In the U.S., Square Free costs $0 per month per location, but Square still charges payment-processing fees on online sales. The current listed rate is 3.3% + $0.30 per online or invoice transaction. So you can launch a hosted storefront without a monthly software subscription, but you cannot generally sell online at no cost.
This guide uses Square’s U.S. pricing and plan structure current as of August 18, 2026. Your actual rate may differ if you have a legacy account, custom pricing, a different payment method, or an account outside the U.S.

What “free” means on Square
Square Free removes the recurring software subscription. Square provides the hosted storefront and does not charge a monthly plan fee, but it is not free payment processing and it is not a free business operation.

For each paid online order, Square deducts the processing fee before transferring the remaining funds. You may still have costs for:
- Payment processing
- A custom domain and its registration or renewal
- Postage, packaging, returns, and fulfillment
- Sales-tax registration, filing, and remittance
- Advertising and marketing
- Hardware for in-person sales
- Optional services, add-ons, or usage-based features
A free Square-branded subdomain may be available, but do not assume Square Free includes a custom domain. Square separates free subdomain use from custom-domain connection and domain management. Check the current comparison and your account before budgeting for a branded web address.
What you can do with Square Free
Square’s current online-selling tools can support a basic store, including:
- A website builder with basic layouts and design controls
- Product catalog and online checkout
- Inventory and order synchronization with Square’s broader ecosystem
- Pickup, local delivery, and shipping tools
- Discounts and product reviews
- Built-in SEO tools and blog content
- Abandoned-cart emails
- Multiple payment methods, payment links, and remote-payment options
- Social and marketplace integrations where available and eligible
Feature placement can change under Square’s consolidated Free, Plus, and Premium structure. The live plan comparison is more reliable than an older Square Online review. Square also maintains current instructions for pages, domains, SEO, integrations, and abandoned-cart emails in its online-store support center.
Square Free transaction fees
Square’s listed U.S. rates for Square Free include:

Square says processing fees apply to the total transaction amount, including tax and tip. The applicable rate depends on the payment channel, not simply on whether you use Square online.
For the standard online rate, the calculation is:

The fixed $0.30 makes low-priced products disproportionately expensive. These examples exclude shipping, packaging, taxes, refunds, chargebacks, advertising, and third-party services.

When does Square Plus become cheaper?
Square Plus lowers the online percentage from 3.3% to 2.9%, but the $0.30 fixed fee does not change. It also adds a $49 monthly charge per active location.
The approximate online-processing break-even is:
$49 ÷ 0.004 = $12,250 in monthly online salesThat means:

This is a processing-only calculation. It assumes the same number and size of orders and excludes taxes, refunds, other costs, and the value of Plus features. It is also a sales-volume break-even, not a profit break-even. A business with thin margins may reasonably remain on Free even above this level.
Is Square Premium worth paying for?
Premium has the same listed online rate as Plus: 2.9% + $0.30. Therefore, Premium is unlikely to pay for itself through online processing alone.
Its case depends on features and other payment activity. Square lists these in-person rates:

- Plus: 2.5% + $0.15
- Premium: 2.4% + $0.15
Premium also lists a 0% gift-card loading fee, compared with 2.5% for Free and Plus. Text-message marketing is unavailable on Free, while Plus includes 500 messages and Premium includes 2,500, with overage charges listed by Square.
Choose Premium only if its operational, marketing, gift-card, or in-person processing benefits are worth the additional $100 per month over Plus. For a purely online store, Free or Plus is usually the more relevant comparison.
Other costs that can make a “free” store expensive
Domain costs
A Square subdomain is not the same as a custom branded domain. A custom domain may require registration and renewal fees, and any included domain benefit may be limited or promotional. Confirm the current terms before treating it as a permanent free benefit.

Shipping
Square can provide shipping-rate tools, labels, and related integrations, but you still pay for postage, packaging, returns, and fulfillment. A shipping tool does not mean shipping is free.

Taxes
Square may help calculate or collect taxes in supported situations, but you remain responsible for registration, exemptions, filing, remittance, and local compliance.
Hardware
Online-only sellers do not need Square hardware to accept online payments. Sellers adding in-person sales may need a reader, terminal, register, or other equipment. Hardware is sold separately; Square advertises options starting at $59.
Marketing
Marketing tools may have plan limits or overage charges. In particular, the current comparison does not include text-message marketing on Free.
Afterpay and international cards
Afterpay carries a listed fee of 6% + $0.30. It may increase conversion, but compare that cost with the additional sales it produces. International cards add 1.5% under Square’s listed fee schedule, which can materially affect stores serving tourists or overseas customers.
Refunds and disputes
Square lists no fee for chargeback and dispute management as a general fee category, but a dispute can still cost you the sale proceeds and create product, shipping, and administrative losses. Check your current account terms for how processing fees are treated when a payment is refunded.

To check your account-specific pricing, sign in to Square Dashboard and go to:
Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions
Square says eligible legacy U.S. customers can migrate through a self-service process that cancels the old hosting plan and issues a prorated refund. However, switching may be irreversible with respect to the prior subscription, and feature placement may change. Before confirming, review which features you would lose or move and whether your location’s price differs from the public pricing page.
For the current switching flow, Square directs sellers to choose See what’s new, compare plans, select Free, Plus, or Premium, review the changes, and confirm. Restarting Square POS apps may be necessary if prompted.
Who should use Square Free?
Square Free is a strong starting point for:
- A seller validating a product or small catalog
- A local retailer or maker with modest online sales
- A restaurant already using Square POS
- A business that values shared online and in-person inventory
- A seller with unpredictable monthly volume
- A business comfortable with basic storefront customization and a possible Square subdomain
It is less suitable for a high-volume store where the 0.4-percentage-point difference materially affects margins, or for a brand that needs advanced subscriptions, memberships, B2B pricing, complex catalog rules, extensive design control, international flexibility, or payment-processor choice.
Square Free versus other platforms
Square is most compelling when integrated payments, POS, inventory, pickup, and local operations matter more than maximum ecommerce customization. The $0 subscription makes it useful for testing demand, but the online processing rate and Square ecosystem remain part of the trade-off.

- Shopify is more ecommerce-first, with a broad app ecosystem and stronger scaling options, but normally involves a recurring subscription.
- Wix emphasizes visual website customization; payment and ecommerce availability vary by country.
- Big Cartel can suit artists and sellers with very small catalogs, but is less oriented toward complex omnichannel operations.
- Squarespace emphasizes visual presentation and content publishing; commerce fees depend on plan and payment setup.
Do not assume another platform is cheaper without comparing its current subscription, payment fees, payment restrictions, shipping tools, and country availability.
How to decide
- Estimate monthly online sales and order count. Use both numbers because the $0.30 fixed fee matters.
- Separate online and in-person sales. Square uses different rates for different payment channels.
- List must-have features. Do not upgrade solely because a review says a feature belongs to a particular tier.
- Add non-Square costs. Include domains, shipping, packaging, taxes, marketing, hardware, and payment-method surcharges.
- Check your Dashboard. Go to Settings → Account & Settings → Pricing & subscriptions and compare the rate shown for your account.
Use Square Free when volume is low or uncertain, Square POS integration is valuable, and you do not need paid-plan features. Consider Plus when your online volume approaches roughly $12,250 per month or its features justify the $49 per-location fee. Consider Premium only when premium tools, gift-card savings, or substantial in-person activity justify the additional cost.
