Spotify Free vs. Premium: Features, Limits, and Which Plan Fits Your Listening

Spotify Free is ad-supported and does not include music downloads. Premium adds ad-free listening, offline music, more playback control, and higher audio options; the right plan depends on your listening habits, household, and local price.

Spotify Free costs nothing but includes ads and offers less direct playback control; Premium adds ad-free music, music downloads for offline listening, and higher audio-quality options. Whether Premium is worth paying for depends on which limits affect you, how many people need accounts, and the price in your country. The prices below are Spotify’s listed U.S. monthly rates accessed October 4, 2026; check Spotify’s current checkout page for local prices and terms.

Spotify Free vs. Premium at a glance

Feature Spotify Free Spotify Premium
Music ads Ad-supported music listening. Spotify lists ad-free music listening as a Premium benefit.
Offline listening Podcast downloads are available; music downloads are not. Download music and podcasts for offline listening, subject to device limits and periodic reconnection.
Playback control On mobile, Spotify says Smart Shuffle is always active; behavior can vary by device and listening surface. Spotify says Premium lets you play songs in any order and skip without limits.
Audio quality Spotify’s settings table does not list the “Very High” music setting for Free on desktop, mobile, or tablet. “Very High” is approximately 320 kbit/s. Spotify separately offers lossless FLAC up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz across most of its catalog, subject to app, device, connection, and settings.
Audiobooks A monthly included Premium audiobook allowance does not apply to Free. Spotify’s U.S. page lists 15 hours per month for Individual subscribers and for Duo and Family plan managers, subject to terms and catalog eligibility.

Spotify’s descriptions of these features are on its Premium benefits page, its offline downloads page, and its audio quality support page.

What Free includes—and where its limits matter

Ads and playback control

Free is Spotify’s ad-supported music service. On mobile, Spotify says Smart Shuffle is always active, but the exact playback experience may depend on your device and the surface you use. Spotify’s getting-started guidance describes Premium as allowing users to play selected songs in any order; its Premium benefits page also lists unlimited skips and control over what plays next. These differences matter most if you routinely want to choose a specific track or shape a queue rather than accept a more constrained mobile experience.

Podcasts are not the same as music downloads

Spotify says Free users can download podcasts, but downloading music for offline listening is a Premium feature. If you need music for a flight, commute, or spotty connection, streaming a playlist ahead of time is not a substitute for an offline music download.

What Premium adds, including download limits

Offline music inside Spotify

Premium subscribers can download music and podcasts and play them offline in Spotify. Spotify states a limit of up to 10,000 downloaded tracks on each of up to five devices. To keep downloads active, the app must connect to the internet at least once every 30 days. These are offline-playback downloads within Spotify, not permanent audio files you can export and keep independently of the service. See Spotify’s download and offline listening details.

Higher settings and lossless are different things

Spotify lists Premium’s “Very High” setting at approximately 320 kbit/s in its audio quality support information. It separately describes lossless FLAC streaming up to 24-bit/44.1 kHz across most of its catalog. Lossless is not simply another name for the 320 kbit/s setting. Whether either option is relevant to you depends on the track, playback app and device, network, settings, and audio equipment; a higher specification alone does not guarantee an audible improvement.

Audiobook hours depend on the plan and terms

Spotify’s U.S. Premium page lists 15 audiobook listening hours per month for Individual subscribers and for Duo and Family plan managers. Eligibility, titles, and other terms may apply, so check the live plan details if audiobook access is part of your decision.

Spotify Premium prices in the U.S.

The following are the monthly prices listed on Spotify’s U.S. Premium page as accessed October 4, 2026. They are U.S. examples, not worldwide prices; Spotify can change prices and plan terms.

Plan Listed U.S. monthly price Accounts and eligibility
Individual $12.99/month One Premium account.
Student $6.99/month One account for an eligible, verified student, subject to Spotify’s terms.
Duo $18.99/month Two Premium accounts; members must live at the same address.
Family $21.99/month Up to six Premium accounts; members must live at the same address. Spotify lists parental controls and audiobook hours for the plan manager.

For two people at the same address, compare Duo’s total price with paying for two Individual plans. For a household considering Family, weigh the total monthly bill against the number of people who will actually use an account and the same-address requirement. Students should confirm their eligibility and verification status. Spotify’s U.S. Premium page has current plan details; a trial shown on the page at the time it was captured ended September 23, 2026, so that offer should not be treated as currently available.

Which plan fits your listening?

Stay with Free if the savings matter more

  • You are comfortable with ads and the playback experience available on your devices.
  • You do not need to download music for offline listening.
  • A recurring subscription would be less valuable to you than avoiding a monthly bill.

Choose Individual if you want the main Premium benefits for yourself

  • You listen often enough that ad-free music or more control over what plays next would make a meaningful difference.
  • You want music downloads for travel, commuting, or unreliable internet.
  • You want Premium’s audio settings and have a playback setup and connection that can make them relevant.

Check Student, Duo, or Family against eligibility and actual use

  • Student: Consider it only if you meet Spotify’s student eligibility and verification rules.
  • Duo: Compare its total price with two Individual subscriptions if two eligible people at one address need separate accounts.
  • Family: Compare the total cost with the number of household members who will use it, and confirm that everyone meets the same-address rule.

Is Spotify Premium worth it?

Premium is easiest to justify when you regularly encounter Free’s limits: you want music without ads, need offline music, or want more direct control over playback. If those conveniences are occasional or unimportant and you are happy with an ad-supported service, Free may be the better fit. Audio quality can also factor into the choice, but only if the music, settings, connection, and playback equipment support the higher option you want. For a household, the value calculation should use the plan’s total cost, eligible listener count, and account rules—not just the per-person arithmetic.
