Neither route is automatically better, more secure or better paid. Choose by comparing the actual role, pay, hours, training, contract terms and what you want next.
What is the difference between a fixed-term job and an apprenticeship?
A fixed-term employee has an employment contract that ends on a particular date or when a specified task is completed. A contract of apprenticeship is expressly excluded from the government’s definition of fixed-term employment, even though an apprenticeship agreement records planned start and end dates. The label in an advert alone does not tell you all the terms: read the employment contract and, for an apprenticeship, the apprenticeship agreement too. GOV.UK’s fixed-term contract definition and apprenticeship agreement guidance explain the distinction.
In England, an apprenticeship is a real job combining work and study to build skills and knowledge for a specific occupation. It includes approved training and an assessment of occupational competence, and official guidance says it lasts at least eight months. Apprenticeships range from level 2 to level 7. The programme requirements described here are for England; Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland have different apprenticeship arrangements. The official apprenticeship service describes the programme.
Compare the offers that matter
| What to compare | Fixed-term job | Apprenticeship |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose | Perform a role for a defined period or task. It may provide useful experience, but formal training is not inherent in the contract type. | Do a job while following an agreed training plan for an occupation, with assessment. |
| Pay | Check the offered rate, hours, overtime, holiday and other terms. Equal-treatment rules apply against comparable permanent employees, subject to objective justification. | Check the actual wage and the apprentice’s age and year of apprenticeship. Required training time is paid; the applicable minimum rate can change with age and first-year status. |
| Time and schedule | The contract may end on its stated date or when the specified task is complete. | Training takes place during working hours. It may be scheduled weekly, monthly or in blocks; ask the employer and provider for the timetable. |
| Outcome | The employment contract itself does not promise a qualification. | Successful completion includes assessment and a recognised qualification under the described England route. It does not guarantee a job afterwards. |
| Ending or continuing | It normally ends automatically on the agreed date. Non-renewal counts as dismissal; related rights depend on service and circumstances. | The agreement records start and end dates. Apprentices are employees, and redundancy or early termination can involve specific considerations. |
What is the minimum pay for a young worker or apprentice?
The following UK statutory minimum hourly rates took effect on 1 April 2026. They are minimums, not a prediction of the pay in any particular offer. The apprentice rate generally applies to apprentices under 19, or those aged 19 or over in the first year of their apprenticeship. Once an apprentice is 19 or over and past the first year, the age-related National Minimum Wage or National Living Wage applies. Check the worker’s eligibility and pay reference period against current official guidance.

| Category | Minimum hourly rate from 1 April 2026 |
|---|---|
| National Living Wage, age 21 and over | £12.71 |
| National Minimum Wage, age 18 to 20 | £10.85 |
| National Minimum Wage, under 18 | £8.00 |
| Apprentice rate, where eligible | £8.00 |
The rates are set out in the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Regulations 2026; GOV.UK’s minimum wage guidance explains which rate applies. Minimum wage law applies across the UK; apprenticeship programme guidance above is specific to England.
Apprentices must be paid for normal working hours and required training or study time. Official apprentice guidance says at least 20% of normal working hours must be spent on training. Confirm how that requirement is scheduled in the particular programme with the employer and training provider. Apprentice pay and conditions guidance sets out the rule.

What rights and end-of-contract rules should you check?
Fixed-term employment
Fixed-term employees must not be treated less favourably than comparable permanent employees without objective justification. Protections include equal pay and conditions, equivalent benefits, information about permanent vacancies, and protection against redundancy or dismissal. After four or more years on successive fixed-term contracts, an employee generally becomes permanent unless the employer can show a good business reason or a relevant collective agreement applies. GOV.UK’s fixed-term employee rights guidance gives the details.
A fixed-term contract normally ends automatically on its agreed end date, but non-renewal counts as dismissal. Rights to a fair reason, written statement, redundancy pay and minimum notice depend on service and circumstances. If an employer wants to end the contract early, check what the contract says. The relevant rules and service thresholds are described in GOV.UK’s guidance on renewing or ending a fixed-term contract.

Apprenticeship employment
An apprentice is an employee with standard employment rights. The employer must provide an employment contract, sign an apprenticeship agreement and agree a training plan with the apprentice and provider. The agreement records the occupation, apprenticeship, dates and amount of training. Employer guidance on apprenticeship agreements describes these documents. Government guidance advises employers to obtain legal advice before ending an apprenticeship early for reasons other than redundancy.
Which route is more likely to suit you?
An apprenticeship may fit if you want a structured route into an occupation
- You have a clear interest in a job area with an approved programme available.
- You want to learn at work with a training plan and assessment, rather than simply take a role.
- You can manage the programme’s work and training schedule.
- You have checked the pay against your age, apprenticeship year and expected hours.
A fixed-term job may fit if the particular role and its terms are the priority
- The role matches your immediate interests, needs or circumstances.
- You want a defined period of work or experience without a formal apprenticeship training commitment.
- The offer’s pay, hours, location or flexibility matters more to you than a qualification pathway.
- You understand the end date and have asked whether an extension or permanent vacancy could be possible.
There is no established head-to-head statistic here showing that one route produces better employment outcomes for young job seekers. Results depend on the occupation, employer, training quality, completion and local opportunities.

Checklist before accepting either offer
Compare the written terms, not just the advert or job title:
- Hourly rate, expected take-home pay, hours and overtime.
- Paid training time, if it is an apprenticeship, and the full work-and-study timetable.
- Holiday, sick-pay and other employment terms.
- Travel, equipment or other costs you may need to cover.
- Who will supervise you and, for an apprenticeship, how training and assessment are delivered.
- Any qualification you can expect to earn and the conditions for completion.
- Contract end date, early termination terms and what happens at the end.
- Whether an extension, another role or permanent vacancy is a realistic next step.
For an apprenticeship, read both the employment contract and apprenticeship agreement. Ask the training provider to explain the timetable and assessment before you commit.
