Sports Card Grading Explained: What Grades Mean and When to Pay for Grading

A card grade describes condition under one company’s standards—not its value. Learn how to weigh likely grade outcomes, sold prices, fees, shipping, and personal collecting goals before submitting.

Sports card grading combines three separate services: checking whether a card is genuine and unaltered, judging its condition against a grading company’s standards, and sealing it in a protective holder with a label. The grade describes condition—not market value—and no grade guarantees a sale price or profit. Whether it is worth paying for grading depends on the likely grade, recent sold prices for the exact card, your full costs, and whether you value authentication or display apart from resale.

What sports card grading does—and does not—tell you

Grading is not simply assigning a number. A company first considers authenticity and possible alteration, then assesses condition, and finally encapsulates qualifying cards with a label that records the result.

PSA says cards are checked for genuineness and doctoring before condition grading; only cards that pass authentication proceed to receive a grade and certification number on the holder’s label. A number therefore does not, by itself, describe every authenticity or alteration issue. PSA lists no-grade outcomes for issues including trimming, restoration, recoloring, questionable authenticity, altered stock, cleaning, minimum size, and miscuts. Some no-grade outcomes may still incur fees. CGC separately uses designations such as Authentic and Authentic Altered. Read the specific company’s label and policies rather than treating every slab as equivalent. (PSA grading services; PSA grading FAQ; CGC Cards grading scale)

A grade is a condition opinion under that grader’s scale, not an appraisal. It does not guarantee a buyer, a particular selling price, or a profit. Companies publish standards, but a card near a boundary may involve judgment: PSA says eye appeal and market acceptability can affect a call in borderline cases.

What grades mean

Common factors include centering, corners, edges, surface, print quality, and signs of alteration. The same numeral should be read with its grading company and label era: standards, terminology, and designations are not interchangeable.

PSA scale

PSA describes a PSA Gem Mint 10 as “a virtually perfect card.” Its published guidelines call for four sharp corners, sharp focus, and full original gloss. PSA allows that a slight printing imperfection may be acceptable if it does not impair overall appeal; its approximate centering tolerances for a 10 are 55/45 on the front and 75/25 on the reverse. These are PSA’s guidelines, not a checklist that guarantees a 10. (PSA, Grading Standards, accessed October 4, 2026.)

CGC Cards scale

CGC’s scale includes Pristine 10, Gem Mint 10, Mint+ 9.5, Mint 9, and lower grades as condition defects become more permissible. For sports and non-sports cards, CGC describes Mint 9 centering as 60/40 or better on the front and 90/10 or better on the back; its Gem Mint 10 description gives approximate tolerances of 55/45 front and 75/25 reverse. CGC says its Pristine 10 label is reserved for cards “flawless under 10-times magnification.” These are CGC’s descriptions, not resale guarantees. Check the label era when comparing slabs: legacy CGC/CSG 9.5 Gem Mint grades map to the updated CGC Cards Gem Mint 10 label. (CGC Cards grading scale, accessed October 4, 2026.)

When is it worth getting a card graded?

There is no reliable universal dollar threshold or market-wide grading premium established by the official grading sources cited here. Make the decision card by card, using plausible outcomes rather than assuming the best possible grade.

  1. Identify the exact card. Confirm the player, year, set, card number, parallel or variation, and any other features that distinguish it from similar cards.
  2. Inspect without manipulating it. Under good light, look at centering, corners, edges, surface, print quality, and visible signs of alteration. Do not clean, press, recolor, trim, or otherwise alter the card to try to improve its grade.
  3. Estimate a range of grade outcomes. Consider a lower-than-hoped outcome as well as a strong one. A pre-screen is only an estimate; neither a centering tool nor a loupe is established here as a reliable predictor of a professional grade.
  4. Compare recent completed sales. Look for the exact card and, where possible, sales for more than one grade from the company you are considering. Distinguish completed sales from asking prices, and compare with the likely raw-card sale.
  5. Calculate net proceeds in each scenario. Include the grading fee, shipping to and from the grader, insurance where applicable, any membership or intermediary charge, selling fees, and the time the card will be unavailable. Check the company’s current declared-value rules and tier terms: a value cap is a submission boundary, not a valuation guarantee.
  6. Decide based on your goal. If the likely net amount after grading and selling costs does not beat a reasonable raw-card sale, grading may still make sense to you for authentication, encapsulation, registry participation, or display—but those are personal benefits, not guaranteed financial returns.

PSA, CGC, and Beckett: U.S. service snapshot

Fees, submission availability, declared-value limits, and turnaround estimates change. The figures below are U.S. page snapshots accessed October 4, 2026, not durable prices or guarantees. PSA and CGC say their estimated turnaround times are not guaranteed; CGC’s direct-submission fees apply to Collector members, and membership discounts or declared-value policies may affect final cost. Shipping and other costs are not included in the per-card fees.

PSA says its turnaround estimates can change with volume and capacity. CGC likewise says turnaround is an estimate rather than a guarantee. Beckett’s temporary form and paused tiers were a status snapshot, with availability subject to demand and backlog. Do not choose a grader based on a blanket claim that one company always produces the highest resale value. The official standards and fee pages cited here do not establish a universal market ranking. For resale, compare completed sales for the same card, grader, and grade where possible; for personal collecting, weigh the grading company’s standards and label against your own preferences.

How to package cards for submission

Follow the destination company’s latest packing instructions; requirements can differ. CGC directs submitters to protect each card in an individual protective sleeve and a semi-rigid sleeve, then pack the cards between larger pieces of cardboard. Secure them without overtightening, add packing material, and use a sturdy cardboard box. CGC warns that overtight packing can cause damage and says the sender is responsible for safely shipping cards to it. Packaging is for safe handling and delivery; it does not raise the grade.
