Spotify says it paid more than $10 billion in music royalties in 2024. That is a company-reported total paid into the music-rights system—not $10 billion paid directly to artists, and not a per-stream rate. What an individual artist or songwriter receives depends on who owns the relevant rights and on their contracts.
What Spotify’s $10 billion figure means
Spotify’s March 2025 Loud & Clear report says the company paid more than $10 billion to the music industry in 2024. The figure is Spotify’s reported aggregate royalty total. The available sources do not establish that an independent auditor verified it.
The recipient scope matters: royalties are paid to rights holders and other entities in the payment chain. The total does not show how much any one artist, songwriter, label, publisher, or distributor received or kept. Spotify’s published materials do not provide a complete audited allocation of the 2024 total among those groups.
How music royalties reach artists and songwriters
Streaming involves at least two distinct rights: the rights in a particular recording and the rights in the underlying composition. They can belong to different people or companies, so payments follow different routes.
#1 Best Overall
Recording royalties
Recording royalties relate to the sound recording. Spotify says it pays the rightsholder that delivered the recording, typically a record label or distributor. An artist’s share then depends on the terms of their agreement with that company.
Publishing royalties
Publishing royalties relate to the composition—the music and lyrics—and are owed to songwriters or composition owners. Payments can pass through publishers, performing-rights organizations, collecting societies, or other relevant channels. A performer who did not write a song may not receive its songwriting royalties; a songwriter may receive publishing royalties even if someone else performed the recording.
Spotify’s royalty explanation describes these rights and payment paths. The company’s broader total should not be read as a personal earnings figure for any one participant.
Why there is no single Spotify rate per stream
Spotify says it does not pay artists according to a fixed per-play or per-stream rate. Its support guidance explains that royalty payments vary with how music is streamed and with the agreements artists have with labels or distributors. The amount that ultimately reaches an artist also depends on the rights and contractual arrangements involved.

For that reason, dividing Spotify’s $10 billion industry-wide total by a stream count would not produce a reliable artist rate. It would combine an aggregate payment figure with a different metric while ignoring who holds the rights and how revenue is allocated. Spotify’s figure answers how much the company says it paid across the industry, not what a particular stream earned for a particular artist.
Other Spotify payout figures for 2024
Spotify for Artists’ Royalties Guide reports two additional figures for 2024:
Rank #4
- More than 71,000 artists generated at least $10,000 from Spotify alone.
- Independent artists and labels collectively generated more than $5 billion from Spotify.
These are Spotify-reported thresholds and category totals. They do not establish what every artist received, how much an individual kept after contractual splits, or what artists earned from other services and sources.

Spotify’s Loud & Clear payouts resource reports nearly $4.5 billion paid to publishing rightsholders over the last two years. That is a multi-year figure, not a stated 2024-only amount, so it should not be added to or presented as a breakdown of the 2024 $10 billion total.

What the headline can—and cannot—tell you
- It can tell you: Spotify reports paying more than $10 billion in music royalties to the industry in 2024.
- It cannot tell you: how much went directly to artists, how much a specific artist earned, what share any party retained, or a universal payment per stream.
Those individual figures require information about rights ownership, payment routes, and contractual terms that the aggregate headline does not provide.
