Spotify says it paid more than $11 billion in music royalties in 2025, a record annual total. That figure is money paid to music rights holders across the service—not a promise that any particular artist received more. Spotify uses a shared royalty pool, and what an artist ultimately takes home depends on rights ownership and contractual splits. That gap between platform-wide payouts and individual income helps explain why Spotify’s growth claims have not ended criticism.
What does Spotify’s $11 billion payout figure mean for an artist?
Spotify reported paying more than $11 billion in music royalties in 2025, calling it the largest annual payout by a company in music history. The total describes payments to rights holders, not artists’ net income. Spotify also reported that 81,000 artists earned at least $10,000 from Spotify alone in 2025, 13,800 earned at least $100,000, and more than 1,500 earned at least $1 million. These are threshold counts: they do not show the median artist’s earnings, costs, or take-home income after contractual shares. Spotify’s 2025 payout and artist earnings figures are useful context, but they cannot establish what a typical artist earns.
Spotify says more than 80% of artists who generated $1 million or more did not have a Top-50 hit. That indicates substantial Spotify royalties are not limited to artists with a chart-topping single, but it does not describe how income is distributed among all artists.
Is there a fixed Spotify rate per stream?
No. Spotify does not promise one fixed number of cents for every play. It says about two-thirds of its music revenue goes into a royalty pool, which is allocated according to streamshare: a rights holder’s share of eligible streams relative to the total. Subscription and advertising revenue, listening volume, and the distribution of streams all affect the result.

A commonly quoted “per-stream rate” is an average calculated after the fact by dividing payouts by streams. It can change as revenue and stream volume change; it is not a universal tariff attached to each play. Spotify argues that a larger overall pool and greater engagement matter more than a higher calculated average per stream. That is the company’s explanation, not an independent finding that every artist is better off. See Spotify’s payout FAQ for its account of the model.
How does Spotify money reach artists and songwriters?
Spotify says it pays rights holders rather than artists or songwriters directly. Rights holders—including labels, distributors, publishers, or other parties with relevant rights—then pay according to their agreements with artists and songwriters. As Spotify puts it, “We don’t pay artists or songwriters directly, we pay rights holders, who then pay you based on your agreement with them.” The platform’s gross payment to a rights holder is therefore not the same as an artist’s net receipt.

- Ownership and splits: Multiple parties may hold shares in a recording or composition, so the royalty allocation may be divided.
- Contract terms: Label, distributor, and publishing agreements determine how money is passed on and divided.
- Withdrawal costs and minimums: Some intermediaries set withdrawal thresholds, and bank transaction fees can consume small balances.
Recording royalties and songwriting or publishing royalties are distinct. The distinction matters especially when considering Spotify’s 1,000-stream recording-royalty threshold.
What is Spotify’s 1,000-stream rule?
Since April 2024, a track needs at least 1,000 streams in the preceding 12 months to qualify for Spotify recording royalties. The rule concerns eligibility for the recorded-music royalty pool; it should not be read as a claim that a track below the threshold earns no money of any kind. Spotify says publishing royalty calculations did not change under the policy.

Spotify’s stated rationale is that tiny recording-royalty payments on very low-stream tracks often do not reach uploaders after distributor minimums and bank fees. It said about $40 million a year in small payments could instead be redirected toward tracks meeting the threshold, and that 99.5% of streams were on tracks with at least 1,000 annual streams. Those figures and the claimed benefit are Spotify’s account of the policy, not an independent assessment of how each artist is affected. Spotify also reported that 3.5 million artists had at least one qualifying song in 2025, and that average recording royalties per monetized song more than tripled from 2023 to 2025. These platform-reported averages do not mean every song or artist saw that increase.

Why do artists and songwriters still disagree with Spotify?
Aggregate payout growth does not answer how royalties are distributed across artists, how contractual splits affect take-home pay, or whether the typical artist’s net income is rising. The available figures do not provide a median or a longitudinal measure of typical artist income. A larger industry-wide pool can coexist with widely different outcomes for individual creators.
The threshold also draws a sharp eligibility line: tracks under 1,000 streams in the prior year do not qualify for Spotify recording royalties under this rule, even if they account for a small share of streams overall. And songwriter earnings involve publishing rights, which Spotify says are outside the threshold change. Platform totals alone cannot settle whether the value reaching songwriters is adequate.

In a March 11, 2025 report, TechCrunch described Grammy-nominated songwriters boycotting a Spotify songwriter event amid concerns about declining songwriter royalties. This is a reported example of criticism, not evidence of how widespread those views are or an independent measurement of songwriter income over time.
What do Spotify’s figures say about independent artists?
Spotify reported that DIY artists and artists signed to independent labels accounted for about half of Spotify-generated industry revenue in 2023. That historical platform statistic shows independent routes represented a substantial portion of the revenue Spotify attributed to the industry; it does not show that independent artists shared those earnings evenly or that individual creators retained half of that money.
