Sporting CP completed Viktor Gyökeres’ transfer from Coventry City on 13 July 2023. Sporting disclosed a fee of €20 million fixed, plus up to €4 million in conditional bonuses—not an exact £20.5 million payment. The club later sold him permanently to Arsenal in July 2025.
How much did Sporting CP pay for Gyökeres?
Sporting CP’s official 2023 disclosure set the fixed transfer consideration at €20 million, with up to €4 million more payable in conditional bonuses. The club also separately reported €2 million in intermediary fees, which should not be folded into the transfer fee without making that distinction. Sporting’s announcement described Gyökeres’ signing on 13 July 2023; its market communication gave the financial terms.
The £20.5 million figure in the original headline is best treated as a reported sterling estimate, not the exact amount Sporting officially disclosed. BBC Sport described Coventry’s fee as close to £20 million, and SportingLife also reported it as around £20 million; neither establishes an official fixed payment of precisely £20.5 million. BBC Sport and SportingLife provide those reported estimates.
What were the other terms of the Coventry deal?
Coventry was initially entitled to 15% of a future profit from Gyökeres’ resale, with a mechanism that could reduce the share to 10%. In July 2024, Sporting reported that it had reduced Coventry’s share to 10% after €2 million in objectives had been achieved and Sporting made a €1 million option payment. These amounts relate to the sell-on arrangement and are not part of the original fixed fee. Sporting’s 2023 disclosure and its 2024 disclosure set out the terms.
