchase represents the same kind of commitment or spending.

What buyers currently get
RSI’s 2026 getting-started checklist says the live Star Citizen environment can be accessed with an RSI account and a game package. The separate single-player game Squadron 42 is not included as the same playable experience: RSI’s April 2026 checklist said it remained in development and was not yet available.
For the PC specifications listed by RSI on September 23, 2026, the minimum includes 16 GB of memory and a 150+ GB SSD; the recommended specifications include 32 GB of memory and a 150+ GB SSD. RSI cautions that requirements can change and that actual performance varies with location, server population, background applications, and network conditions. Check the current requirements page before buying or upgrading hardware.

Do you need a joystick or other flight hardware?
No. RSI documents support for joystick, rudder, mouse, keyboard, and other peripherals, with profiles available in-game. It also provides a profile guide for the Thrustmaster T.16000M dual sticks. That makes flight hardware an optional way to configure controls, not a prerequisite for access; the right input depends on preference and the equipment a player already owns.

What the $1 billion headline does not tell you
- It is a project-funding milestone, not a verified present-day counter total. Use RSI’s live tracker for the current tally.
- It does not equal Cloud Imperium’s total income: the company’s 2024 commentary separates counter-derived pledges and sales from total income.
- It does not establish total development spending, profitability, or the value any individual backer received.
- It does not mean Squadron 42 was available to play; RSI said in April 2026 that it remained in development.
