If you receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), report changes in income, resources, and living arrangements as soon as possible. These can affect eligibility or your monthly payment. SSA’s general deadline is no later than the 10th day of the month after the month the change happened—for example, a change in May is generally due by June 10. Wage reporting has a separate monthly instruction: report wages by the sixth day of the month after they are paid.

1. Changes in income

Report changes in money you receive, including wages and other income. Examples include pensions, unemployment benefits, child support, and cash from friends or relatives. Income may affect the amount of SSI you receive, but how it is counted depends on the type of income and your circumstances.

If you live with a spouse, SSA says to report your spouse’s income. In applicable cases, parents’ income or income from other people may also matter. Self-employment estimates and changes in other income may have their own reporting instructions. See SSA’s wage reporting instructions for the methods and details that apply to wages.

Wages have a monthly reporting schedule

SSA instructs recipients to report monthly wages by the sixth day of the month after they are paid. A recent SSA notice describes this earlier date as encouraged to help reduce the risk of overpayments, while also stating the general deadline of the 10th day of the month after a change. Follow the wage-specific instructions rather than assuming that the general deadline is the only relevant date.

2. Changes in resources

Tell SSA about changes in resources such as bank accounts, cash, property, and other assets, as applicable. In an October 7, 2026 advocate notice, SSA states resource limits of $2,000 for an individual and $3,000 for a couple. These figures do not mean every asset counts the same way: exclusions and eligibility rules can affect how resources are treated, so the figures alone do not determine whether someone qualifies.

Report a resource change even if you are unsure how SSA will count it. SSA can assess the details under the rules that apply to your case.

3. Changes in living arrangements

Report a move, a household member moving in or out, changes in rent or utility costs, and help you receive with living expenses. These changes may affect your SSI payment; the result depends on your specific circumstances.

SSA also lists admission to or discharge from a hospital, nursing home, or correctional institution among changes recipients may need to report. Use SSA’s change-reporting guidance for instructions about your situation.

Other changes SSA says to report

Income, resources, and living arrangements are three important categories, not the complete reporting list. SSA also identifies changes such as your address, household, marital status, citizenship or immigration status, help with living expenses, eligibility for other benefits, certain time outside the United States, and other listed circumstances. Review SSA’s full reporting guidance rather than treating these three categories as exhaustive.

When and how to report

Meet the deadline

SSA’s general rule is to report a change as soon as possible and no later than the 10th day of the month after the month it occurred. For example, if a change happens in May, the general deadline is June 10. Wages have the separate sixth-day monthly reporting instruction described above.

Choose a route that accepts your report

For general situation changes, follow SSA’s change-reporting instructions, which include contacting your local Social Security office. SSA also describes uploading documents through a Social Security account. Wage reports have specific routes, including an online account, mobile app, automated phone system, and other options listed on SSA’s wage reporting page. Check the relevant SSA instructions to confirm that the route you choose handles the type of report you need to make.

Keep your own records

As a practical precaution, note when and how you reported a change and keep copies of supporting documents and any submission confirmation you receive. SSA explains reporting methods and supporting documents; keeping your own records does not guarantee a particular decision or payment outcome.

What can happen if you report late or miss a change

SSA says it may reduce SSI payments by $25 to $100 for each untimely or omitted change, as described in its 2026 materials. Form SSA-8005-INST (03-2026) describes possible deductions of $25, $50, or $100. A late or missing report can also contribute to an overpayment that SSA may ask you to repay. Reporting problems can also mean you are underpaid or receive benefits later than you otherwise would.

SSA’s 2026 edition of Understanding Supplemental Security Income Reporting Responsibilities states: “You may be underpaid and not receive the benefits due to you, as quickly as you otherwise could, if you do not report changes on time.”

Knowingly making a false or misleading statement, or knowingly failing to report important changes, may lead to benefit sanctions. SSA describes suspension periods of six months for a first period, 12 months for the next, and 24 months for subsequent periods. These sanctions concern knowing conduct; an ordinary mistake is not automatically the same thing.
