SQE Study Materials: What You Need for SQE1 and SQE2 (Including Free Official Samples)

The SRA’s free SQE samples are useful for orientation, not a complete course. Here’s how to assemble current SQE1 and SQE2 study materials and compare options.

The most useful SQE study materials are a current SRA specification, structured subject coverage, practice questions, timed mocks and feedback that explains your mistakes. The SRA’s free sample questions are a good starting point, but they are not a full mock or a complete course. For SQE2, use materials that cover both written and oral skills.

Start with the current SRA specification

Use the Solicitors Regulation Authority’s SQE1 Assessment Specification to define what to study. The version updated in August 2026 applies to assessments from 1 September 2026. SQE1 is closed book and tests the application of fundamental legal rules and principles expected of a newly qualified solicitor. The SRA sets the law cut-off at four calendar months before the first assessment in a sitting window, so check the cut-off for your own sitting rather than relying on an old course or book.

For SQE2, use the SRA’s assessment information and samples to understand the practical skills and assessment formats. A general legal textbook alone will not prepare you for the skills assessments.

10 SQE study materials to assemble

These are material types, not a ranking of brands. Choose only what fills a gap in your plan; duplicating several question banks, for example, may be less useful than reviewing one carefully.

  1. Current SQE1 specification

Keep the applicable SRA specification as your scope checklist. Compare every course outline, book and question bank against it, including the sitting’s law cut-off.

  2. SRA SQE1 sample questions

The official SQE1 sample questions show the single-best-answer format. The SRA explicitly says they do not cover all FLK material and are not a full mock, so use them to get oriented—not as your only practice resource.

  3. Structured SQE1 subject notes or course materials

Use a coherent set of notes or course materials to cover the relevant FLK topics. Check that the scope and law are current for your sitting. Provider materials can impose useful structure, but a dated brochure cannot establish what a provider currently offers.

  4. Single-best-answer question bank

A question bank gives you repeated application practice across the FLK. Prefer explanations that show why the correct option is best and why tempting alternatives are wrong; a score without reasoning gives you little direction for revision.

  5. Timed SQE1 mock examinations

Use full-length timed practice to work on pacing and concentration as well as legal knowledge. The SRA’s sample page describes each of FLK1 and FLK2 as 170 single-best-answer questions, delivered in two 85-question sessions of 2 hours 33 minutes each. Match practice to the format and timing that apply to your assessment.

  6. Mock-review and error log

After each practice set, record the topic, the rule you missed, why your chosen answer failed and what you will revisit. This is a simple study aid rather than another product, but it makes practice useful by turning errors into targeted revision.

  7. Current SQE study or revision book

A printed book can work well as a portable reference or for readers who prefer paper. Before buying, check the edition, jurisdiction, topic coverage and publication date against the SRA specification and the law cut-off for your sitting. No particular title or current listing is established here.

  8. SRA SQE2 sample resource

The SRA’s SQE2 sample questions include tasks and supporting documents, candidate answers, commentary and criteria analysis. The page also provides video samples for oral advocacy and interviewing. The SRA cautions that samples do not show every possible task or style.

  9. SQE2 written-task practice

Choose practice that requires you to produce written work from case materials, rather than only read model answers. Compare your work with model responses and assessment criteria where available; feedback should help you identify what to improve in structure, analysis and client-focused communication.

  10. SQE2 oral-skills practice

Prepare for oral skills with exercises in interviewing and advocacy, ideally with a partner or tutor who can give specific feedback. Reading a textbook about a skill is not a substitute for performing it under realistic conditions.

What the free official samples can—and cannot—do

The SRA’s SQE1 samples are useful for seeing question style, but they neither cover the full FLK nor constitute a complete mock. Pair them with broad subject coverage and additional timed practice. For SQE2, the official sample materials are more varied: they include written and oral examples, supporting documents, candidate responses and commentary. They still cannot represent every task or possible style.

These resources are free reference points, not a complete study programme. You can use them to assess whether a paid course or book explains the assessment format clearly, but do not infer that a provider’s mock predicts your result.

How to compare books, question banks, mocks and courses

Check What to look for Why it matters
Specification alignment Coverage that matches the applicable SRA specification and sitting’s law cut-off. Outdated scope or law can lead you to spend time on the wrong material.
Coverage For SQE1, coverage across relevant FLK topics; for SQE2, practice across the written and oral skills assessments. A strong sample or a few polished topics do not establish complete coverage.
Practice format Single-best-answer questions, timed full mocks, written tasks or oral exercises, as appropriate. Each format trains a different part of preparation.
Feedback Reasoned answer explanations, commentary, model responses or criteria-based analysis. Feedback helps turn performance into a revision plan.
Currency Publication date, edition, updated law and any relevant changes in scope. Older materials may no longer match your assessment window.
Cost and access Current price, access period, included materials and terms, confirmed with the provider. A brochure or old product page may not reflect the present offer.

Examples of provider materials—and the limits of the evidence

Provider documents illustrate the kinds of resources available, but they should not be treated as independent evidence of quality or current availability.

  • BARBRI: Its 2025 prospectus describes SQE1 preparation, eight full mock tests, a realistic mock exam and free sample course materials. These are claims in a dated provider document; verify current contents and access directly with BARBRI. Read the 2025 prospectus.
  • QLTS School: Its brochure describes a question bank, mock exams with model answers and a skills textbook. The brochure does not establish present availability, so confirm current materials and terms with the provider. Read the brochure.

Those documents do not support ranking either provider against the other, predicting exam performance or claiming that a particular course improves pass rates.

A practical way to build your study set

  1. Open the SRA specification for the assessment you are taking and mark its topics and relevant law cut-off.
  2. Choose one main source for structured coverage, such as course materials or a current book, and verify that its scope is suitable.
  3. Add a question bank for SQE1 or task-based written and oral practice for SQE2.
  4. Use the SRA samples to familiarise yourself with official examples, while keeping their coverage limits in mind.
  5. Schedule timed practice and review each attempt with explanations, commentary or assessment criteria.
  6. Before paying for any provider option, confirm the current price, included materials, access period and version directly with the provider.

Budget for the assessment separately from study materials

The SRA listed assessment fees for 2026/27 as £2,006 for SQE1 and £3,086 for SQE2 in its April 2026 update. These are assessment fees, not study-material prices; check the SRA’s April 2026 SQE update for the applicable fee information and confirm the amount for your booking.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
