They give investors a way to buy and sell Ether-linked fund shares through a securities account, without personally buying or safeguarding Ether. The funds do not make Ether less volatile, guarantee a gain, or ensure that investor money will keep flowing in. Going forward, compare each product’s costs, tracking, liquidity, custody and staking policy—not just its ticker or the headlines about flows.
What began trading—and what investors actually own
The July 23, 2024 launch followed separate steps: listing approvals and effective registration statements. Grayscale’s products and Fidelity’s FETH began trading that day. The funds are commonly called spot Ethereum ETFs, though the launch products are exchange-traded trust products.
When an investor buys shares, the investor owns fund shares, not the Ether held by the trust. The trust holds Ether through custodial arrangements and seeks to reflect Ether’s price, less expenses and liabilities. Shares trade through a brokerage account; creation and redemption of large baskets involve authorized participants and other market participants. The retail shareholder does not directly control the trust’s Ether. See the Grayscale filings and iShares annual report for product-specific structure and disclosures.
At launch, Grayscale described the wrapper as access to Ethereum “without the need to buy, store, or manage Ethereum directly.” That is the issuer’s promotional description, not an independent assessment of investment suitability. The wrapper can simplify access, but it adds fund-level costs and operational arrangements rather than removing investment risk.

What to compare before choosing a fund
Products can differ, and their terms can change. Review current fund documents rather than assuming a feature from one issuer applies across the category.
- Ticker and exchange: Confirm the exact fund and where its shares trade.
- Fees and waivers: Check the current sponsor fee, waiver amount, eligibility and expiration. Bitwise’s ETHW launch announcement, for example, offered a 0.20% management fee waived for six months on the first $500 million in assets. That was a launch offer, not a statement of today’s terms; consult the announcement and current fund materials.
- Tracking and expenses: Read the objective and how expenses, liabilities and any operational events affect the relationship between share value and Ether.
- Trading liquidity and price: Look at bid-ask spreads and whether shares trade at a premium or discount to net asset value (NAV). Asset totals or trading volume should always be tied to a date.
- Custody and operations: Review who holds the Ether and the fund’s procedures for custody, creation and redemption, as well as the risks disclosed in its filings.
- Staking policy: Verify whether the specific fund stakes Ether, how rewards and fees are handled, and whether the policy has changed.
Staking is now a fund-specific distinction
Do not assume that every U.S. spot Ether fund stakes its holdings. Grayscale reported that ETHE began staking on October 6, 2025, and that its Mini Trust’s name changed to Grayscale Ethereum Staking Mini ETF on January 5, 2026. Those are Grayscale-specific developments, not a category-wide policy. The Grayscale Q1 2026 report and 2025 annual report describe those changes.

Staking can add provider and validator arrangements, fees and operational considerations to the fund’s ordinary Ether exposure. The fund’s current prospectus and reports are the place to check how a particular product handles staking and any rewards; do not infer the terms for one fund from another.
How to read fund size and flow headlines
Fund assets and flows describe activity over a stated period; they are not price forecasts. For scale, Grayscale reported ETHE assets under management of $9.19 billion as of July 23, 2024, and ETH assets of $1.02 billion as of July 22, 2024. The launch-period figures followed a distribution of Ether to seed ETH, and should not be treated as present-day assets. These issuer figures appear in Grayscale’s launch announcement.

Similarly, BlackRock’s iShares Ethereum Trust ETF reported net assets of $10,300,756,520 on December 31, 2025, in its SEC-filed annual report. That is a dated balance-sheet figure, not an October 2026 AUM figure or evidence that Ether will appreciate. Grayscale reported its Ethereum Trust held approximately 0.8% of Ether in circulation on December 31, 2025; that fund-specific, dated holding does not by itself establish market influence or future demand. See its Q1 2026 report.
For ongoing monitoring, use issuer reports or other dated data to distinguish net creations and redemptions from price-driven changes in assets. There is no reliable up-to-the-minute aggregate flow total established here, so a single headline number should not be treated as a settled measure of current demand.

Risks that remain inside the ETF wrapper
- Ether price risk: Ether can be highly volatile, and a fund tracking it can lose value when Ether falls.
- Fees and tracking differences: Expenses reduce exposure over time, and waivers may expire or change. The shares may not match Ether’s price movement exactly.
- Premiums and discounts: Shares can trade above or below the value of the underlying Ether. In its 2025 filing, Grayscale reported that its Mini Trust had a maximum premium of 1.6% and an average premium of 0.1%, and a maximum discount of 0.7% and an average discount of 0.1%, for July 23, 2024 through December 31, 2025. Those figures apply only to that trust and period.
- Market-hour mismatch: Exchange-traded shares and global Ether markets do not trade on identical schedules. Grayscale warns that halted creations or redemptions, Ether volatility and disruption at digital-asset trading platforms can also contribute to divergence between share value and trust Ether value. See its filing.
- Fund-level operational risk: Using a fund avoids personally managing the trust’s Ether, but leaves custody, platform, creation/redemption and other fund arrangements relevant to investors.
What to expect going forward
The durable change is an exchange-traded route to Ether exposure for investors who prefer securities-market access over holding tokens directly. Whether a fund fits depends on the investor’s goals and the product’s terms. Watch for changes in fees and waivers, dated asset and flow reports, spreads and premiums or discounts, tracking, custody disclosures, and fund-specific staking policies. These are useful measures of product operation and demand; none reliably predicts Ether’s next move.
At launch, Grayscale’s Global Head of ETFs David LaValle called the products “reliable and convenient access” to Ethereum in a familiar ETP wrapper. That was an issuer executive’s characterization, not a guarantee of reliability, convenience for every investor or future performance.
